In one of our various irregular series, Matt's going to be taking a look at the history of Mexico and U.S.-Mexican relations through time. These eps are going to feature Matt with some guests in conversation, starting with our 19th century All-Star Matt Karp. Matt and Matt are talking about the U.S.-Mexico war, which, if you've listened to Hell of Presidents, you'll know is (at least here in the states) a kind of under-discussed foundational moment in all of the rest of our shared histories. They discuss the motivations for the war, the Mexican political perspective, the course of the conflict, root beer, the Irish, death by diarrhea, and much more.

caseman

C'mon folks how are there tickets for the Florida show left

J.P. McD.

@Chris I’m finishing up What Hath God Wrought and don’t want spoilers on the war, so don’t worry about the listening metrics for a week or two

CJ

Fuck yeah fuck yeah fuck yeah

etienne

chris already got scammed by not getting back his copyrights after a license period but you're getting double scammed by getting nothing out of nothing

Caligulette

Inebriated Pasts are my favorites :)

John Tobias

Does anyone know if the shamrock brigade and the st. Patrick's battalion is the same thing?

Big McLargehuge

Awesome, thanks all. I recently watched the movie ‘Juarez’ with my dad. It’s got Bette Davis & features a lot of poor Maximilian I - it also makes sure to praise Lincoln a lot lol & makes a young Porfirio Diaz look good. And Paul Muni plays Juarez… not the worst thing to watch while scarfing down some popcorn

skrrt vonnegut

27:55 Matt I know in my heart you wanted to say "Mormin On Up"

David

love all Karp Kontent

J.P. McD.

I have the annual expiring in 2 months, will relisten to some of them before it’s over. etienne is there a link to info on them being actually scammed or are you just describing what you think the deal was?

Jessica Rios

How the hell didn’t they know they made a pun when the guy said they needed a dysentery version of Call of Duty (doodie)?

Alan Fulcher

Matt has unleashed the tiger.

Gulb

Points for use of the word "concatenate"

Munir hakim

I wish I could come to ft Lauderdale:( I don't have the big bucks to travel from tx

Munir hakim

I wonder if they got scammed too. I wonder why blowback left stitcher as well.

Munir hakim

If I could go I would but idk if I can take a bus to Florida and back tx like that

riotous indignation

This was fine but I really don't like not hearing the live shows anymore. Terrible move to stop posting them

DRV

Bitch, bitch, bitch

Ben Barrett

Love the inebriated past eps, felt like I did elephant lines of cocaine listening to this one. Matt K 4/5th less coffee next time and half a foot back from the mic. Love the energy but fuck half way through I’m ready to crash my car into the median to calm down

Thomas Carroll

Im amazed they ever posted them. I could see them posting one though.

Poppy Chulo

This is not the slop I wanted but it is the slop I deserve.

Adam Foster

Great podcast, just can’t get over how Karp pronounced “Armistice” haha

Clint Pelvis

lol yeah u just gotta live in one of the four cities they tour in jk jk truth is that chris forgot how 2 record live shows 🤷‍♂️

Michael Carroll

There’s just the St. Patrick’s Battalion. Matt did a low key racism against the Irish by calling it that

Isaac Jones

I'm fine with it but im heartbroken that they probably did the new Dreher article live when we NEEDED to get that ep to the general public

Doug Cartel

FoR aLl iNtEnSiVe PuRpOsEs

etienne

hey did anyone record the live shows? like with a portable recorder?

Doug Cartel

fuck, "hero of many bottles" is a really good pun even if I dont wanna shit on alcoholics

Brendan A. MacWade

Ah the new York venue tradition of having the doors open time as the show time. It's all an effort to sell more alcohol.

Budget Hireling

Ah, my favorite series the Intoxicated Yesteryears.

Valerie

It's probably because they started including a lot of visual jokes which didn't translate to a podcast format.

TangiePower

I liked when Chris would do a mashup of a few segments from tour - allowing them to hold back some exclusive shit for the ticket holders but also giving us some slop too.

etienne

chris told me here that if I want to listen to hell of presidents I can go on youtube which like. okay you don't have your masters. great job. Anyways I still like chris but he dropped the ball here

J.P. McD.

When Stitcher goes under, the greatest history content of all time will be lost, like tears in rain.

John Erganian

Trying to get rid of 2 tix. Free! In the orchestra section! first dot last @gmail

David Andrews

Absolutely fantastic episode. Inebriated Past series is my favorite.

Fernando

I don’t know if they get to that point but it would be interesting to hear their views on that.

Jackson Ehlert

Anyone know if there is a chapo reading list out there of books they’ve recommended?

Jack Hughes

There is one of Matt’s cushvlog recommends on Goodreads!

Bang Your Head (Metal Health Will Drive You Mad) ...

Cyclops giraffe

Is there any connection to the disappearance of the American hobo and our policy against Mexico and migrant workers?

AbeLinkin

Matt ain’t large no more. Lookin pretty dapper on the heidecker office hours

Broadway Joe

McClellan was in the Mexican War on Scott’s staff with RE Lee, Joe Johnston, and PGT Beauregard. He was part of the West Point Class of 1846, which was the last one to graduate in time to participate in the war.

chetan kadodwala

They always post one of the live shows on Patreon.

etienne

not anymore!

Dang

Matt K clearly knows what he's talking about but he needs to bring a script or be more tightly interviewed / fed events to comment on next time, in my humble opinion. Hard to follow his stream of facts at times.

David

Holy fuck this is so goddamn boring. Fuck off with these things, just do real episodes ffs

Dang

Yeah I know that's the premise but drunk people following a script can be good content too lol

the ayatollah of rocknrolla

not everything has to be for you david. if you dont like good content then you are free to not listen

Daffy

'the script' in podcasting is like the 'just read the slides' of presentations. If everything you're going to say is already written out, why am I listening to it? Except for specific cases like stage and screen, scripts are always rewritten or ignored. Scripted conversations are fake and boring and I can always tell when I'm listening to a podcast that still uses them.

Daffy

I think these are great. History is a weapon. Some of you grey wolves have very limp wrists. Do some training.

Dang

Congratulations on showing how little you know about how 90% of podcasts are produced. Obviously there is plenty of freeform discussion, but you think your favorite history podcasts aren't following a general outline or script to make sure they stay on track? Even TV re-watch podcasts follow scripts; grow up

etienne

go listen to NPR or dan carlin or slow burn or something

etienne

I took a count of episodes not long ago over a 3-month span and about a half to 2/3rd eps are "dry boys read the news paper", the rest was evenly distributed between Movie Mindsets, Live Eps, and eps where the dry boys are joined by a guest, either for the entire ep, or for just a segment, and most of *those* are mostly just current event talks and yet people are always whining when they're not just doing a dry boys news paper ep. At some point if you want to know what's today's politics twitter drama you can just go on twitter.

Dang

Listen to these nuts you anime loving bitch

DI

Loved this! More on Hidalgo treaty!

markers

Just quit paying for it then

Justin

Oh no... I remember when I got corrected on this one, and I was 17....

MJ Harris

If you touch the 2 little verticle rectangles on your screen, the episode will magically stop and you will be free to fuck off forever

teacup

I see a comment like this on almost every episode these days lol. They're releasing more stuff than ever, sorry you don't like some of their segments...

Budget Hireling

Guys, I found the dipshit who thinks they're the only member of the audience. Yknow what's boring? Reading your stupid ass comment on my favorite segment. Fuck off.

CT

Jesus effing Christ, I REALLY struggled to get thru this due to the horrid state of Karp’s audio track. Homey needs to take a class in microphone techniques.

George Lochinski

No youtube ripped onto mp3 tech in web 3.0? (Also ep 12 is unavailable for me at least)

BureaucracyNow

Seems like Karp might have been cool at some point but damn all academics gotta be citing their sources in the most annoying ways “I wrote a dissertation on whatever the fuck” “I just reviewed a book about blah blah blah.” Just say the underlying fact, skip the clout check.

chris dray

Honestly found this one kinda hard to follow. The conversation w/ Karp was good, but the thing I'm really into the Inebriated Pasts for are the historical stories, and this one was kinda all over the place

Jordan Thompson

i just listened to this again and im pretty sure he says it the right way? around 24mins

Doug Cartel

Yeah I'm just getting bent out of shape over irrelevant things, I'm too much of a nerd like that
