He might be the president of ALU, but he’s really only president of what amounts to a local. The legacy unions very clearly want nothing to do with Amazon - certainly not after the RWDSU’s toothless efforts in Bessemer. I’ve been union for almost 20 years as a Teamster (including as a salt and organizer) and now a Machinist. There is no ALU without him, he has no resources, let alone trained hands, for organizing. Keeping the ALU alive in pro-labor circles is the best he could do. Unless the Teamsters or UAW in particular want to help, ALU is cooked. The TDU only recently wrested national control from that cunt Hoffa, Jr.’s stay behinds and are up against decades of ossified bureaucracy. UAW got new militant labor leadership for the first time since ‘47. Taking on Amazon could radicalize their rank-and-file or, most likely, annihilate their fragile coalitions.

I've met the guy and attended a labor training panel he was on, I'm a rank and file organizer with a UE local. He focused exclusively on feeding the people and using the media as organizing tools. He likes to use the media, which is part of the fight. The progress among the rank and file isn't great and they don't have a contract yet at JFK8. Given the big national unions don't want to fight Amazon, him and the initial crop of ALU leaders came out of disgruntled Amazon middle management. Chris was a floor manager. Derrick was a floor manager. This is how they had networks of employees they knew to count on and call the walkout. Chris definitely is more media focused than contract focused, but I think he believes that's the best way to pressure Amazon to the bargaining table because the ALU don't have the juice to do so through rank and file organization (cough, because ALU is poorly organized because it's a brand new organization). I don't think he's gladhanding because he's purely out for personal gain, maybe a bit who doesn't like attention, but because the media is what he understands and he openly admits this union stuff is new to him. He's a nice guy, maybe just not the guy for this job, but not my place or knowhow to say who would be.
