Ideologicallly, of course I support hijab-optional etc while the current Iranian administration has been ineffectual domestically with minimum support. The only anti-hijab activists I have experience with are the diaspora on Twitter, they are extremely reactionary pro-monarchist (Shah) Zionists with a liberal aesthic towards Kurds but a preference for Arab genocide. Doubt citizens are like this. The protests seem like a grassroots/OP mix. Some are about the hijab while others are calling for the overthrow of the gov. Lots are peaceful some seem to chaotic / violent

Hell yeah dude

This episode is a sleeper: it's yet to hit us, but last week might be one of the most eventful to future dirt-historians of the 21st century.

P$

I’ve been laughing all week picturing Nancy Pelosi blowing up NS2

The Brits don't even get to fall back on the commonwealth because part of the deal to join the EU back in the 60's was they had to tear up any trade deals with the Commonwealth nations. The commonwealth is a plaything for the Crown but it's really just a useless diplomatic forum with a kids table for the 14 countries still wanting to pretend to have a monarch while being de-facto republics. The Brits themselves really have nothing.

Munir hakim

Could they ever pull it back and get the trade deals up and running again? are they competent enough

Clean Shirt Piggie

Hoppy Beerday and mazel tov to Cushbomb. Loving my Club Carousel made in Honduras tee, Chris. Thanks to Felix for helping union textile workers abroad

Sam

The entire foreign policy project for the United States in Europe currently is rapid deindustrialization to eliminate their capacity to meaningfully trade with China (and Russia obviously) and make them dependent client states. It is absolutely in US interests to blow up that pipeline and accelerate that project. And Brandon is irrelevant at this point. That should be obvious.

Sam

“Shoddy Russian construction” Jesus dude.

J P 3

The Sikorsky tweet about Nordstream 2 left some room for interpretation, but I think it was pretty clear from later statements, and also from context, that he wasn't being ironic. U.S. opposition to Nordstream 2 was obviously self-serving and self-interested, but the past year in particular has highlighted the issues with European reliance on Putin's regime for energy exports. Also, blowing up the pipeline (probably the Russians -- government officials in Denmark, Norway, and Germany didn't hesitate to point in this direction), achieves near-term Russian objectives of raising pressure on Europe and boosting gas prices at a time when they were starting to fall. Given that oil and gas exports are the primary funding source for the Russian federal budget, downward movement in the price of these commodities is a big hit to the Russian economy (these exports were about 40% of the federal budget funding in 2019, now it is almost certain a much higher percentage).

Poppy Chulo

If they bring back fascism in Italy they have to make that lady wear the Mussolini hat with the little tassle on it. Also I want to see the blackshirts looking like Imperial officers, the kind that Vader chokes out in the original trilogy.

Minnesota_Cold

oh cool! Seamus! the one person on earth who makes me agonizingly insecure about my own mid-20s accomplishments lol

I am SO GLAD you guys kept it real about the hurricane. I’m from Florida. Those were all rich idiots who are going to be just fine. Plus they are ruining the earth. Fuck them.

26:13-27:09 In Italy in particular, Tolkien's novels have a history of being used as a signifier by the fascist Right. Between 1977 and the early eighties, the Italian fascist Right held a series of youth retreat camps that they advertised as "Hobbit Camps"; in more recent years some of the contemporary fascist Right have tried to revive this practice. Unsurprisingly, the 'Lord of the Rings' novels are enjoyed by white nationalists and fascists world-wide, as their narrative is about ethnically distinctive, separate and traditionalist societies defeating an encroaching multi-ethnic foreign horde; in Italy, this reading of the novels and the popularity of the franchise lent themselves to the New Right's organizing in the 1970's. One of the key organizers of these "Hobbit Camps" was the fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI), which Meloni used to be a member of in her youth. When the new PM says that she likes Tolkien, it is likely this history that she is gesturing towards.

Oscar

Why are the French still able to collect colonial taxes from their former West African colonies if the UK couldn't keep trade deals with the commonwealth nations?

Re: the Iran Protests, I think that it is a false dichotomy to counterpose whether a protest is a genuine expression of discontent and opposition indigenous to a population, or a foreign-orchestrated machination of enemy intelligence services. Neither of these are mutually exclusive; the CIA routinely exploits legitimate local grievances in their schemes to topple states. It is intuitive that the intelligence agencies of the US, Israel, Gulf states, etc. will seize every opportunity to interfere in Iran ( and elsewhere), so we shouldn't dismiss allegations of foriegn interference out of hand.

Felix pronouncing "Eurosceptic" with a soft C in the middle is lowkey Chapo Excellence

K H

I'm gay actor Michael Douglas and I can confirm I went in dry while running a train on Liz with Elizabeth Warren at the BDSM asylum under the pizza place.

K H

So Ahmadinejad's CIA handler likes Michigan football?

K H

A sewer of mirrors.

K H

Well the fact it's being covered at all is the tip of the hand. Woman dies in police custody and protest erupts followed by crack down. Is that really news? Saudi morality executions aren't covered, protests in Israel pass in total silence. Indian protests aren't followed. A narrative is definitely being formed. Is Ahmadinejad allowed to take power again? Would explain some things.

Jayvee Sy

Nobody appreciates Angela Merkel until now

Jeffrey Miller

The news coverage is the inherent bias of the western media. It's one reason why the American system of controlling information is so effective. A lot of the work is done by institutions who believe they're playing the part of the free press.

Nolan

Truss is the British Jason Bourne

William

Oh man. Watching "smart" or rich people completely eat shit over and over again is the best

William

Dude who fucking cares. None of this is relevant - they don't actually care if she likes the hobbit or not and if Tolkien never wrote his books, Nazis would just fixate on another series. Why don't you tell us all about the Senate parliamentarian next, and the long history and traditions the job has

AbeLinkin

Unfortunately, I don’t think only rich people were hurt by this. Lots of brainwashed and functionally illiterates who grew up in Florida’s public education system who didn’t stand a chance were likely caught off guard too. DeSantis praised distrust of the media during all of Covid and the vax campaign so why would his constituents suddenly listen to the “experts” now telling them they should evacuate? That said, as a MA guy who just witnessed DeSantis send immigrants to my state (as if we don’t already have immigrant populations who come here), I wouldn’t mind seeing him flounder. I’m happy they were sent here since it seemed to wake up sleepy Martha’s Vineyard, but fuck that guy for using people as pawns.

Corey JOHNSTON

The US definitely blew up the Nord Stream pipelines.

Dr Nermal Funkenstein

I saw a post on Reddit about a guy who let his 1 of 250 Porsche 964 and 2 other cars get fucked with 3 feet of saltwater. Fuck those jerk offs

Cameron Dunleavy

Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng have shagged. He went in dry allegedly

William

Can you not see the button that already does this?

William

Waaaaaaaahhhhhhh

William

Yeah, it's a higher percentage because prices have skyrocketed and they've made more money than ever selling oil

B2B Commuter

The Michigan GOP got super desperate and tried something similar to the Truss dirt road bull shit in 2018. A rumor was circulated in political circles that Gretchen Whitmer was infamous at her affluent Grand Rapids area high school for loving anal to the point that she got the nickname “Gretch the Stretch” Seventh graders are bad ratfuckers because she still won by double digits.

William

Lol it's so funny that you can't even hear a throwaway comment from a podcaster without getting upset. Cool foreign policy analysis btw. I'm sure it's correct

B2B Commuter

Lmao. I read this comment before I got to the part of the episode where he said “eurosceptic” and still I was entirely unprepared for it.

William

Are people actually making themselves anxious about the Italy election?

DadRockVhs666

i wasnt going to masutrbate but i read this comment and now i am going to masturbate #deepstate

Savannakhet

The French are smarter than us.

Kyle Matthiesen

Anybody trying to throw a dog a bone and sell me a Chapo ticket for Saturday at the Vic in Chicago???

Ozzie

Liz Truss took the chain off a hanging light fixture and turned it into a necklace

C. Ries

Even when Italy was actually fascist and allied to the Nazis nobody was scared of them. A comical and incompetent people

Jon W

Someone on the Discord - #chapotraphouse feed - was literally trying to give a ticket away, yesterday.

C. Ries

It sounds like a better deal for Europe than the US frankly…

C. Ries

It’s crazy that these people consider other extremely similar nerds subhuman bugs for owning funko pops or watching star trek when they are obsessed with middle earth and painting their warhammer figs

Of course

Max Blumenthal suggests that the BrandonGuv will use/manipulate the Iranian protests to end the nuclear talks in the same way it used/fueled Cuban protests to end talks to restore Obama-era liberalization of relations. Makes sense to me.

K H

I honestly don't think they even really believe that anymore.

Doug Cartel

oh yeah, I see the winds of change blowing, and I see a New American Century, where every European has an SUV too large for their narrow streets and Big Macs the american dream its coming folx

protob1

So, the Russians sailed to the middle of the Baltic Sea, into international waters, demolished both Nord stream pipelines, losing billions in profits and potentially causing irreparable damage their own energy infrastructure, for which they spent years and billions constructing...for what, to cause a temporary spike in energy price and fuck with the EU? You Amerikans are a very special combination of dangerous and stupid.

Ashton Bush

FYI there is a tiny bit of feedback whine during Seamus's part of the interview.

Doug Cartel

liz truss. liz trussy, liz sussy, liz sussy trussy, uh liz trapezoid, help me out here

Of course

I think the fear is... there's a trend that the overlords of a conflicted and collapsing capitalism, ruling over alienated + desperate people and a dying planet, shut down any reformist or leftish direction - often in most cynical ways, and seek continuation of their institutions and states via fascism, or clown fascism, or techno-feudalism, or neo-imperialism, or whatever we want to call it. It's not just the most overt displays of rightwing fuckery, it's the fact that liberals+allies permit no escape from certain doom.

William

There's never been any escape. There's been delusions that it's possible but one side has been very clear that it will resort to anything to get what it wants

Steeeeve

Gretch the Stretch lmao, that's absolutely foul.

Sam

Yea, the Midwest of the United States is doing great under this arrangement

Sam

Yeah god forbid these people don’t have shit takes on foreign policy fed directly to them from the same trash newspapers that they spend 30 mins an episode talking shit about when it comes to domestic politics.

Matt Crossin

US always tries to turn events to favour its policies, as all governments do. But also Max is a fucking idiot.

Greg

Some one help, who were they talking about "pleading out and looking at 5 years" around the 36 min mark?

Jimmy McMillan

Felix says no amount of training can make cops act brave. It's worse than that. I listened to a Behind the Bastards podcast on police training and they're training cops to be deadly cowards. Be suspicious of everyone, crime is getting worse, and you always have to be prepared to use deadly force

dawood

nobody wants to win elections anymore

Ol-Dirty-BAStart

Of all the political analysis I was planning on wrestling with today, "Does UK PM enjoy getting bummed raw" was not high on the list, but this the timeline

J P 3

Nordstream 2 was a joint venture between Gazprom and other European oil and gas companies. The destruction of the pipeline provides several short-term benefits to Russia. e.g. not just an increase in gas prices; it also provides Russia an out to do something it had already threatened to do -- cut gas supplies to Europe (and to do so while providing a legal fig-leaf for non-performance). Of course long-term this is destructive to Russian interests. But the same is true of pretty much every aspect of Putin's escalation of the war in Ukraine since Feb 2022 (up to and including his threat of nuclear war).

J P 3

Oil and gas revenue is a higher percentage in part because of an increase in prices, it is also because other major sources of revenue have declined in absolute terms. e.g. including double-digit declines in weapons sales, and other sectors. Energy and food are the only things keeping the Russian economy afloat at this point, so price movements matter more than they usually do.

Sam

Well the host of Behind the bastards is a cop, so he should know

Treppy

lol you can not like him i get it. he is very critical of american policing. he’s never said a good word about it.

C. Ries

The only whining I’m hearing is coming from you

C. Ries

Baked Alaska aka Tim Gionet

Chad Foster

Baked Alaska, I'm pretty sure

Greg

Thanks!

Maxwell Harkness

the only fear is that Italy tends to predict all of the stupidest political trends in the rest of the world.

Treppy

ayyyoooooo

Nolan

Craig’s Schindler’s list.

SF

Matt, you are literally an anarchist.

Ashton Bush

big talk from someone literally named Cries, but ok

William

hahahahaha, you're concerned their TAKES will be bad? oh no! we can't let people have bad opinions! they'll be completely uninformed when the foreign policy establishment just does what it was going to do anyways!

William

cool. I'm sure someone will be glad you shared your very basic opinion

Sam

It takes just as much energy to write the original comment as it does to respond to it. Idk man if none of it matters than I’m cool with none of it mattering and can accept that this is just spinning wheels in the mud while we wait for the apocalypse. Not sure what you’re getting out of this other than being gay.

protob1

Excuse me for misunderstanding, right. Russia and its companies as a majority stakeholder in Nord stream, detonated underwater explosives in international waters for a short-term price increase of gas and a 'legal out'. Only a mewling Amerikan idiots like you, who grew up on jingoism and gun & butter imperialism, can consider this Tom Clancy, toilet reading spy novel scenario plausible! War and its consequences are coming to your shores.

Steeeeve

There's a shitload of people in Italy right now who are probably scared. Sorry but I'm going to guess you have america brain

William

Oh, sorry for living in a continent sized country that's been the center of everything for the last one hundred years. I was talking about people in America being upset about Italian fascism. I should've known that there'd be people like you who were too stupid to make that leap in logic

Khemith

Italy is definitely on track for more fascism. Italy along with Greece were the most affected by the financial collapse.

J P 3

What value was Nordstream to Russia as recently as two weeks ago? In recent months they have slowed the flow of gas to Germany through other routes because of "repairs" (e.g. something that pretty much everyone understood as a means of trying to raise costs for the German government). They could have increased flows through other routes, but have opted not too. I'm not saying any of this either from a point of American jingoism. Unlike Putin apologists I don't believe my country is blameless and a perpetual victim. I don't believe in naive and simplistic formulations either that "U.S. does something bad equals Putin must be good". I think the Iraq War was a massive strategic blunder and a crime. I don't think Putin's adoption of the Bush doctrine (with a Hitlerian twist) is good for the world either. If Putin thinks he needs to escalate with the U.S. to save face for his massive blunder, I don't think anyone is likely to win. The war ends, if he withdraws to the borders that existed before 2014. Of course, he will lose his power inside Russia now if that happens. That is the issue, not the U.S.

etienne

the french are so good at ratfucking the EU. everyone is mad at how much protectionism they get away with

etienne

use a podcatcher for christ sake

Tim O'

Thanks for talking to Séamus, so hard to get a realistic picture of what's happening in Iran from western media.

Mark Schneider

Shorter: when Bush did it I admit it was bad. Still, if others do it, it's not acceptable. (Additionally: there is no Azov Battalion, only Putin does things "with a Hitlerian twist", Godwin's law dumbest version)

Zachary Bills

Matt Orchard is up there with JCS in for quality in their genre .

Clint Pelvis

billy thinks the chapo ppl are his friends plz leave him alone

Maxwell Harkness

I love that will believes whatever an Irish 10 year old tells him - that being said appreciate Seamus giving some knowledge on the Iranian protests. My instinct is supportive but cautious of American involvement

J P 3

Putin's justification in Feb 2022 was functionally the same as Hitler's for the Anschluss in 1938. e.g. creation of Greater Russia based on a claim of cultural and racial superiority. Prior to 2022, there may have been more ambiguity. e.g. was this an aggressive war, or a civil war centered on a border region? Putin's decision to invade Kyiv through Belarus turned this war into something qualitatively different. Obviously there are fascists fighting on both sides of this conflict. However, in terms of prioritization, I see a political formation of a few thousand fighters like Right Sektor and Azov as a less immediate concern, than a nuclear armed state like Putin's Russia that has actively supported fascists movements in Europe and the U.S., which is currently engaged in an aggressive war in Europe, which has made not-so-veiled nuclear threats against the U.S. and our allies. There is always a right to self-defense -- especially when there is an invading army crossing borders. That logic is harder to justify when we are talking about "preventative" wars against hypothetical threats.

Shane Harkness

I have never seen someone else with my last name outside of family. Or maybe you're my dad???

William

how DARE he. At long last, has he lost all sense of decency?

William Beamish

im aghasp @ felix' cavalier attitude!!!!! my monocle popped out and into my cornpops

Khemith

Why do people expect so much out of cops? They are just thugs. Hands to put on the enemies of the state and capital.

Matt

Stop saying England when you mean Britain

Luis Martinez

Kendall Rae is also a good true crime YouTubers she actually raised funds and did a documentary

Checkout Chick

You guys only just found out about the day collar? Adorable

etienne

yeah us trashfuture listeners found out about it literally a week ago! old news

sophie

i’ve always defended the boys over the many spurious accusations of sexism leveled against them but as a longtime female listener the misogyny in this episode was really painful to listen to tbh :(

sophie

i mean talking about how female politicians fucked their way to the top is pretty textbook…

Hall wingfield

Yeah but they all assume it's bullshit

Poppy Chulo

In the context of it being a lie. Funny how context is always the first casualty with reactionaries.

Billy Titus

Your use of the word “boys” is very misandrist.

Elliot Matheny

My dude’s playing these mp3 files on a 2003 Razr flip phone, ain’t got no podcatcher

Elliot Matheny

You tell ‘em, William! Who cares if dyed in the wool fascists are seizing power in rich, powerful countries? Certainly that doesn’t portend negative consequences in the future!

sophie

reactionaries?? lmao what?

sophie

whatever i’m just saying this stuff they’re repeating isn’t funny or remarkable or worth talking about it’s just juvenile and unfunny

Chris

This comment automatically makes her critique valid

Alek

The starlink thing is particularly ridiculous because having a star link port in your home is like having another refrigerator lol it uses that much power

JASON

I think you’re referring to Cape Coral, every home has an ocean access canal for your dumbass boat. It’s such a poorly planned shithole. Or paradise depending on who you ask.

Ian Woods

Came looking for this comment. Matt’s stuff is great and like, anti-lurid

Andrés Martínez

This episode was so dogshit that it forced me to listen the Adam Friedland show
