The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Critical Care. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Critical Care:
The Doctor must sidestep a tyrannical hospital administrator who kidnaps him and forces him to treat only privileged patients.

This was one of my favorite Doctor based episodes. Such a great episode!

I forgot this was the episode where Tom and Harry play hockey! I'm recovering from a hockey injury now; I've definitely wished for Voyager's osteo-regenerator a few times.

The "AI' of our immediate AI future isn't even AI, it's machine learning, and its biases are heavily weighted towards the biases of its programmers. It can also be biased by inputs. One of the most well-known ML 'chatbots' released to the wild became violently racist within a few days of going live, and IIRC was parroting literal Nazi propaganda. Not only that, it only exists on stolen works: ChatGPT is trained on fanfiction (among many, many other things, but fanfiction is going to be a sizable source), Stable Diffusion famously trained on stolen artwork, etc etc. It stunned me when I heard WGA might consider AI-assisted writing 'with proper attribution' because, if they're using the current scraped database to do their writing, the potential for a show or film to outright rip off scraped fanfiction becomes impressively high. It's just another part of Silicon Valley's 'Move Fast and Break Sh*t' philosophy that's ripping a hole in the environment and the economy, and it's been eating the art world alive as of current.

First off the moral for me is be grateful for the NHS here in the uk. Second big nitpick but telepathy and mind melding have been explicitly explained as different things both of which vulcan's can do, so why didn't tuvok gar's mind? In fact why doesn't he do that more often when interrogating people would make a lot of sense for a security officer?

Gregory Itzin is such a great actor. He’s done numerous Trek roles. But to me he’ll always be President Logan from 24.

Craig Drebit

Haha okay this is really bugging me. The guy's name was "Vo-gee"!

I did attend a Microsoft seminar last summer led by women of colour who work on machine learning and AI at Microsoft and they spoke to this matter. It reassured me that they are aware and addressing the issue, but they still said it is absolutely biased to white men but they're trying... There weren't many white men in that seminar though, in fact, there weren't many men there at all. Sigh. It's a journey. I guess it's a two steps forward (Janeway and Torres rocking STEM), one step back (Jeri Ryan being made to wear that skintight ughhh) situation. It's tiring being a woman sometimes. I love data (not the character, who I never liked) and there is some really great stuff that can be achieved by machine learning, like in medical research and astrophysics, but we have to deal with echo chambers, confirmation bias and false narratives. ML needs to learn to ignore lies and to champion scientifically/historically valid facts.

I love the NHS. We are so lucky in the UK. I don't understand why America places multi-corporates and shareholders [and gun lobbies] before humans. I don't even think that I would get health insurance in the US; I have way too many bad things in my body. Instead I sit gratefully on an NHS waiting list desperate for my next course of treatment so I can live a semi-normal life for a few months. I wouldn't get rid of the NHS for all the world; it could definitely do with some EMHs to prop up the staffing levels though!

Now you did it. I need the. Voyager version of Hamilton.

Amber Holguin

This episode is in my top 10 favorite voyager episodes. My family and I work in the medical field and know how we need to "work the system" to get patients what they need. It's awful.

When’s Robbie gonna do the intro? It’d be a nice shakeup

I can never see the musical Cats now. Not that I planned to, but now I can not, for sure

Taisho Rose

I know that everyone's entitled to their opinions, but I'm gonna defend CATS because I feel like the hate against it is unwarranted, and it's influencing people to avoid it. The musical CATS was my gateway to live musical theater in my childhood. Granted, I grew up in the 80's/90's so I understand the tone it was capturing at the time -in the 80's/early 90's it was all about heightened fantasy, over the top theatrical prosthetic makeup, anthropomorphic characters, and LEGWARMERS! I don't see this amount of hate for Labyrinth, Legend, or the original Beauty and the Beast TV show starring Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton. CATS is just plain fun and the tunes are very catchy! The lyrics are directly taken from a beloved book of poetry by acclaimed poet TS Elliot. Star Trek fans may recall that in Star Trek IV, Kirk and Dr Gillian Taylor actually quote one of his poems about whales. Maybe CATS doesn't appeal to people who prefer some sort of structured 3 act narrative plot, but some art exists to challenge our expectations and break free of typical constraints. It features incredibly talented singers and dancers, and they even use opera singers for one portion of the show. One of my favorite actors known for intense dramatic roles, Richard Armitage, began his career playing Macavity in a West End run of CATS. See the musical live if you can before you judge it, and avoid the recent 2019 film adaptation like the plague!

ST Fan CB

I got 1hr 7mins before I found something to comment on which is a new record. So anyway guys you are killing me with not knowing the famous quote from ST: The Wrath of Khan. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one". It is also used in the reverse in the next movie (ST:The Search for Spock) "The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many". So how does the Doctor keep getting moved around without the use of holo-emitters that to my knowledge are NOT installed in the hospital. He is able to move around because of his mobile emitter. Are the aliens beaming him and the mobile emitter from one place to another? How can they have transporter tech when their medical tech is so primitive? The holodeck does different things throughout all of the incarnations of Star Trek but even in ST: Generations movie they still had to dress up. In the next movie ST: First Contact, Picard programmed clothes for them that were created on the holodeck for them. There is a hi-larious episode of Scrubs late in the series run where the gang has to bend and break rules to treat a patient who had no insurance. The hospital head doctor even told them to just do what they always do while he pretends not to notice. At the end, the Doctor says that he poisoned someone. I think that this was a script/dialog screwup and they were thinking about what Neelix did which was poisoning Garr. The Doctor deliberately infected the administrator with a disease.

Shane

Every time the Doctor is incapacitated, Tom Paris is pulled in to fill the void. However, whenever there is a large medical emergency a team of medics are on hand to help out (the last episode I remember this happenning was Unimatrix zero). Surely, Tom as a pilot isn't the best backup, particularly as he only has field medic training? What's voyagers training policy and redundancy?
