I'm not sure why Robbie was so convinced this "borrowed" from The Matrix movies - the Matrix movies didn't invent the idea of a "virtual world"!

Ja Dav

Rick Berman was probably overseeing the development of (Star Trek:)Enterprise by this point.

Craig Drebit

He's getting caught up on the use of the word "matrix" and likely forgetting that the Borg also use the same terminology to describe parts of their ships 😆

Andrew Murray

Maybe I'm misreading the point of their understanding but Tom was originally just "the guide" for the purpose of tracking the Marquis in the Badlands. When the ship was stranded in the Delta quadrant, he was given a field commission of Lieutenant Junior Grade and became Conn officer (and sick bay nurse/medic-in-training). There is actually a blooper in that at first Tom / Robbie is seen wearing the pips of a full lieutenant but that error is subsequently corrected so that he's eventually wearing the correct insignia for a Lieutenant Junior Grade, one gold and one black pip. In the S5 episode "Thirty Days" he was subsequently demoted to Ensign and sentenced to solitary in the Brig for 30 days (hence the episode name). We get told this story in flashbacks through Tom's point of view as he's dictating a letter addressed to his father. With reference to his (apparent) promotion : "Lieutenant Paris was demoted to ensign in the season 5 episode "Thirty Days," only to regain his lieutenant rank in the season 6 finale "Unimatrix Zero." Paris' rank wasn't reinstated for any particular heroic act, rather as an acknowledgment of his service on the ship since his demotion." (reference: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Unimatrix_Zero_(episode)) I don't see the reinstatement of his previous rank as a "promotion".

Andrew Murray

We might have SEEN a kiss on the cheek from Torres but the rest of the night is **CENSORED** and too much for family TV viewing.....

Andrew Murray

Isn't Captain and XO holding hands directive "Janeway PI Alpha-Echo.NCC-74656.NCC1701-Delta." ha ha.

Andrew Murray

If Seven is disconnected from the Collective, how is she interfacing with Unimatrix Zero at all, if it's a place borg go while in their regeneration cycles? (Yes, she regenerates, but no, she's not connected to the Collective as part of her "day job". Or is it the one with this "recessive gene" the Queen spoke of.

Andrew Murray

This should be "Best of Both Worlds: Deja vu". If Janeway became Queen then was somehow disconnected and became an individual again, then in "Picard", the Borg's apparent desire to join the Federation would make more sense. Seven encounters Ex-borg Janeway and aids Janeway's rehabilitation of sorts, to restore her humanity with a few "now you know how I feel" hints.

Andrew Murray

The difference between all the other borg in Unimatrix Zero with the recessive gene, and Seven is they forget their "dream" but Seven remembers. They must realise that which is why they want her help.

Andrew Murray

When the Doctor asks Tuvok has he done this bridging of minds before, Tuvok says he's observed the process, reminds me of Ripley (Aliens) asking the marines if they've the number of 'drops' (from mother ship to planet surface) for them and one answers "Twenty, simulated. Ripley says how many ACTUAL drops to which the response is "well two, including this one"

Andrew Murray

It's curious how you have all these alpha quadrant or Gamma quadrant species that might otherwise be at war with each other in other circumstances, are a rag-tag bunch of rebels allying with each other against the Empire...I mean the Borg. But I have to say it: Star Trek Voyager: Attack of the Drones.

Andrew Murray

Belanna is a full lieutenant, and Paris is only a "junior" lieutenant - she outranks him.

Nancy Lapierre

Tom didn't get a promotion he got his rank back from loosing it in 30 days. He was made leutenant at the end of caretaker.

sab ewell

I always saw his promotion as time served reinstatement type thing.

sab ewell

Also as a p/t shipper I always want more kissing but it's the bridge with the Captain right there he just got his pip back lol

Estelle Keller

Garrett watching Downton Abbey hurrah. And well you can’t say good afternoon anymore after seeing Spirited. That movie musical “ruined” that phrase. And I think Tom was promoted as he didn’t act up for a long time and didn’t steal a shuttle to get Harry and B’Elanna back in Muse or attack her ex boyfriend either. Plus Janeway may have really liked Queen Arachnia and her Fair Haven boyfriend was partly Tom’s creation. honestly I think it was because of the end of the episode as with Janeway and Tuvok gone along with Torres, he ends up being first officer and an ensign being first officer is crazy. Plus Lieutenant Paris just sounds better than Ensign Paris, and if they are still talking to Starfleet it would be good news for the admiral.

Samantha

I love how you guys forgot Dark Frontier. You're just gonna have to watch the show all over again. ;)

MARTIN REVITT

I Read a interview with brannon braga, this episode was inspired from the first Matrix movie.

Tashicat

Considering at one pt Janeway snapped off on them both and gave them ORDERS to use better judgement, theyre probably the MOST reserved in affection when she's around

bakura

My understanding about the "I didn't see a box on my chair" comment (I could be wrong) was you were annoying the writer's so much Garrett about wanting Harry to get a promotion that they wrote that in there just to annoy you.

Phil Bishop

the date with the Borg Queen bit at the end of the podcast , Harry should have said " Tom , let's just say that she had an out of body experience " :D Thanks for the laughs guys !

Samantha

at this point it's such a running joke it'd be a shame to end it.

Meagan Wright

I think that the creepy comment from the Borg Queen to Harry was in response to some dialogue that was cut before Janeway comes to the bridge.

DebbieD

I agree Estelle, I thought Tom behaved and was reinstated to his former rank. I never thought his demotion was permanent. I also noticed how excited Chakotay was at his promotion. I always thought they worked well together, and I would have liked to see them as friends.

Janet Potts

Also, the promotion of junior officers is done more for time in service than specific accomplishments (Harry's non-promotion notwithstanding). This is why Harry NOT being promoted is the outlier and out of keeping with tradition. As a reference to current US practice, you have to screw up pretty badly NOT to be promoted, especially from Ensign to LTJG. In the modern Navy, a command has to send paperwork in to prevent the promotion of an Ensign. Promotion from LTJG to LT is almost as automatic though you can get "frocked", i.e. given the rank and duties of a LT without the pay (the pay increase comes at the 4 year mark even if the person is frocked at 3 1/2 years). I see Tom's reinstatement of his previous rank as him having done his penance and proven himself with consistent exemplary duty.

Kassandra

I totally agree with Robbie and Garrett, it did hurt so much, to see the Delta Flyer destroyed. I also was wondering, why they didn't take another shuttle, since it was clearly Janeways Plan that the aproaching ship will be destroyed and the away team beams onto the Cube in the very last second.

ST Fan CB

RDM, your consternation over Paris getting his rank back is misplaced. In the military, promotions are not given out for single acts of service or heroics, they are given out for time in service and as Janeway stated, overall performance. Awards (medals) are the thing given out for single acts or heroics. Although people can be promoted with a battlefield promotion, those are few and far between and half of the time are temporary. Also a point of correction: Paris is not getting promoted, his rank is being reinstated which is different. Obviously, when Janeway demoted him, his rank was temporarily suspended and now reinstated for performance. This happens every day in the military although in the junior enlisted ranks and not in the NCO or Officer corps. When a soldier is being punished, the soldier can be demoted by one or two grades and then when enough time has passed with good performance, reinstated. Additionally, although he was "just a civilian observer" at the time of the Caretaker incident, he previously served in Starfleet and was probably a LT JG at the time he was kicked out. So all Janeway did after Caretaker was reinstate his previous rank which he then temporarily lost and then got back. This however brings up another issue, Chakotay was a Commander in Starfleet but Janeway didn't reinstate him to Starfleet and Commander rank the way she did with Paris probably because of his length of time with the Maquis. Added Commentary: Seven must still be able to connect to the VR world with some of her Borg implants that she still has but were dormant until her former VR BF slid into her DMs. He realized that she could still connect to the VR world and then remember after regenerating because she was not part of the hive mind and thus be able to help them with their plans. Makes perfect sense in the Star Trek world.

Christinaof9

I always thought Unimatrix Zero 1 and 2 could have been a full length movie in theaters, it is so huge and epic! Absolute 10 in my book, forever and always. ❤ But I agree that the idea this would have been Seven's dad creating it and finding her would have been even better. The romance was a bit forced but it showed us Seven did have feelings and opened up her heart a bit to feeling them more and with who Anika was. If this wasn't the 90's/early 2000's it would have made perfect sense to begin exploring her romantic feelings in general at this point, figuring out she had feelings for women and understanding her queerness...I imagine that reflection is what happened after Voyager got home and I'm with Garrett, we needed a movie to explore all these things so badly (including his love affair with the Queen! 😂).

Bill

The end credits scene! I kinda regret my question now, but at the same time, I'm happy for Harry... 😜🤣

Christopher Collins

I loved that post Credits scene with Harry and the Borg Queen.

Christopher Collins

I remember going to see Robert Duncan McNeil at a Star Trek Convention in Kansas City and he revealed the spoiler that in the last episode he filmed before it aired that he was getting a promotion and the whole audience at the panel gave a big cheer!

Michael Paddock

I know I’m late to the game, but I always assumed the “We’ll see you soon Harry” line was The Queen saying he was going to be assimilated.

Zalyn Schwartz

"We've had so many people die on this show..." Hilarious and 100% accurate! There should have been quarters for Seven!

T

I always thought it was the borg queen trying to rattle Janeway by threatening her 'baby'. Janeway's the most protective of Harry from day 1

millymilsner

Robbie was particularly goofy this episode and I love it. Especially when Garrett was trying not to laugh. This is why I have the video version and not just audio. I have no issue with them using a forest as their virtual haven. I think it makes sense. They all come from different places and their cities would have looked different. A forest is an environment that they are probably all familiar with.

SnazzyO

‘Ditto’ to all those comments that said Paris’ reinstatement to LTJG was a due to good behavior. That’s the ‘in universe’ answer. A BTS answer was probably 1) his demotion was unpopular with the fans, and 2) they needed him at a LTJG to play ‘First Officer’ in Pt 2. Episode thoughts: - I didn’t understand Seven’s anger and it felt artificial conflict to me - The Borg Queen was awesome - I was so glad Janeway not only said she would attempt the mission without Chakotay but acceded to Chakotay’s insistence she take B’Elana and Tuvok. - Good taunting Evil Borg Queen - Excellent cliffhanger

Dee McGee

Robbie, don't think of it as getting a premonition for no reason. Think of it as your previous rank that was taken from you for no good reason being reinstated.

Dee McGee

She needs her regeneration unit but they should have found some way to give her the same privacy as every other person on the ship.

Harmony through Time Mighty Mouse

Truth is had they returned home on time Kim likely would have been transfeered and promoted quickly you don’t givenumber four on the ship to an ensign, he should have been promoted as soon as they were stuck
