Matt James Rich

Always loved the intro to this episode, listing off all of the crises that America orchestrated and walked into.

Natalie

Agree I'm only half through but it's fascinating and I'm glad I can learn history but not have to worry about hearing some absurd America loving takes

Mitch Jones

That intro is so good. Love the nod to Koyaanisqatsi. Life out of balance indeed.

Ozzie

Finishing up the 2nd play through of my favorite Chapo spin off series. Thanks for adding here for easy replayability!

Missing Matt's indignation and bent toward the historic narrative at this point in history

The Squash

Ya know Matt may be the brains but you're so much more than just the arms and legs Chris. I Really appreciate what you do.

The Squash

I bet I have no idea about 99% of what you do. Anyways, keep it up. (Clap on back)

Eli Da Great

This was a great series. I learned a lot. Thank you both for the excellent content.

etienne

anyone remembers the Trans Pacific Partnership? that was the asian trade deal that Obungler negociated and Hilldawg was supposed to pass. Thousands upon thousands of pages of byzantine intellectual property extension tacked on top of NAFTA Part Deux: now your job is in Indonesia. Underrated factor why Hilly lost the GE. Trump and Sanders saw it and were like "wtf is this shit?" and the official explanation was "look it's to do geopolitical containment against china". Trump shitcanned it, one of his few good calls

HuffingGasInTheShed

This has been so enlightening. We can all see the big shifts, thank you guys walking us through the forces and the progressively worse deals behind them

Tyler Sutherland

"Biden was elected president with a sturdy margin"??? He almost lost by a margin even closer than Trump beat Clinton in 2016, what are you even talking about Chris lol

etienne

i had the same reaction lol it took them a week to count the swing states

Tyler Sutherland

I took the time to add the totals together. For starters, Biden got 306EC votes and Trump 232EC votes. The closest states were GA (0.23%/11.7k votes, 16EC), AZ (0.31%/10.4k votes, 11EC), and WS (0.63%, 20.6k votes, 10EC). All those added together add up to a margin that would bring Trump and Biden to 269 each, which would throw the election to the House of Representatives. Technically PA is the next "closest" state at 1.16% (80.5k votes, 20EC), but another tipping point imho might be NV, at 2.39% (33.5k votes, 6EC). Either one of those states swings to Trump and it's a wrap, and both have been swinging GOP lately so it was never out of the question. A tweak of Democratic turnout here or there and it's Trump by a squeaker, even with a huge popular vote loss.

(On modern America) “Lumpen ruling class, lumpen bourgeois, lumpen workers that do not process the world through any other lens other than as a individual consumer within a mediated spectacle of political participation” goddamn boys

Dr Nguyen Van Phuoc

I'm John Kerry and I'm reporting *puts on aviators* for booty

Mac daddy

Chris had me crying with that edit of that "I'm not a perfect person" song over Trumps apology lmao

Karl Hungus

The opening music, Pruitt Igoe, is from the film Koyaanisquatsi, and played over the demolition of the housing project Pruitt-Igoe, which was designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, who also designed the original World Trade Center twin towers

Here, Try This

I so wish we could get an addendum. Trump 2: Election Boogaloo

king_von_diesel

Dang, Trump II and Biden being an F tier prezzie deserve a follow up. hope the dry boy one day let's us know what he thinks of this whole mess

Nathan

It’s interesting hearing Matt’s discussion on the powerlessness of the presidency in the context of Trump’s second term. Trump does have a compliant SC and Congress but he’s also going balls to the walls with reorganizing the federal government, setting tariffs, deploying the national guard and bullying universities. The presidency isn’t powerless; it’s just the only thing Biden and Obama wanted to do with that power was send weapons to Israel and bomb people in the ME.

Chapo Bath House

RIP Herman Cain Look up Imagine There's No Pizza for a smile

james

Listened to this when it first came out on Stitcher, listened to it when y'all released it here, listening again in the current day. The analysis remains raw as fuck. As republicans get stupider and crueler, and Democrats more enamored with process, everything continues to suck more in burgerland

Reece Coren

Ugh, I wish you two could’ve had your own podcast❤️I will never stop listening to this series. Everyone must hear it. Matt and Chris are my Shaq and Penny not just in terms of historical analysis and podcasting, but also song and super bowl commercial references. How lucky are we to live in a world where this podcast exists

Marxist-Swoletarianist

@1:48:19 it’s wild coming back here in 2026 listening to early 2017 Trump. American Sunset indeed.
