Laurel

Bonus slop!

Unai Lopez

Definitely not first!

Isaac Jones

2 hours of Movie Mindset? What a perfect way to recover from a post International Women's Day hangover!

g$

lex g pls

Christian Johnson

Hey Fap, Hell on Earth eps drop at 6:00 AM Chicago time on Wednesdays, be awake & alert so you can 🥇, I'll relinquish the 👑

Bryan Jennings

Movie Mindset going from a wild frontier faith to a formally codified doctrine via a series - a natural continuation from Hell on Earth.

Boxcar Neil

Finally! Bringing that movie magic to the masses. Get out of here with those cousin lovers during the 30 Years War. I want some glitz and glamor with my content slop.

danny

lets fucking go

Christian Johnson

Inbreeding vs. Child Eating Hollywood pedophiles, that's a tough call

Horse

A deadly team, hyped for this

Seymour Butz

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in

Maddy

Just hook it to my veins!!

Warbs

Hesse and Will movie ep! I cannot wait.

Dennis

Gotta be One of the worst years in movies in a long time

J. A.

I think I'm turning Japanese

Josh O'Shields

Happy to hear from Hesse herself after hearing about her in Hell on Earth

Drew McGill

I love how we have two people who don’t watch movies or really follow the Oscar race tell us about the Oscar’s 😂 I love Chapo but y’all are so wrong for god topic.

Saga

I personally loved Everything Everywhere, but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea. I do, however, take issue with it being compared to Rick and Morty.

Bloberis SH

do drugs the way they were meant to be done: as a crime

Don Tickles

Let's all go to the movies

WL

There's a character named SPRITE

Steeeeve

Either be thankful you get to be a less tedious person from now on, or go all-in and take up heroin.

EaZy E

I just started listening to Seeking Derangements again. Awesome.

Hugo

Everything everywhere all at once is pretty terrible

The Etymology of Nonsense

To be fair, there's virtually no distinguishing differences between those two, Dr Strange 2, or the upcoming Flash movie.

WL

its literally rick and morty, from the multiverse shit to the hella random humour

Joe Bowden

Every Indian and Pakistani person I bring up RRR to say it’s pretty fascist. I mean I enjoyed watching it but I think will doesn’t get what’s going on with the politics of the film

Thomas Carroll

You guys talked about like 40 movies and I can't remember any of them. How do you find time to watch all these movies???

Saga

There's plenty of films that have tackled the concept of the multiverse without being compared to Rick and Morty. Plus I feel that the absurdism in Everything served a bigger purpose to the moral of the story - stop taking life so seriously and enjoy each moment as it comes (open your third "googly" eye, as it were). Whereas Rick and Morty seems to be absurdist for the sake of it, or shock value. Just my opinion though.

Thomas Carroll

Can I say something? I really enjoyed this episode

brodie

So hype to become aligned with the movie mindset.

Thomas Carroll

I literally have to listen to this entire ep again bc I didn't write down anything and I really want to see some of these. FAk

Luis Zamarripa

I know next to nothing of Indian/Pakistani politics outside of realizing that Modi/BJP/RSS are bad and I could tell from the very first minutes that the movie would have an intense reactionary and nationalist vibe. Seeing both RRR and Top Gun receive immense praise in the same year makes me feel like I’m living the “Tomorrow Belongs to Me” scene from Cabaret

Trew Dhiel

Wish Grogg Turkington "the oscer doctor" could have made it.

nadia

i couldn’t be happier about this

Ashe

I love how much Will loves movies lmao

T

"What a podcast!" -Al Pacino

Luis Zamarripa

I went from simply being annoyed by the film to outright hating it when they paid homage to Wong Kar Wai. Why invite comparisons to one of the masters of cinema unless you have the talent/creativity to back it up?

J.P. McD.

I think it’s fine/good, but people being annoying about it, and the cast/crew’s “representation” manipulations for clout in the media definitely ranks it down towards terrible

J.P. McD.

You watch a movie at night instead of scrolling Twitter or playing 2 hours of video games or watching garbage prestige TV

Isaac Jones

Like everybody else, sad to see you guys snub Decision to Leave, been really disappointed in how little love that movie has gotten

Stanlej

I’m gay no wait this is cha

parker

Haven't watched either but holy shit. If liberals were at fucking all honest with themselves modi would be enemy number one enemy of democracy everywhere. I generally refrain from calls for violence because that's a path of making any foreigner an enemy no matter who it is. But holy shit he is legitimately one of the most evil men in the world rn and he was literally praised endlessly by the daily show. I know John wouldn't have done that but holy shit liberals as a group are a plague.

parker

Okay but that's literally the lifestyle of will.

Jesse

You're a fucking dork, Steve.

James Blackmon

Loved it. Looking forward to future episodes.

Isaac

Move over Siskel n Ebert 👏

TubiRocks

Of course horror is ignored around Oscar season, so it was nice to hear Barbarian come up. I also quite liked Australia's Sissy, and think you might as well.

Poppy Chulo

This was a political analysis podcast at one point, I remember because that's why I subscribed.

VAN Fan

Are you brain damaged

Sinkpiss

Another Oscars pity award: Dennis Hopper for Hoosiers the year after Blue Velvet

VAN Fan

Did you actually watch the movie?

Marissa Page

this mini-series is going to be amazing... loved this ep, thank you Will & Hesse!

Gurjot

This is what it's all about. Let's fucking go!!

Oatmeal

Hesse rocks so much, so excited for this

Drew McGill

How so? In the first couple films they examine that lately state they didn’t watch or only watched a few mins of and then gave their takes lmao. I’m not through the whole episode yet but it’s pretty ridiculous from what I’ve heard so far.

Sir Kev The Perv

I m looking forward to Movie Mindset but I would also love more Time for my stories or This is SUS. Specifically something focusing on political shows like the Good Fight or Scandal.

The Etymology of Nonsense

Yes, I watched the movie. And while it isn't necessarily as deep or intellectual as Rick and Morty, no one can argue it isn't more Asian.

J Lit

Lol Chris finally talked will into making this. Now we just need a new Felix series

Jack

Matt got his history pod, Will his Movie pod, now its finally time for Felix's podcast about the 2016 East Coast Online Media Landscape

JC

paul schrader ep pls thank you ❤️

nomorepls

Baz Luhrmann movies are the cinematic equivalent of those baby color shapes videos

shinyfailure

Someone doesn’t understand true movie mindset

Cameron

Love this

Cameron

They’re podcasters they don’t do much

BAAAAAARNES

I go the Oscar fever, hope you got it too

Poppy Chulo

Check YouTube, will did a noaul schrader episode on another movie podcast and it was pretty good. Just type "will menaker discusses Paul Schrader"

THEKILLERWHALE

I HAVE MOVIE MINDSETTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MTH

Was excited to hear what you all thought of All Quiet, I was surprisingly moved by it, and I usually don’t about war movies. Disappointed neither saw it. My fave of the year measured by emotional response

MTH

Of course, I was also moved by the last episode of Black Adder.

Matthew

love this shit can’t wait for more 🫡

Robert Cullimore

Loving some of these recommendations, really enjoyed the menu and smile

Tyler Barton

Thank GOD for Hesse, because I was intrigued by Expedition Content when it came up on a previous episode (when chapo was dragging AO Scott). I remember feeling disappointed that it was flatly judged as being drivel. Vindicated by today's episode!

Andrew

Where's the line between patriotism and nationalism?

HamDrawn

Oh hell yeah, menaker mindset edibles need to hit the market asap. Cannabis industry get on it.

Daniela

when’s the babylon ep

Brian Betz

As I understand it, with the best international feature, each country decides what the one movie they’ll send to represent them is, not the studios or the academy. So India apparently didn’t want to submit RRR

Eclectic Beast

Will and Hesse need an even bigger movie nerd on their podcast. They could have tied Sarah Polley’s previous film “Take this Waltz” where Michelle Williams cheats on Seth Rogen to The Fabelmans, where Michelle Williams cheats with Seth Rogen.

Ozzie

Osc osc osc Oscar fever!

Kirstwb

so happy about this series! great ep

Tristan Clark

Pumped to watch along and listen to the series!

Phli_phlam

Who is the ghoul on the episode art

fasd asdfa

I’m instantly in for anything with Hesse

Ben C

he almost called her Tesla lol

Taylor Borie

I was just about to comment that!!! Will has become Jacques-pilled

Village Wolf

Please do an episode on Babylon!

Ozzie

Mad God was phenomenal. Absolute snub for best animated feature

Damen Irving

The idea Spielberg made a movie that says movies are made by perverts for perverts is incredible

Max Cool

Will, thank you for mentioning Crimes of the future, it’s mention at the end was much appreciated

Max Cool

Sorry I’m really high so that comment was redundant

ADIFT

Two many hosts, not enough personality. I'll take cushvlog over this.

ToddUmptious

Hey Guys! Iiiit's Movie Time!

Jake Zydek

Western front is the only one I saw, and it was great. And Weimar haircuts rock.

My Name

Hesse here to take over and purge the patreon 🙌

Cory Gipson

Describing Babylon as the most “bozo mode” movie is incredibly apt, I haven’t been able to put my finger on it until now.

Garrett Robinson

EVERYONE PLEASE WATCH RRR OR AT LEAST GOOGLE RRR DANCE SCENE. Thanks

T

Erm... that's Billy Crystal and I'm calling the ADL.

Damen Irving

Super looking forward to what you guys do in October. A chapo-curated horror marathon sounds amazing

Steeeeve

There isn't one hope this helps

T

Animation is the worst, most corrupt category at the Oscars. Disney wins every time.

Jaime Christley

Hong Chau’s 4ish minutes in her POKER FACE episode are much more worthwhile than anything in or concerning THE WHALE. She’s also arguably the best part of Alexander Payne’s underrated DOWNSIZING.

Luis Zamarripa

She was incredible in The Menu. Her delivery of “Tortillas Deliciosas” was pure gold

Luis Zamarripa

“How does one hate a country, or love one?... I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply? What is the love of one's country; is it hate of one's uncountry? Then it's not a good thing.” - Ursula Le Guin

Jaime Christley

yeah, it's like.... I don't necessarily need my favorite actors to be able to do everything (a ton of my faves have limited "range" and don't "disappear into the role" etc), but I also think she can kinda do everything?

Alex Payne

Honestly so stoked for this series

Crosley Querin

True Willheads taking the dub. Matt and Felixcels left seething. Let's fucking go.

Karlo

No Will the important part about the third act in Triangle of Sadness is that that luxury hotel is already on the island

James Wallace

Doing yourselves a disservice not watching Puss in Boots. It's highly entertaining

Benjamin O Levine

Can’t believe chapos just copying the E1 episode she was on only real smh

zach

this is so good

Poppy Chulo

Tar is a film for people who find watching flies fuck too action packed.

J.P. McD.

Saw all the BP noms that year and it was by far my worst

Percle

Yeah movies that require object permanence are for soyboys, they should just give best picture to a laser pointer.

Jake Bolton

Y'all are way off. Triangle of Sadness was fantastic, hilarious satire. I reveled in watching all those wealthy people shitting and vomiting all over themselves. Loved the role reversal on the island. Also, Tar was boring as shit and Will is projecting way more meaning than is warranted. And Elvis was awful.

Kamran Husain

barbarian was the best picture of the year prove me wrong

Poppy Chulo

"Oh no someone didn't like my overrated Oscar bait borefest better shift into hyperbole like the douchebag hipster I am!"

Percle

you seem like someone who knows a thing or two about personality

Gordon Schmidt

Smiling at all the people who didn't think Tar was amazing. There's so much to chew on in that movie. It deserves Best Picture just for that scene where she's jogging in the park and hears screaming, but can't find the source. It's a dry comedy and a horror film. You're missing out and you may never know why. It's kind of sad...

Isaac Jones

Stephanie Hsu's character is literally just Evil Morty though?

Isaac Jones

Yeah there's obviously awful nationalist shit all over it, but that doesn't make it any less of a slapper

Poppy Chulo

Being an effette condescending fuckstick is not a substitute for a personality.

Isaac Jones

Im typically at 3-4 a week. I watch a movie on Monday night, a movie on Thursday or Friday night, one Saturday morning and one Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I just cut down on video games and Twitter primarily

Isaac Jones

All Quiet is a gorgeous looking and brilliantly presented movie with tragically little to say beyond the rote "war is hell!" drudgery. The book is far more effective with a much better message about the effect on the German soldiers and the way they were incapable of reintegrating into society, how they were lauded as heroes upon returning home but knew they weren't.

Isaac Jones

Please tell me what other movies you hated, I need recommendations for what's good

leah

he was right to praise kirsten's performance!!!!

Caesaro

“Details inside” where?

DP

Folks, unfortunately, this sucks

Bobi Jon-son Kenobi

Thank you for Chris for shouting out Three Thousand Years (and Northman, of course). It’s a sweet romance twinged with tragedy and plenty of weirdness; it’s also a very aesthetically pleasing movie. Basically no one saw it in theaters, so it’s nice to hear it receive some recognition

Axel H.

It’s been a while since I’ve watched movies regularly (I used to watch more when I was younger but just haven’t seen many in the past several years), but Tar made me want to start watching movies again. Best movie I’ve seen in a long time.

Dan

Omg, Birdman is one of the worst movies that I've ever seen; very recent-filmschool-grad.

Arthur G. Pym

Lexg go on Movie Mindset podcast

James Murray

Hesse is a vapid, giggling, uninteresting mess who adds next to nothing in terms of insight despite talking half of the time. Holy shit.

Poppy Chulo

Everything everywhere all at once became exhausting by the third act. It's overrated, like on the same level as Parasite.

YukiNukem64x

Decided to pay this month's sub just to tell you you're wrong and you're a loser.

Simon

Disagree and its ok to subjectively not like something and to accept that there are things in the world which aren't for you, instead of developing an objective explanation of why you are right

Shartk

Chapo media empire expansion pack slays 💚

Post Void

Never heard of those last couple mentioned. RRR and Mad God seems absolutely amazing.

Walking Bones

Love hearing from Hesse, hope we get more of her on Movie Mindset

Null_null

The Hasan Minaj Celeb Jeopardy episode is so satisfying if you wanna see an unfunny loser eat shit in a competition designed to be easier than Kids Jeopardy. And I’m not suggesting that winning that competition is any indicator of high intelligence, but losing in the way in which he did is truly telling.

Null_null

Re Tar. Was the film trying to convey that she was a dogshit composer? I got that impression from those quiet moments in her studio. And when she plays for that cellist she wants to bang and the cellist is condescendingly like “oh yeah this is so good.” Reminded me of Griffin Mill and the How to Write a Screenplay in 21 Days book he keeps in his desk.

J Vladcliff

I am here for Movie Mindset, looks like I will be keeping my subscription after Hell on Earth

Daniel

Every dollar I’ve spent on this podcast has been worth it for the development of the Menaker Movie Mindset™️™️ philosophy

what_an_answer

The whale is just the wrestler again but worse. But brendan was good at least

etienne

I love when darron aronofsky makes a movie that's like "what if a guy was *insanely* cringe"

MG

I liked All Quiet. It had a good soundtrack and the german actors were good. It was a nice update. Not best picture though.

Of course

Like the NYTimes converting itself from a newspaper into specialized, topical newsletters... Chapo is making a similar brand-leveraging move with Hell on Earth and Movie Mindset.

Kyle Smyth

All I can say is we're only a few years into the 'multiverse' trend and I already wish I could kill it with a hammer. I pray EEAAO doesn't win just so we can be done with that idea before they use it as a pretext to do the most obnoxious franchise crossover movies of all time

James Browning

Excellent episode! Mad God respek! Looking forward to the new series. Following up Beer George with some movies.

Anthony Hoffman

It’s such an unfunny, cringey little shit. He doubled down during his Jimmy Fallon appearance saying he was trying to make the show “fun” and we should all shut up because we’re “geriatric.”

Robert Calcagno

If I have to do one correction with Tár, which I thought was phenomenal, you DO actually see a student at the top of the auditorium during the single take shot.

Null_null

Lots of people try to make the game fun during the celeb tournament. Actual non-celeb contestants will even try to make Jeopardy fun during meaningful games. Minaj's antics stood out because they were so incredibly annoying, painfully unfunny, and completely unearned (he was losing badly). He is one of the most pretentious, pompous assholes going right now.

Dany

Countries nominate Best Foreign Film. Not the academy.

Andrew M

which anime is The Whale based off of

MTH

Interesting review, I see what you mean.

Poppy Chulo

In the radio and podcast world they're called "holes". Just voids that suck up time and quality.

Poppy Chulo

Not really, she/he didn't add anything to the podcast. Menaker and Christman would be a better combo.

MATT TRIANO

SIMON: I don't agree with his opinion but who cares, he didn't say it was objectively correct. He just stated his OPINION. Now you've done the same. See how neither has more weight than the other?

J P 3

Triangle of Sadness benefits from an intermission between the second and third acts, but it's not a bad movie. I didn't think it was laugh out loud funny, but it doesn't suck either. The action in Östlund's movies also tends to be driven more by plot and theme than by characters, which is what it is.

Cleo

I saw Tár in a completely empty theater ripped out of my mind best movie experience of my life

Movie Donkey

Fuck you for not liking Triangle of Sadness, Will

YukiNukem64x

Dunno, heard them on a bunch of other podcasts and they were hilarious. Didn't listen to this ep because the subject matter doesn't really interest me.

John Leavitt

The reaction to ToS by some cultural creators is cause the movie points directly to them and says you are also the problem no matter how dark and ridiculous you think the rich are. Also Spielberg’s movies are sexless cause he’s deeply closeted. I’m not sure which closet but he has big weird closet vibes. Deeply square.

Dick Van Sexel

I took my kids to see a lot of movies aimed at their age group this year. Puss in boots was a pleasant surprise, and worth a watch . They loved jaws in imax; my daughter is still mad quint dies.lol

Movie Donkey

Have you see The Square? There’s some great chimp work in it from Terry Notary

J.P. McD.

But you did the moron douchebag hyperbole thing first? Strange to go on the attack as if you have some moral high ground.

J.P. McD.

Guessing you saw about 3 movies last year and 8 total horror movies released in the last decade?

Poppy Chulo

Yes, calling a movie boring is the same as telling someone they can only be fascinated by laser pointers. You fucking idiot.

Kamran Husain

it was the first movie i have ever seen i may have to try another sometime

Poppy Chulo

I can't take a guy who looks like he's seasoned at squeegeeing loads off his face seriously. You look soft as baby shit.

T

The Spielberg closet isn't the male closet but the young closet, allegedly. As Matt says, Temple of Doom is Spielberg's most autobiographical movie.

T

Episode 3 of Golden Wind.

Patrick Taffe

Great, now I'm going to have "i lobe my monshtairs" rent free in my head until the day i die, thanks Will

SH

It’s insane Aftersun didn’t get more nominations tbh.

Aidan

What do people think about the scene in Tar where she’s alone trying to compose and you briefly see a young woman in standing her apartment in the background of a shot? Always confused me

Jordan Brewer

Nomadland I saw for the first time a few months ago and it was just so boring. It’s the most plain the friends we made along the way movie. I pray she settled down with David Strathairn at the end cuz she was gonna off someone or drive the RV off a cliff

Sam

Amazing episode 0. I cannot wait for the rest of the episodes (and I cannot wait for you two to tear into Babylon it was so awful)

J.P. McD.

It’s the ghost of the suicide girl

J.P. McD.

I gave it 3/5 when I watched it. Was annoyed that all “elevated horror” movies are just “my 2016 Twitter feed”. It was fun and entertaining a lot of the time though.

James Murray

I've previously enjoyed episodes with the Seeking Derangement folks but this was just a bad outing. Was I a little harsh? Yes. Did Hesse giggle throughout every sentence, and say "it was like, so crazy" about 50 times? Yes. Chapo sets a high bar for intellectual stimulation.

Axel H.

I saw Dr. Harry posting, so I knew it was going to be complete dogshit. You didn't just call the movie boring, you self-unaware shitstain. You insulted people who do like it and then got incensed that anyone would respond likewise. Read your own moronic words.

Maxkrause817

I HATE this guest, horrible takes, what a strawberry

Jim McKenna

I agree. This trope has to die a hard death. I will buy and ship the hammer to you.

Jim McKenna

Such a good episode. It helps so much that I love to listen to Will and Hesse talk. Both have such a clean clear style that is so pleasing.

foxy

i hate movies

Poppy Chulo

Sure, you could take that as an insult (clearly a joke) but you would have to be easily outraged which fits the bill for you. You posted incessantly the other day policing the comments on another episode like a completely unhinged hysterical twat. You hand wringing cluster b personality having piece of human garbage.

Isaac Jones

Yes, everybody else also snubbed Decision to Leave

Son of El Topo

Why is Will's Elvis impersonation exactly the same as his Stallone impression?

Son of El Topo

Imagine counting the dildo fight as a strike against a movie.

Axel H.

I think I like what that other person said to you: drown yourself in a vat of rancid shit. All you do is post garbage and then get extremely angry when anyone doesn’t like your “jokes”. Fuck off and die.

Poppy Chulo

lol take a look at yourself. You were all over the other episode saying vile things to other chapo fans for nothing. You self righteous cunt.

Casey

Lost respect for Hesse for liking so many things in the terrible Triangle of Sadness

Sam Schick

I think I’ll watch Tar again and look for that Mulholland Drive take, I thought it was good but I took it more as a movie for people who love their New Yorker tote and want to feel dangerous. Also yeah liberal guilt is ruining the fun but there is just a lot of entertainment in watching people encounter difficulties on their 10,000 vacations.

Axel H.

I was calling out transphobic BS and I never said anything vile to anyone who wasn't already saying vile shit themselves, you miserable closet case. You fly off the handle whenever you are called out on your shit. You're probably physically abusive in real life.

Michael Ouderkirk

It's ridiculous how much better she was than anyone else in that movie

danny

i just teared up at the name jenny the donkey damn

Bernard Keenan

Inish Erin is Irish for island of Ireland. He's out of his lane here too. The film is fucking awful

wolfgang

yeah ostlund is really good, but i think a lot of people have a hard time with his style of satire. maybe it’s too abstract and uncomfortable. I also think force majeure and the square were a more subtle with their protagonists, and generally better films.

Rakish Tilt 🎩

You forgot to mention Sarah Polley's best film: The Sweet Hereafter

Luke Witherell

Man, some of this was very fun and funny, and some of it was legit the worst movie criticism I've ever heard

Casey Kiesling

Glad to here them dunking on Nomadland, a dreary boring film with a ten minute advertisement for Amazon jammed in the middle of it. Would have liked to here some love for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, The Menu, and Puss in Boots, which all slapped.

Axel H.

I liked ToS alright, though I think I've seen enough vomiting in film for a lifetime. Lol. Though now I can't wait to check out The Square.

Poppy Chulo

It's charming in the first act, gets progressively worse in the second act, and by the third act you'll be exhausted.

Sam McManus

I don't really buy the "it was all a dream" thing. To me, the reason it feels so unreal toward the end is because she's depersonalizing. Her whole identity is a projection made possible by the work and assent of people "below" her, so when she pushed her privilege too far and that bottom falls out, she loses touch with basically everything and everyone around her. Honestly I'm surprised Marxists haven't taken more ownership of it, it's a pretty withering look at "rugged capitalists" who jerk themselves off over their intelligence and authority while high society applauds like the Victorians watching Alex fuck at the end of A Clockwork Orange but would completely collapse if their workers walked off the job.

Sam McManus

I think the better part of Tar's talent is an emperor's new clothes kind of deal. Her book sucks, and most of what she says in eg the classroom scene is just "neither a borrower nor a lender be" sophist nonsense that sounds smart but doesn't ultimately mean much. Like when she's trying to tell the orchestra how she wants them to play, her wife/kapellmeister has to stand up and actually explain what she's trying to get at. If nothing else, a conductor without an orchestra is just some dickhead waving their arms around

J.P. McD.

wolfgang with the classic “this movie is too smart and artistic (‘abstract and uncomfortable’) for you” defense

J.P. McD.

you don’t have to find some moral or “objective” justification for why somebody might incorrectly dislike a movie. It’s ok if you like it and they don’t.

Axel H.

Yeah “too smart” doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. If anything it was a bit on the nose. I still liked it. But it was kind of hammering in the point by the end.

Matt Boi

Too many haters in the comments, you will be against the wall when the movie heads take control 🔫

Sam Schick

This is pretty close to my original reading of it, I think an individual’s social strata and material conditions and their conception of where they fall in the spectrum of “middle class or artistic class” obviously color how they identify with the hero of the story. I think it’s great commentary on how dispensable an individual is to the commercial mechanisms of any industry, especially one held dear by elites as art and culture. The final act seemed to just highlight how most of us are either deluding ourselves of our working class origins or the reality of how precarious our constructed reality is at hiding our working class existence. Her banishment to an emerging nation only seems to highlight how the delusion is a particularly American construction and how much elites are disconnecting from the material conditions of most of the population of the world, even as the tentacles of capitalism are weaving into other nations like the Philippines through exports like video games, her punishment is to be a second rate conductor and emissary of a watered down version of high brow culture.

Luke B

I may have missed it mentioned on the podcast, but I highly recommend “Decision To Leave” from director Park Chan-wook. Overlooked for best international feature at the very least.

Finn

Stoked for the movie miniseries!

Caitlyn Rae

Bones & All got snubbed on all fronts ☠️

Christopher Price

The South Korean academy is not a fan of Park for whatever reasons, so he doesn't get any support during awards season, despite his sterling career.

Poppy Chulo

I enjoyed Bones and All but it definitely isn't oscar material. I will say if Michael Stuhlbarg had been given a main role he could have been up as best actor. He stole the scene he was in.

Adam Outrage

Chapo continues having the worst movie opinions of all time.

Pete Bondurant

Get Will Sloan of the Important Cinema Club as well as Michael & Us on the show asap. He's got Oscar fever like you wouldn't believe! Fever of 107 degrees!!

etienne

wubba lubba dub damn

James Lloyd

Uh same theme song as Movies Vs. Capitalism ??

PJ Martinez

On the topic of fucked up Pinocchio movies, I can't recommend Roberto Benigni's Pinocchio from 2019 enough. It is one of the most horrifying movies I've ever seen and I loved it. What's especially fun is finding reviews from moms who put it on for their kids and usually turned it off around the time Pinocchio gets lynched.

MKatieUltra

Worth getting Shudder for

Kevin Kromenacker

Ngl, I was stoked to check out Will's recommendations that I hadn't seen until he mentioned that he liked Barbarian. Can't take his reccos seriously ever again

nwp

oh come on lmao. that movie is fun

nwp

Chapo sets a high bar for intellectual stimulation. LOL
