The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Critical Care. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Critical Care:
The Doctor must sidestep a tyrannical hospital administrator who kidnaps him and forces him to treat only privileged patients.

"The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few," is the line you were looking for.

Elisabeth Westner

Did I mishear or did someone say "The Voyager" on that episode? Or maybe that was on some behind the scenes thing I was watching.

Elisabeth Westner

GIANT LOL at Tuvok being the winner and Chakotay being the loser. So true. Also glad to hear Harry has good taste in musicals too. Cats, ugh. Love the animal, hate the musical.

Marian Bieniek

William Daniels was the voice of the Allocator.

Gildara

Guys the.meaning of the episode is that we shouldn't prioritize one human life over another. Right now in America there are many bright talented people who could contribute so much to our society but they are held back by inferior education and health care.

Marcy Beard

My theme is "be careful what you measure and what you prioritize - especially when AI is involved and it doesn't appear to have ethical subroutines". Whoever set up the system is the root cause of this, everyone else is blindly following orders until the Doctor comes along to open their eyes. Because it wasn't a botox equivalent (as far as I know - I assume botox is for appearance only), the injections were to prolong lives that were deemed "most important", which presumably would help the whole society. Obviously at the expense of those deemed "less important" by whatever measure the AI was programmed with. So an admirable goal of lifting everyone (on average) upward, but a terrible way to execute it because of the huge sacrifices forced upon some in return for questionable gain. Also the blatant ranking of lives - calling on all of us to ask questions about our current world. Hopefully with the lessons learned from the Doctor, the characters on that planet started working on improving their flawed system for the better. Or changing it completely. I just think "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" requires more nuance and balance. Sorry for the rambling :)

Anybody else now want a Voyager version of Hamilton? I’m intrigued by the idea!

Emmett Mullins

The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

Deborah Moltisanti

I was thinking today. Robbie, on the final episode of season 7, you should talk about the first jobs of all the regular cast!

Patrick Cucuta

I laughed so hard @ “murdercycle” 🤣

Mary Ann B

Did they mention Jim O’heir as part of the guest cast?
