This is so sad! Safari is dying and everyone knows it. The hyenas are getting restless...I'm betting their instincts are kicking in and they are contemplating making a meal out of him once he passes. Maybe I'm wrong and they're just getting ready to give Mondo space to say goodbye, but their actions come off as a tad unsettling/ominous in those last panels. It seems very insensitive and borderline awful to us, but...these are animals, and they are depicted somewhat realistically. Most animals don't hold funerals or bury their dead. Dead animals always wind up as food for something else -- that's nature's way. The hyenas tolerate the assorted cat species their matriarch allows to live with/among them, but I doubt they see them as truly belonging to the cackle/being one of them. Once Safari dies his body is just meat lying there...why should they let it go to waste or let other animals have it when times are tough and they could really use the food? Again, it's super sad that Safari is dying. I wish like most readers that it wasn't happening and that he'd start eating and either heal up completely or lose the bad leg and get used to living on 3 legs. He's a sweetheart, and I'm as fond of him as the next person. But if he HAS to die I don't have a problem with the hyenas eating him, since he'd be eaten by something anyway as I said, and it kind of pays them back for protecting him/allowing him to live as long as he has. I just hope that, if they do it, they don't do it in front of Mondo. That would be super insensitive. Excellent page, as always. The "Eye-yeens" panel is my fave!

You know, this got me curious... What does Faidas clan think of her choises to incorporate other species? They probably follow her cause she is strong but do they really agree with her? Though this reaction here seem mainly instinct mix with hunger kicking in, since predator become less picky when they have less option are around.
