Wassup Gode, wanna shout out Richmond as cool as hell. I played in a band that used Richmond as our east coast home base about a decade ago.. the diy punx scene was so cool I hope it’s still strong, we played a couple shows under the i95 bridge, a couple warehouses, one house show in particular where I thought I was going to die in a collapse, I’ve never seen walls shake like that, coolest house show I ever played... We made over a grand that night on door money alone at a house show that was free/donate what you want.. it paid for gas for the whole rest of the tour. We also had some bonfires and rock jump hole swimming parties at the pipeline trail downtown on the James… Richmond rules, highly underrated city!! Truly one of the best and most supportive communities of real progressive lefties I’ve ever been around… Thanks for the report

Chris, they're not backwards contradictory political beliefs based on resentment and an obsession with being "independent," it's called being a "free thinker." In Virginia, in pretty much every election urban centers in the reddest counties are still blue (many of these are also college towns -- Harrisonburg, Radford, Staunton, Lexington, on Route 81 down the Blue Ridge Mountains -- but even small cities like Winchester and Roanoke City, are still blue; Martinsville, Virginia, which sits on the North Carolina border in Henry County, VA is blue). Charlottesville, sits in Albermarle County, which is one of the richest county's in the state -- also home to Trump's Winery. Albermarle County and its nearly 70,000 voters voted for Harris at the same rate as Fairfax County's ~590,000 voters in the northern part of the state. Charlottesville, home of UVA, voted for Harris at a higher rate than the bluest counties in Northern Virginia. You can guess pretty easily how different areas in the state are going to vote based on median income, population density, racial diversity, or a combination of those factors.

I could talk about the state endlessly, but one thing I would throw out there is that there is this mini-Woodstock style festival that happens in southwestern, Virginia "FloydFest", which has been going on for over 20 years now, which kind of defies some of the easy stereotypes (roughly 10,000 people over a multi-day concert event). Southern hippies are a unique variety, since their counter-culture is in part a reaction against white southern evangelical Christianity, but they share many commonalities with hippies in other regions of the country. Before he came in, when Felix & Will were covering people who went full-genocide support, I was reminded of about 2 weeks after Oct. 7 when I was listening to somebody I used to admire, the comedic actor Harry Shearer, on his podcast "Le Show."
