Comicaptor goes to the movies: Superman. (Patreon)

So, as some of you long time followers and friends may know, I occasionally like to post my thoughts out DC movies and TV shows if they cross my path.
Well, is there any better place to give my thoughts on the new Superman movies than to a semi-captive audience like yourselves?
No spoilers, but here we go!
It’s… ok.
Nowhere near the standards of Gunn’s guardians trilogy (which for me are under appreciated and up there with some of the best trilogies of all time), but it’s dumb fun. Maybe too much dumb fun. This felt like it should be the second installment of a trilogy or series.
In trying to cram too much universe building into things, I can’t help but think screen time fleshing out Clark/Lois and their relationship would have been a better use of screen time than some of the set pieces.
Hoult’s Luthor was comic book over the top perfection, the film’s less than subtle approach to certain world events on point and I’m left wanting more of Jimmy Olsen and Mr Terrific.
The messaging of getting hit over and over but getting back up, fighting for good despite the struggle and aspiring to just be a better person despite your flaws work FAR BETTER than any dark, superficial takes on god-complex in muted colours.
So, while not the home run entry I had hoped to kickstart the new DCU, it was by no means a dud.
It just needed some refining in my eyes. Strip some bloat out even at the expense of some rushed but probably needed world building, to focus more on the trifecta of Clark/Lois and Luthor and their dynamics.
No spoilers in the comments, but if you’ve seen it, what did you think?
