Chief animation correspondent Ben Clarkson returns to the show to look at the latest offering from Daily Caller’s original comedy content department, Adam Carolla’s adult cartoon Mr. Birchum. The crew wades into a miasma of poor animation, sloppy writing, gags from the (first!) Obama administration, and just a complete failure to understand its own joke or any jokes, filtered through the laziest sheen of contemporary adult animation eastern European content mills can produce. Plus, some original sleuthing on Ben’s part on the provenance of this show and its production process.

The first edition of Ben’s great Justice Warriors comic available here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Justice-Warriors/Matt-Bors/JUSTICE-WARRIORS/9781952090226

Is anyone listening to this sitting in seiza position, nude? I’m certainly not but I’m just wondering if anybody is

Schwartz666

Mmmm, I'm gonna try to wait & savor this sloppy delicacy while I'm gig slaving tomorrow afternoon... Slop it up whilst I slang swill.

ohnoitsthefuzz

In the middle of the night, I was walkin in my sleep, Til Chapo filled up the trough, With tasty slop so deeeep, In the middle of the niiiiiiight (in the middle Chapo, slop me please Chapo, in the middle Chapo, slop me please Chapo)

Justin Racine

5 Star Slop I am ready to eat with glee. Fuck Carolla. He's a dick.

ohnoitsthefuzz

Well now I am. I like sitting like that to admire the Leg Day progress I'm making.

Andrew Cross

“nobody eats stew anymore!!!” - some guy named stew idk man

Last Years Man

You know... the Sanford and Son theme is kind of a banger.

Schwartz666

Damn, I totally got this song stuck in my head now.

Waffle Poet

It really tickles me listening to Mr. Clarkson - talented artist, critic, and genuinely decent person - *ruthlessly* drag the Daily Wire’s pathetic content and even more pathetic “talent.”

Nick Paradise

You guys bring out the “beast” in me 🤌

Dan

In fairness to Adam Carolla, working construction is probably as dangerous/ more dangerous than military service, with a higher death toll and a much more tangible benefit to society. I would thank a carpenter for their service.

Evysaurus

Can you imagine being outsourced for keyframes on this piece of shit? Genuinely makes my skin crawl. It’s more grim than watching one of the FYM grotesques without the commentary.

Michael Ouderkirk

The character of Mr. Birchum actually pre-dates Crank Yankers going back to Carolla's time at KROQ in the 90s on the "Kevin & Bean" morning show.

William

Adam Corolla? More like Adam ford fiesta am I write

William

Ben, I caught you Rose-xan joke& appreciated it

MEAT CLOWN

I don't know what that means

Agent Grange

No one else laughed, it was an injustice.

Will

Lets gooo

Ben Clarkson

I felt good on that one, but it was a fluid situation.

Blair Rancich

I watched the trailer for context, and boy did it hurt to hear Patrick Warburtons voice in that pile of shit

Colin S

The Hammer time!

MrMojoRisin

Tuca & Bertie is cool actually. And there's definitely friction lol. It's like half a drama

Ray Tay

While I don't doubt how bad this is, that Duncanville show made my wife beg me to turn it off and never watch it again.

Jared Wright

I read "feat Ben Carson" and I was so excited. Now my day is ruined

demonsweat

"Jewish and gay" — The Varg Groyper

Bergus

Re cartoons. This guest sounds like a middle aged version of Andrew from Big Mouth.

b-rar

The politics being incoherent is perfectly in line with the modern conservative mindset. Every Republican has at some point whined about federal spending on foreign aid/migrants etc. in the framing of "We should be spending money here at home!" even though they believe in defunding and privatizing every public service other than the cops and the military

Tucci

I used to do the same lovline bit when I was a kid except after drew brings up molestation carolla would just say "I masturbate too much"

C. Ries

The show fails because it’s fake edgy and not mean enough. Actual right wing comedy is MDE

HeyB00B00

I love Sam Hyde!

Cy Parker

I don't think that Felix actually watched Tuca and Bertie. That show is nothing but friction, and it's mostly friction amongst the main 3 characters.

C. Ries

I hate him

Brian Pierson

I listened to the Adam Carolla podcast in late aughts/early 2010’s. Thank you for watching this show for all of us. It sounded harder than anything I have to do this week.

NYCM&AHole

The only adult animation that’s worth watching is Metalocalypse.

Chris Allen

As a former Loveline and Carolla head, this was such a validating episode all around. Also pretty depressing to realize he’s STILL recycling bits that were stale like 8 years ago when I finally bailed on his podcast.

Ant koz

Adam has been making the joke that pressing 3:33 instead of 3:00 when you use the microwave will change your life by making you an efficient person since early love line.

Robert Connor

Now imagining a world where the Daily Wire takes a chance on Sam Hyde and he spends all the money bullying Ben Shapiro

Muovi

He's such a vile character thar I can't really look past that

Gorgatron888

To be fair, Mr. Birchum was a character Carolla used on KROQ here in Southern California from the early nineties to the early 2000s, specifically on Kevin and Bean in the mornings. It was funny then but I was also like 8, 10 when I heard it. New York/Midwest elites just don't get it folks!

Adam

It’s also not even true. On my microwave entering ‘3’, ‘start’ runs it for 3 minutes.

David Browm

"The brick and mortar store!" Yes, Comrade Birchum, the last capitalist we shall hang will be the one that sold us the rope!

Vivian Irby

I wanna know what highschool still teaches shop class, they stopped that shit like 15 years ago

John Swan

Congrats Felix on the new rig

Garrat M

The animation on this show feels like it was done by the animation team from Brickleberry and it's various degenerating spin offs. But they were being held as gun point to get it out as fast as possible

Cullen S

Ben was spot on about the animation whiplash for Felix/Will. Going from Oshii to this dumpster fire is like savoring a wonderful meal, then having bear fur coated dingleberries shoved into your pie hole

Reece Coren

matt is literally charlie

Abbi

Exactly. It’s such a beautiful show about the complexity of relationships. I was surprised how it came out of his mouth more than once when he obviously hasn’t actually watched more than a clip of it

bruce

Different Strokes groyper

bruce

The problem isn't that the jokes aren't mean. The problem is the content of the joke isn't about bearing out what is silly about Wokeness or whatever,it's about reaffirming that conservatives are right about it. There's a reason south park can have a pretty conservative outlook on a lot of things without being so viciously unfunny, it's because the jokes aren't always explicitly to affirm political priors. A joke can just be about a thing

KIDBOOYA420

You know the real conservative comedy is Smilling Friends . It’s a good show , but you can tell it leans conservative

NovalisGuy

The voice Felix kept doing sounded like sgt Hatred

Jackson

Most microwaves now you just press a number and it immediately starts at that in minutes, you have to hit time cook to input a specific minute and seconds value

NYCM&AHole

Forgot about this but never watched it. I am neutral on the horseman. I am also not sure re archer

Ashley Naftule

Yeah, overall this episode is great but Tuca & Bertie catching multiple strays was bewildering. I haven’t seen the first season on Netflix but the Comedy Central run of the show is full of flawed character moments

Dan

Anyone who finds the surly, old-fashioned Conservative Dad archetype endearing didn't grow up with one.

burgerpocalypse

key frames are primary poses characters make, and you put frames of motion in between those to make them appear animated. With 24 frames of animation a second, studios usually just make the key frames, and outsource the in-between frames, since there's significantly more of them and animators only have so much cartilage in their wrist

Michael

Mr Birchum seems like a low rent poor imitation version of F is For Family.

MKatieUltra

Carolla totally was funny! I never watched The Man Show, but I grew up w Love Line and started listening to his podcast in like 2010, it was great because he'd get so many good comedians as guests. Over time, he became less self deprecating and more libertarian and un-self-aware. My work sibling and I would hate listen to his podcast and bitch about it together and check his subreddit, so many people felt the same way. He was increasingly buddy buddy with fucking Dennis Praeger too. I finally gave up in 2016. It was completely unshocking to hear his wife finally divorced him.

Michael

Copy this comment and email it to the “Executive Producer” of this show.

Michael

“The dad is the source of authority and he must be respected.” Sounds like John Kass’s kind of show.

Foxx Navarro

Dang I liked Tuca and Bertie

Meatwad Cosby

Home Improvement was not about how woke kids are that’s Last Man Standing. I loved Home Improvement was 90s conservative dad stuff like “What happens when one of my kids is goth? What about when they get caught smoking cigarettes behind the bleachers?”

Smith's Fine Electric Amusements

A terrible ep of people yelling and annoyingly laughing like hyenas at the tritest of observations. A shame, because the Blaze making such a shitty show as this should have been ammunition for much better.

James Proulx

One of the things that I'm embarrassed to admit is that I used to listen to Adam Carolla's podcast back in around 2009. It was funny and he hadn't gone completely psycho yet. Of course, the signs were there. The coded racism, the psychotic screaming whenever any of his crew did something that pissed him off, etc. He treated everyone on the show like garbage and I soon bailed on it but I have to admit that, for at least a few months there, I was listening every week.

Robert Ritchie

Including Carolla. His dad was a pretty hippy psychologist (or somesuch).

MKatieUltra

Yeah, it felt similar to my racist uncles, I guess that gave it a strange but offputting familiarity. I tolerated it because the guests could be good. Also it was the biggest/most downloaded podcast for a while, like literally a Guinness Record.

Stolzie

The comment about how modern Cons are all about “Daddy is always right” is perfect. In the US, Republicans’ entire platform is “more money and guns for rich ppl” and yeah.

Jimmy McMillan

Bill Burr is currently the funniest comedian performing. Adam Carolla is a washed up has been who needs right wing welfare to keep working. I need to check out F is for Family. It looks good

James Proulx

He talked openly about growing up poor/working class in West Hollywood and how his parents basically didn't emote and his struggles with that. He was really sweet when talking about his kids. There was a genuine human there at one point, before his brain succumbed to whatever it is that makes boomers go batshit in their fifties and just start screaming at everyone. And yeah, he had some good guests. Hearing that he got divorced is sadly not a shocker. The way he would scream at the top of his lungs and the women who were his co-hosts was awful.

MKatieUltra

Well, I think he’s borderline a gen Xer, and idk if you’ve seen that one graph, but they have THE MOST lead exposure, and as they age, all the lead in their bones gets released into the blood stream 🙃 (disclaimer not all gen Xers)

Jackson

I love how often Felix refers to King Von as a measure of how many people someone has killed

Mickey Foley

When they mentioned Sage Steele, I checked her Wikipedia page. Turns out Candace Owens was originally supposed to play that role on Mr. Birchum. Look what those Zionists took from us!

Dan

So he's a Ned Flanders, minus the Christianity and kindness? That does seem to be a type.

Meatwad Cosby

Can I get a dang hammer flavored hammer?

Michael

F is For Family is an alright show. It has the ill tempered dad trying to hold it together. Also it pokes fun at the 1970s in a pretty funny way.

Felix

As a fellow Felix with a 4090, I should have figured that Felix has a 4090 lol.

Man2quilla

Will getting angry at Felix for doing the voice just confirms for me that this and Trashfuture are mirror versions of each other

Gulb

Dr. Drew saying women with high pitched voices have been molested is my main memory of Love Line.

LEAH NELSON

When Felix says “NAY-getive” and you remember he’s from the Midwest

Mac daddy

Adam Carolla having a fetish for hardworkin men who drink beer on the job site is so funny and makes a lot of sense considering his career. If he'd ever done it, he'd know how miserable those cunts are lol

Shfifty_five

That's actually pretty cool. Glad they were able to find funding. Dropping vocational ed, shop, and home ec/basic life skills classes under crippling austerity measures is partially why most millennials are in massive amounts of debt and trying to compete in a massively oversaturated job market in industry and academia while there's a shortage of people in things like construction, plumbing, and electrical.

Oliver Elliott

Archer is mixed, but I always chuckle when I think about his cell phone going off. Also, my life would be complete if I had Mallory’s office.

Garrat M

I know it was supposed to be a joke. But this show has been in production hell since 2011. I remember watching a pilot for this on Fox back then never hearing about it again till that dog shit trailer for it

Jim Carter

Not to be that guy, but Corolla didn’t debut the Mr Birchum character on Crank Yankers, it goes back even farther than than, to the Kevin & Bean morning show on KROQ in LA in the early 1990s, i.e. not only longer ago than the Loveline TV show, it was longer ago than him getting the Loveline radio gig on KROQ

J.P. McD.

“Take off your coat” - I haven’t seen the show but this part sounds an awful lot like Clarkson does not understand that that’s the joke?

Bruno Drundridge

Oh, Carolla had been doing Mr. Birchum long before Crank Yankers. Since at least the mid-90s. There's no reason to know this if you're not a local boy, but Carolla got his start on drive-time radio in LA. He befriended Jimmy Kimmel, who was the sports guy on a popular morning show, and began doing phone-in bits for the show. I say "bits", but it was easily like 95% Birchum. Carolla's insane thing is he doubles-down on his image as a blue collar working man whenever he becomes exponentially richer. He's done it like six times now. It's fascinating to watch. He genuinely could not be more estranged from that part of his life, recording a podcast in his air-conditioned supercar garage in the Hollywood Hills, but he'll never give it up.

Luke Witherell

Not at all related to the ep-- I just found out there's a new Broadway musical called "Suffs" that's Hamilton but with white feminists, and I can't stop laughing and felt like Gray Wolfs would appreciated that.

Luke Witherell

Not sure if this is a joke haha. But if you're serious, I've listened to lots of hours of its co-creator Zach Hadel on podcasts/YouTube, and he's very Shane Gillis: hardly conservative and often critical of dumb conservative culture war shit but also not "PC" in a literal sense.

Jameson .

Shut up dweebage

PP Cool P

Newer listener here. Can anyone explain the music groyper thing?

THEKILLERWHALE

Yeah, it's funny how you can pretty much chart an alternative materialist explanation of human history by measuring the ambient lead levels in the populace.

THEKILLERWHALE

Yeah, I think that the difference is that show forced the main character to actually engage with things outside of his comfort zone instead of sniping about them on facebook. And when you have a society where people are spatially isolated and only engage with others from behind the wheel of a car, real life becomes theoretical and goth kids become more ominous. Hence the weirdness of the modern conservative movement in spite of the fact a modern society really should not have this many weird ass people.

THEKILLERWHALE

Someone should really make a supercut of all the weird-ass shit they did on that show. And a two sentence molestation diagnosis supercut.

Eric

honestly i’ve listened since 2017 and i don’t think i could tell you what a groyper actually is with a gun to my head

Lettuce Jones

Groyper is the copywrite friendly, fatter, and smugger version of Pepe the Frog created by 4chan nazis after Pepe's creator sued infowars for using Pepe on a poster they created. Groyper was adopted as the mascot for Nick Fuentes's fans at some point or for whatever reason they just started calling themselves groypers.

Doug Cartel

Adam corolla is having his vietnam moment where he goes 'i was wrong to make fun of those guys, actually, I love them' but he's referring to all the fake masculinity of the 90s that he used to lampoon instead of Nam guys. His protagonist sounds like he listened to those morons who thought Homer Simpson and oeter griffin were feminst assaults on the sanctity of dad-hood, and somewhere along the way he decided girls who like cars are not in fact future lesbians, which is what he would have thought back then, or at least that was what 90s guys would say.

C. Andrew

Anyone know what the song at the end? Or is Chris getting into producing broken transmission/vaporwave now, you'd have fifties of fans.

Robert Ritchie

Fatboy Slim - Always Read the Label for the base track

Michael

Looks like they did Owens a real favour in hindsight.

Reece Coren

what the hell is tooka and birdie

Gubriel

Even Sam Hyde has the thing that Chapo talked about with conservative comedians where he gets too mad at woke or women or feminine men and loses his sense of humor. It falls into an incoherent pile of signals to other online dummies

Zack Burke

Mr. Burcham in a robe and UC Santa Cruz t-shirt looking at a busted backhoe in his driveway "why is there a dead digger in my driveway?"

Natalie

Netflix animated comedy starring Ali wong

Jack Ingle

I was at the Houston show I loved "Secret Uncles" and I've been listening to Pendejo Time since! I would watch it.

Reece Coren

who the hell is ali wong

Ksizzle

Chapo’s talked a bit of smack on tuca & bertie before, and while i understand why someone might cringe at it sometimes i feel like it catches underserved flack. There’s plenty of friction and fights between characters, they have falling outs. Bojack too for some reason chapo thinks its like super lib’d up and i just don’t see it.

Ksizzle

Feel the same, bojack also i dont think their criticisms hold up

Natalie

I'm dumb and uncultured but I thought the thumbnail was from the show for a bit too long

Natalie

I guess you'll never know until you bing it

Natalie

I watched it all in college and remember nothing about it tbh

Natalie

ben is amazing for sleuthing the production details out

m@tt

I’m old and uncultured. I used to enjoy Burchum and Carolla in that love line era.

Dame

Multiple big Felix laughs in an episode hell yeah

Vanessa

Even better, Hillary Clinton is one of the producers lmao

Colto

The one cartoon that will make people want to go outside

Mac daddy

That just makes it funnier that he fetishizes it tbh. He has a soft career and is ashamed of it when he should be happy he left that shit behind lol

Nolan

Yes Mr.Birchum, just like that . Finish securing those tires and use that impact gun on my asshole!

Johnny B

No need for the strays at Bluey Great ep

Baby truck

Fun fact about Bluey: the Australian public broadcaster the ABC (our version of the BBC) funded Bluey and owns distribution rights to it in Aus, but the UK BBC owns the global rights and has netted about $2bn from it the ABC (Aus one) didn’t buy the global rights is because the right wing gov LOVES beating up the public broadcaster (0.07c/day for each taxpayer) and saying the taxpayer shouldn’t fund the broadcaster etc and now it’s a $2bn golden goose for the Brits

Mac daddy

Its so fucking funny. Created one of the most popular kid's shows ever and could've funded the ABC for another 50 years off of it, instead they'll probably be privatized by 2035. (Not that I watch any of their shit, but I feel bad for my parents and every other lefty boomer who will never stop watching the ABC)

Reece Coren

one day we will tell our grandchildren about Chapo’s summer 2024 run. what a time to be a grey wolf

Reece Coren

lmao i forgot tyler fischer got banned from fox for being a creep. long live the tyler fischer fans subreddit

Ant koz

In 2001, 2002 when I was in 6th and 7th grade, I listened to loveline on my clock radio every night. I thought Adam Corolla was so fucking funny. The bit i remember most is when he would talk about people in LA that were too scared to run red left turn arrows and he would be screaming PUSSIES YOURE ALL PUSSIES literally as loud as he could and as a sixth grader I would be lying in the dark literally crying laughing… during Covid I did apartment maintenance and a perk of the job was non stop listening and I went back and listened to some old loveline episodes and was blown away at how mid it was. Corolla had moments of being mildly funny but the quack medical advice doctor drew was giving these kids was really unbelievable. What a time to be alive the early oughts were….
