How does Garrett have Voyager on Netflix? I can only get it on Paramount+ aka the worst app ever.

Ja Dav

Deanna, half-Betazoid, has to ask which of a hologram and a flesh and blood person is Zimmerman. Also, it's strange that after the existential horror of the Dominion War, during which the Maquis were literally exterminated, Starfleet is still worked up about the handful of Maquis on Voyager.

Andrew Murray

Hmmm weird. remember how Deanna could SENSE emotion from Data once the chip was implanted (in Generations). Not quite the same thing here. But to answer her question : "We both are!". that settles the argument.

Andrew Murray

Why is Garrett reading a completely different synopsis than what is included in the above preamble text? "Life Line: The Doctor gets himself transmitted back to Federation space to treat his mortally ailing creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman. A clash of egos ensues." Paramount+ synopsis reads: "The Doctor seizes the opportunity to save the life of the man who created him" which is closer to the above and is what the episode is ultimately about. The Netflix (Australia) synopsis is exactly what Garrett quoted.

Andrew Murray

I'm sure by season 6 weren't the Mark I's considered "failures" and relegated to the spice mines of Kessel (or something...yes Star Wars reference used deliberately(!)). I'm sure it's the one where the Doc is writing a holo-novel about his treatment as a Hologram.....a controversial novel, but all the alpha-quadrant Mk I's get hold of it some how. (or is that still to come, based on this ep where he's told that "Mark I's" are obsolete etc. he already knows that since don't they have Mk II's at this point?

Andrew Murray

I think Barkley is holding a storage device capable of holding the Doctor's program. A glorified USB thumb-drive or external SSD.?

Andrew Murray

LucasFilm I believe is the "pioneer" of motion control since ILM had to build their own cameras and rigs (and the computer to control it all) to get the models and SFX footage needed for Star Wars (1977).

Andrew Murray

I'll say one thing if that reconfigured tricorder is Zimmermann's attempt at a sense of humor, then the EMH is sadly missing that personality trait I think.

Andrew Murray

I wonder if the "100 years ago" reference is deliberate because that would put you smack-bang in McCoy's sick bay on Enterprise NCC-1701. When Troi and the Doctor is discussing treatment by a doctor from "100 years ago" with reference to Troi saying would the Doctor be happy being treated by a doctor from a century ago, in the same way Zimmermann is against being treated by an obsolete EMH. Voyager is around 2371 onwards, TOS was set in around 2265 onwards, so about a century, give or take a few years.

Andrew Murray

Voyager's EMH has become what I suppose Doctor Zimmermann envisioned the Mk I's to be. Have a pleasant personality, outside interests, romantic interests, independence, maybe be a bit irritable, sometimes hard to get on with...you know...basically human!

Andrew Murray

funny B-Story would be Janeway briefing Paris "Mr Paris, if we can't get the Doctor back, you're it. You better start reading that medical journal..NOW!". (Paris protesting: "but I'm a pilot not a doctor!").

Andrew Murray

EMH as the resident lounge singer in Quark's along with Vic Fontaine.

Andrew Murray

If it was Bob Picardo's story, wouldn't that have had (or not had) the rest of the crew featured? I don't know how much story one would pitch to the producers/writers, but surely it would be a fairly lengthy outline. Not just a one liner synopsis "The EMH meets Zimmermann after being emailed to the Alpha Quadrant via the Pathfinder/Midas Array". That wouldn't sell it for me.

Estelle Keller

According to the site that keeps track of lines for Voyager, for main cast: on this episode Harry had 3 lines, Tom had 1 line, B’Elanna had 1 line too, and Tuvok had 0 lines but he was on screen though this site doesn’t keep track of appearances without dialogue http://www.chakoteya.net/Voyager/LineCountS4-S7.htm

Craig Drebit

Personally, I'm getting really irritated with all of the JC talk during the pod 😖 I assume most of it is tongue in cheek but it's ruining a lot of scenes, especially this one which was obviously written to showcase how this is, and always shall be "one crew". It's just an allegory to the bigger concept that two people (or crews), once on opposite sides, have learned to work together, and in this case, became great buddies. But then all of the JC people try to slam their narrative into every single scene, in such non-sequitor ways, that it's ridiculous and incredibly annoying. IMO sometimes it's destroying people's enjoyment of the show!!!

Dean Makin

Slightly baffled at the need for every character to have something to do in every episode. If these were 10 episode seasons, then maybe; but at 26 per year I'm fine if a character isn't featured in an episode. I guess that's the actor part of Garrett & Robbie coming through, but it's never bothered me as a fan.

Tashicat

Its all connected in my world So EMH mk 1 is doc Mk 2 is Andy Dick Would Bashir have been the Mk3 then? or does that rly not count because it was meant for long term? I assume they chose another model but would the next model still be considered a Mk 3 because it was never officially finished or because its a new human model does it automatically become the next in the line as Mk4? Yknow, if any of that made sense

Irene Artho

OMG, I LOVE Early Edition!! It's my favourite ever series :) Favourite Non-Star Trek anyway :D Didn't know Robby was in it!

Estelle Keller

I think for this episode and them not remembering anything that mentioning how there was barely a B plot is okay. I prefer episodes where we either have an overarching story and everyone is involved or ones with multiple plots. There have been other episodes where they wondered where other characters were like the EMH. If I don’t see someone for a bit, I wonder things like is something behind the scenes causing the lack of material for a good or bad reason, but that is just me.

Ja Dav

I agree.....we don;t have to go Poochie, where anyone not playing in Fair Haven should be seen talking about Fair Haven.

Kris Hansen

Did you notice that Dr. Zimmerman also has more hair, when seen from behind, than our Doctor? Explain that!

Samantha

This is one of my favorite episodes. Funny and heartwarming. It has interesting things to say too about creator/creation. Something 'defective' made in your image. But this rewatch it also struck me how Barclay and Zimmerman were so similar. Their personalities are entirely different, but they have a lot in common, surrounded by their holographic friends. Interesting that Barclay would end up as Zimmerman's sole inheritor.

Samantha

He met the MK II on an experimental prototype ship. Might not assume it's a fleet wide thing yet.

If I can offer perspective from a person who is objectively not a J/C shipper: It definitely comes across as more flirty than a platonic working relationship. I feel the people in charge whether that be the network or the producers made them play the angle up and there were probably a combination of writers who were for it and against it, which is why it's somewhat inconsistent. I really want them to just be friends but the damn show keeps winking at the audience. I think you ought to be more annoyed with the network/producers than people simply reacting to how the show is presented to them as they are watching this for the first time in 25 years. I am also watching it again for the first time in 25 years and to be fair, the first 2 seasons were totally different where Janeway was very close BFFs with Tuvok, there was more sexual tension between her and Tom, and B'Elanna was fantasizing about Chakotay every 5 minutes. The J/C stuff started around the latter half of S2n

Debra Crockett

Garrett, Harry played sax in 711, "Lineage".

ST Fan CB

Clearly the object Barkley holds is a data storage device that holds the Doctors program. Why else would he have to ask the computer if the download is complete? He clearly downloaded the Doctor's program from the data storage device into the lab's data storage. I am not sure that all your consternations about multiple scans are warranted. Perhaps like having to take multiple blood samples today, the Doctor needed several scans to get a complete picture. Additionally due to Zimmerman's recalcitrant attitude, I don't believe the Doctor ever got all the scans he needed from the beginning. In previous viewings, I had always assumed that there was some giggity going on between Zimmerman and his "assistant". Why are we back to publicity photos for end credit scene? Bring back the action figures.

Jessica Tomechak

What Garrett said around 1:30 about "giving back" really stood out for me. My teenager and I were lucky enough to meet Garrett on one of the Voy Doc away missions, and he took the time to give encouragement and advice on the acting business. Garrett, if you see this comment, you 100% fulfilled what you were talking about in this pod, taking the time to encourage someone who is just starting out. The explanation in this podcast about that being sourced from a teacher who did the same for you was incredibly moving for us, as it clearly was for you too. No disrespect intended to our wonderful co-host - Mr. Robert Duncan McNeill - we just didn't happen to meet :-) but the sentiment was clearly shared by both, and it applies for acting and life in general. This podcast has inspired me to find someone to encourage tomorrow! Maybe a new daily practice?

DogBlud

re: James Gunn he went back to his horror roots again with Slither. That's how I got to know his work as a director. I was floored when he was announced for Guardians.

David H Dykema

Doctor episodes always win for me. I think he really made the show. And that's all Robert

Shane

I don't mind this episode, but I think this is the start of the Doctor and Seven show that really describes the final season, rather than the Voyager story.

Dannielle Kaminski

I have never been bothered by an episode that didn't feature the entire cast. I would rather have an occasional episode dive into or spotlight a certain character rather than there be forced dialogue or contrived sub plots in order to cram everyone in. I look at my own workplace and how I don't see every coworker everyday and yet we still work for the same organization. Sometimes you just don't run into a particular person at work.

Jen V

I loved the funny ending 🤣 😂 LOL!!!

SnazzyO

Good story, well constructed. But yet ANOTHER Doctor Story. I love Bob Picardo, but I did not love the Seven/Doctor domination of Season 6 plot lines. It took the shine off the episode, which is unfortunate. Because it IS a good episode. Nit: if someone was seriously injured, did they really expect Tom to take care of it??? He’s learned a lot but a massive outbreak or major battle and many die.

Stefan Au

oooohhhh somebody didn't do good research xD both Shatner and Nimoy had writing or story credits on several of the first 6 Star Trek movies... Spiner had a story credit on Nemesis... Majel Barret had a story credit for "The Muse"... and Simon Pegg co-wrote "Star Trek: Beyond"

MG

Tom did have one line, and it JUST happened to be "Yes, Ma'am!"

Adele Lara

Your performances after the credits are my favorite. I missed them when you stopped doing them. They always made me smile and sometimes laugh out loud. 😹
