Hello, my lovely Virtue Fanclub! Today we're talking about Reign of the Hypno-Sis #1. For ease of communication, I'll abbreviate it to RotHS or Reign whenever I mention it from here on. With that out of the way, let's dig in.

This is going to be a two-parter BTS post, with the second part coming after issue #2 of RotHS. Part 1 focuses on setting the table for the crossover, Part 2 will focus on the actual comic and what went into making it.

SECRET ORIGINSI've been working on RotHS for a while. The idea came to me pretty soon after I made my first superhero comics in 2021. Between Mr. Supreme in The Horny Devil and the Hypno-Sis transformed heroes like Wonderbuns, The Finder, and Dolly Maid, I knew I had to make a crossover eventually. This is a superhero universe after all.

So with that in mind, I focused on building out my universe to be a place full of potential plot threads and hooks.

HOUSE OF IDEAS

My first big step towards a unified setting was 2022's Lair of the Hypno-Sis. In that comic I introduced the concept of the Virtue Force and continued laying the groundwork for Hypno-Sis's sinister plot that was established in The Finder. Essentially, HS is trying different methods of feminization out on the heroes of Metro City. She always has a plan and she always gets the last laugh. To what end? Read issue 2 of RotHS to find out ;)

Lair was a lot of fun to work on and one of my more successful comics, especially at the time. In 2023, I added a few more characters to the universe like The Bee and FeMail.

FeMail was my highest page count comic when it came out. It was a lot of hard work and it put me off of working on superhero comics for a while. That being said, I still am quite fond of that book and it became an important element of the universe I was building.

MR ACTION

Outside of the actual comics, I was also producing plenty of illustrations about Mr. Supreme's buddy, Jamie Owens. He's an obvious riff on Jimmy Olsen from DC Comics, of course. Jimmy Olsen is constantly getting transformed into things and pulled into strange situations he couldn't have foreseen. If you mix in some feminization, you get a whole new set of stories to play with. And so Jamie Owens was born.

With all of these elements in play, I knew a crossover was inevitable. I just wasn't confident enough in my art to commit to it in 2024 like I had originally planned. I believe that was the right decision, seeing now how my style has improved over those two years.

VIRTUE AND VICE

The name Vice Squad came up when my collaborator Estel and I were emailing back and forth in 2024. It was actually Estel's concept originally. What if the Virtue Force turned evil and called themselves the Vice Squad. So clever! I had to put it in the story.

Of course including the Virtue Force in Reign meant that I had to do some design work. I didn't want Black Eagle to be a Batman/Blue Falcon anymore. I wanted him to be more like Hawkman, Falcon, or Angel. Wings first, everything else second. So I changed him from his original design in Lair. In-universe, Black Eagle II is actually Black Eagle's I sidekick, Birdy, who is a man now and has taken on the mantle.

NEXT TIME...

That's all for now! Next time we'll get into the process of making RotHS, including the Virtue Fortress's design and how an 8-issue Jack Kirby comic inspired a major format shift.

Thank you for reading my work and supporting me. I really appreciate that you want to see more of the process. I will try to post more sketches and WIPs for you all soon.

If you have any questions about Metro City or its many heroes and villains, leave them in the comments.

Will you be doing more with the Bee and Queen Bee in the future?

JoNothing

I don't have a solid idea for her, but I wouldn't mind doing more.

I had a few questions so I'll list them out. 1. I noticed on the last page of RoTHS that the Young Paragons weren't listed but only Queen Bee was from that team. Are they still part of the Metro City universe? 2. Was there a Where Are They Now page planned for the villains given in The Finder we did see Q Inventor but she made no appearance in RoTHS nor did The Keeper or Blockhead from The Bee either? 3. Is Her still part of the Metro City universe and the women from the Frat House too? 4. What design inspirations went into Hypno Sis from her original appearance and her current one? 5. You mentioned that Hypno-Sis tried various methods of feminization but from most of the demonstrations of her powers, it seems what she suggests is made reality so were there other methods she hasn't tried that you would show? 6. You mentioned that Black Eagle II was once Birdy and you said "who is a man now". would Birdy identify as a trans man? 7. Given the Bolt, the Bee, and The Finder had their own feminizations forced upon them, are there any characters that willingly seek out getting feminized? 8. What about Comet's team like Stretch-O and the other characters on that team, are they part of the Virtue Force or is Comet the only one that's a member? 9. What's the relationship between Brickhouse and Hercules since Brickhouse's debut and are the two still romantically involved? But what are Brickhouse's powers exactly? And was Brickhouse part of the Virtue Force before meeting Hypno-Sis? 10.Is Lust a hero in the Metro City universe or is she a variant like an Earth1 or Earth2 variant? Is she even a witch in this universe?

Wow that's a lot of questions! 1. The Young Paragons are still in the universe. They're just dealing with another crisis offworld. 2. Q the Inventor is around, stay tuned. 3. Her is still part of the Metro City universe, yes. I've been thinking about Her recently and how best to use Her again. Nothing concrete yet, but I think I have an idea. 4. I'll get into Hypno-Sis's design in the next issue's behind the scenes post. Suffice it to say I wanted to give her a design that evoked cults of the 1960s and 70s. 5. She used the Silicon Sultan's lair in to feminize The Bolt and she used chemicals in The Finder. The Stylomat is a representation of those two technologies combining. 6. No, Black Eagle II is a nod towards the concept of the teen sidekick who grew up offscreen and is now an adult. Black Eagle II is cis. I would like to put a trans man in at some point, but I'd have to think about how best to use a character like that. 7. I'm sure there are, but I haven't told any stories about them yet. 8. The Adventurenauts is its own team, but Comet is also a part of the expanded Virtue Force roster. 9. Brickhouse and Hunkules are a couple. Brickhouse's powers are super strength and durability. Think someone like Luke Cage. Brickhouse used to be Captain Fist, but joined the VF as Brickhouse alongside Hunkules. 10. Lust is not a hero in Metro City. She's playing the part of a nail technician. As for her status as a denizen of the universe, she's just a cameo. There is no greater lore implication for her appearance in this comic. I hope that helps :)

It does and I like learning more about this universe too. I did have a few more questions? 1. What were the inspirations behind Death Mask/Dolly Maid? I thought they might be a Punisher or Vigilante type of character? 2. I noticed much like the inspo behind Jamie Owens' transformations, it harkens back to the goofier TF aspects but it seems like Jamie Owens TFs get reversed unlike other heroes. Much of older TF media, and even in mainstream superhero comics who often revert back to a character status quo after a brief tf, try to make the TGTF part irreversible but is the fact that those stay in their TF forms more of a decision to give them agency over keeping what's been done to them and refusing any attempts to "change back"? 3. Is the Silicon Sultan still around as well along with Q the Inventor and did they go through the same step with the Bolt's transformation or were certain steps added for their feminization? And what were the inspirations behind the Silicon Sultan? But any chance we might see that transformation too. 4. How aware are the Virtue Force aware of what happened to the Bolt and when Hypno Sis altered The Bolt's memories, did it also affect reality to reflect the change how the world's history of her with her feminized form? 5. Are the Adventurenauts similar to the Fantastic Four and is there a plan to feature the whole team? 6. In The Bee Part 2, it's mentioned that she came out as pansexual but what are the sexualities of most of the other heroes(and were they also altered by their feminizations)? Also do you have the exact ages for the heroes as well as villains too? 7. And are there any real life actors or models you'd say could represent your characters? 8. We've seen The Virtue Force and the Young Paragons but is there a supervilliain equivalent like The Secret Society or The Legion of Doom of other supervilliains besides Hypno-Sis? 9. How far can Hypno-Sis's powers go when transforming someone physically with her 3rd eye? We've seen she can change height and bust size but can she affect a person's age or possibly split them into two or maybe three?
