Our friend and host of The Age of Napoleon podcast Everett Rummage returns to the show (after 700 episodes!) to discuss Ridley Scott’s new historical epic Napoleon. Was Napoleon really that sprung for Josephine? (yes) Did (x) from the movie really go down like that? (mostly no) Did getting blown up by a cannon ball suck? (god yes) We delve in to Napoleon the man, the movie, and the enduring resonance of the Napoleonic age. Plus, of course, a final round of kiss offs to the departed Dr. Kissinger.

S.E. Nyarady

the collab I've been waiting for

Erik

I was literally thinking earlier this week how cool it’d be to get Everett on Chapo for this movie. You know your audience 🐷

Blank

Ok it’s late, but coming home drunk on a fri night to new slop is also great

Aaron Hamil

Rip bozo rest in piss you won’t be missed

Dan

Love that Adam Tooze hated this movie so much he walked out theatre at the Austerlitz scene.

Joe

Ev!!!!!! Let’s goooooooo

pelicans123

Fuck yeah he’s back, sorry he had to watch the movie though

bruce

No Matt for this fuckin blows man

Mike Loudin

Say what you want about Kissenger, but we can at least all agree, he sure is dead lol

Rahman

I miss kissenger already 😢😕

Evan Scott

Was getting worried about Matt for a minute, glad things are okay

Isaac Jones

I cry real tears that Matt isn't here for this. We need our king here for this, it's not fair, fuck you god, godspeed to our large boy

ploob

Compwamise is the essence of diplomacy, and diplomacy is the cornastone of love.

RG13

Kissinger died. He can sleep now. He wins.

NYCM&AHole

Lots of people missed him. That’s how he lived to be 100. But he never went through Dallas in an open top limo

Natalie

I'm thankful I saw Wills letterboxd review earlier so I know I agree already before going in

Untold Suffering

*pounding knife and fork on table* Inebriated past! Inebriated past!

Demented Avenger

I always envisioned Kissinger and Göbbels would room together in Hell. Both were thoroughly evil Germans who were uglier inside than their ugly exteriors, but both were getting primo pussy. After the initial insults between a Jew and a Nazi, they'd try to one-up each other by bragging who had the most kills then whether Jill St. John or Lida Baarova was hotter and better in the sack.

RG13

Kissinger once said to Napoleons wife, “ Don’t wash, I’m on my way home.”

Michael S. Judge

He already reviewed it in 3 words. Tactical Jerry Orbach.

tyler

what a stinker of a film

K H

Oh perfect. Just in time to listen to while I get hypno bimbofied at the dungeon today.

K H

Crazy. I always envisioned them screaming.

K H

Perhaps the lifeforce transferenxe spell worked. Of course he is so large, it may not have been enough even with Rosalyn Carter, who I hit on accident. I swear I aimed for Jimmy.

K H

Another demon escapes earthly justice. God can only hold them so long for us.

Tim Mullen

I literally thought earlier this week that they’d have Everett on this week I should play the slots

Sheila Mydick

Can someone explain Will’s hatred of Ridley Scott? I’m not a big fan, but I’d swear by Alien and Blade Runner to anyone I know who hasn’t seen those movies. My Dad took me to Robin Hood and Prometheus, which were fun at the time. Gladiator was fun (haven’t seen since I was a teen) and The Martian was boring (have not rewatched since I was in high school). Is it Black Hawk Down? I haven’t seen that since middle school but if I recall correctly the politics were horrifying.

William

Ayy most of europe’s generals were trash, but Russia did produce two good ones, suvorov and kutuzov. I think I remember Ev talking about an archduke Charles from Austria being decent too

Horseloverfat

Crazy that everything was so gray in the olden times. Love learning from history

Eon Gattignolo

yeah he isn't chilling or talking trivia in my daydreams

Yarblockos

The coronation scene in the trailer convinced me to never watch this ever.

Mats Jonathan Siekmann

Man, I actually loved the movie. It’s great once you accept it’s a Lanthimos style dry comedy

Sky

LETS FUCKING GOOOOO

Tvvvv

I’d love to hear you guys talk about the 2002 miniseries with Malcovich and Isabella Rosalini

Ozzie

Tony > Ridley

David Atkins

Chris, beautiful work slipping the Venture Bros in there. ✌️

Eric Olson

There's a big fat Wisconsinite hole in this episode

Jake Zydek

How Jokerfied was Napoleon?

Jim

I think Eric Idle may have sang a song once upon a time for you…

Pædiekeix

I don’t hear enough people talking about what a great name Everett Rummage is

Jessica S

I was thinking the same thing!

Jim Knapp

Do you have any idea that you released this episode at the same time as Dracula Flow 4?????

Alexandr

I think it's just that he's not a particularly skilled director but he dips his toes into all these different genres, never specializing to competence in any one.

Poppy Chulo

It's strange because Ridley Scott has way more bangers in his filmography than Tony Scott.

Poppy Chulo

He made two of the greatest sci-fi film of all time back to back.

Poppy Chulo

The film was good, I don't watch movies based on history expecting complete accuracy, but they should serve as a point of interest for people to look into the actual historical events and get the full story.

William Evans

Audibly sighed when Felix said he didn’t watch the movie. And yeah no Matt on this one… sad. Ohhhhh wellllll.

will michel

a cheeky toss, an everett rummage

D M

I think the gripe is that he made a couple great films and alot of average ones but gets praised as one of the best. They don't really HATE him its justa thing now... I really liked the Raised by Wolves sci fi series he was executive producer of but only actually directed a few episodes. You can see his influence in the design of the world and his obsession with androids but i think he was mostly the money behind Aaron Guzikowskis baby. It only got 2 seasons though and we never got the rest of the story. Apparently 5seasons were written, hopefully it gets picked up by some other streaming service if you all go get obsessed with it like me and demand satisfaction

AbeLinkin

Why does Ridley Scott insist on the blue-grey tint in all his more recent movies? It makes me irrationally upset.

bangoduck

it's like the yellow Mexico tint from Breaking Bad but for Europe.

Jack Ross

Probably will be a while yet. He probably has some recovery, especially if it was neurological.

toms patreon page

Let’s not forget Matt had only just started his planned paternal leave before the deep state shot him with a heart attack gun. Indeed our boy must Recover, but now he must also Nurture. All in good time and as much time. We can only wish him and his well <3

Tom

Great episode. Also just finished the episode on Chapo. I wish you had given your opinion on Andrew Roberts when it was brought up. I enjoyed his Napoleon book and was shocked by his Op Ed last week.

Nathan TC

Did anyone else's audio go full digital distorted after listening for a while? Didn't twice for me and I had to reload the page to clear it. Super weird!

Steeeeve

When ur name is everett rummage they make you do history podcasts. It's the law. What else is a guy with that name gonna do

Will Menaker

My sincere reply is that post-Blade Runner his output is almost all OK to actively bad in my opinion. I'm a hater because his evident talents are mostly put towards movies that I find to be tedious slogs. Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time. The Duelists is an astonishing movie. I hate because I expect better and given the sum total of his career his one or two untouchable masterpieces don't give him a pass on a decades long run of movies that possess the promise of something like his first three movies, but all arrive as cynical, leaden and punishing ordeals.

Mark Schneider

Fun fact-- the cannonball in Foucault's pendulum that proved that Copernicus was correct viz Heliocentrism weighed 62 lbs.

BigBoto

People get mad at Felix for not engaging with the literature, but I trust him to think relatively soundly about Napoleon from a clean slate

AbeLinkin

But he also used it in Prometheus and some other non-euro movie. It’s quite the lame, dulling signature feature

Daniel Harris

Ridley Scott is a god and I will accept no slander

backcheck

real stancilism has never been tried

Kevin Essington

Good pod! Time to go play Age of Empires III.

Will

You see it was really funny when felix proclaimed that he didnt see the movie, because the focus of this episode was the movie!!! 😂😂😂💀💀💀👌👌👌

BTULTRA

it really is crazy how wide Ridley Scott’s hit to miss ratio is.

HuffingGasInTheShed

Felix- if Blinken had been playing jazz it still would have been a pathetic ruling class asshole trying to channel black American authenticity, but it would have taken him 15 years longer to learn to play the guitar licks

Doug Cartel

Felix saw Lowenaffchen's post and saw red Jk jk

Aaron Enold

This episode is gonna make me really miss Matt. I have been waiting to hear him talk about this movie since I saw the first preview

Barnabas

Was annoyed for a second but you gotta respect the incredible level of phoning it in

Tim O'

Tony was supposed to direct Man of Steel, but committed suicide the year before it came out. We're in the bad timeline.

K U

Interesting that Everett brings up Stalin, since the more I read about him, the more it's clear to me that he's the Napoleon of the 20th century. However, his military talents were mediocre, his political acumen was certainly genius level.

Maicol

Garbage collector, antique salesman, taxidermist

Bobi Jon-son Kenobi

Ridley had a bad-ass space pterodactyl named after him. Tony had a mascot for a lousy cereal named after him. I think we know who the true superior Scott brother is

Dylan Gutridge

Have been revisiting every episode of Hell of Presidents as well. My absolute favorite mini so far, brilliant.

Bob J

Had to revise my 'no matt no listen' policy for obvious reasons. That said my 'no felix no notice' policy is vindicated more each week.

Dyyyyylan

Felix dabbing on the listeners

philfinn

I thought the battle of Friedland was the moral quandry of deciding whether or not to accept a blow job from an Israeli prostitute

Matthew Krueger

You're right of course. I still thought it made me an asshole that it ruined the joke for me.

Tim O'

YELDIR WAS I ERE I SAW RIDLEY

Alex

Ridley has dropped some absolute bangers and is responsible for a franchise that I adore to this day, but he's got some chuds in there too and his flash over substance can be suspect too. I hate when Will bags on him like he does but he's not wrong.

Alex

For a legend-tier director it rally is wild. Some of the stupidest shit every and some of my favorite works of all time. Crazy.

Alex

He's biting on his brother's aesthetic

vermouth

worst movie in decades, eons maybe

Wario Argento

Chris's joke at 52:20 has a long fuse but finds its mark

Paul F. Holzfäller

Went to half chub when Will shouted out Sharpe. The movies are good, but the book series is awesome. CHOSEN MEN!

Reece Coren

the battle of adam friedland

Chris

american left wing thought cycle - smart, maybe cool people talk about X for years, decades even, laypeople pick it up, interpret the message, repeat the message and desire is formed. X finally happens, laypeople rightfully celebrate, smart cool people make fun of laypeople for celebrating X. Repeat with each new piece of info or event

No Relation to Henry

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who pedantically corrected the error in my head and also thought about what “Ridley” is backwards.

RG13

The Hunger is better than Alien.

Andrew Bates

Wish yall said “erotic” as much as you said “sclerotic” if ya know what im sayin

Nick Robinson

Best napoleon in movies remains. Time Bandits.

bruce

one single good movie

Simple Socialist

What's hilarious about the men think about napoleon thing is that napoleon was ALSO THINKING ABOUT ROME ALL THE TIME. That's why he gave his regiments eagle standards and had his own praetorian guard and a much of marshals of dubious skill. Thinking about Rome is a common westoid dumb guy thing for centuries, even the founding fathers were romeaboos

Bil

I thought I liked Felix but I just realized that I tend to like eps where he's completely checked out more than those where he's riffing

William

He’s fine

Poppy Chulo

He's made at least three iconic classic.

crabbe

Weren't musicians used to give orders during battle? Like this specific cadence of drum meant to do this formation?

Dan

U suck

Tyler Sutherland

Absolutely not are you high lmfao Napoleon genuinely out-thought his opponents and worked up a ladder and won scores of battles across Europe, Stalin was a violent drunk moron, a wannabe bandit out for money who was purely an opportunist, nothing more. The fact that he believed NAZI GERMANY wouldn't attack the USSR even after his own spies said "yo, fam, somethings up". Stalin was born blessed by circumstances beyond his control and machinations, shown by the fact that he took a dump on Marxism and turned it into "Capitalism But For Me"

Eamon Short

Fucking A! Been waiting for amber's return for ages. BTW, her book rules, check it out guys.

Hall wingfield

Matt's absence is sorely felt on this one : ( Get well soon buddy

J.P. McD.

I liked the movie a lot, with the caveat that I read the Roberts biography a few months ago so I had more context. I thought I recalled reading that he was a bad lover.
