OOF! Well, this was a long time coming... I think things can only get better from here, and I'm ending this episode with a feeling of hope and positivity. I think Willow is taking the right steps to be getting back to "Old Yeller" again.

This episode was a bit weird and creepy in places (looking at YOU magic dungeon house!) but all in all, I think it's good steps towards a better future!

I hope you enjoyed, and I'll see you in the next one 🤗

"I think things can only get better from here"... OMG!

LMAO 🤣🤣 Come on, it has to! It's all come to a head now with the magic and Willow. It HAS TO IMPROVE! At least, for Willow! No magic! Things will be good! We'll have Old Reliable back! Tara will be happy! EVERYONE WILL BE HAPPY. That's it... I'm going to completely give up on any hope from now on 🤣 I'm done. **has tantrum**

That wasn't Wilows car. She stole it amongst everything else she did. I think Buffy has some animosity towards Willow for taking her from Heaven. So yes I think that's what you are picking up on. By the way did u notice Rack was the vampire Buffy had to fight during the Councils test? He's also in Xfiles...lol

xjuliettex

OH!!! Now that you mention it, I can absolutely tell he was the vampire! I didn't recognise him at the time (clearly haha). That's cool! I was actually just talking about Giles and that council test with my family yesterday. I said that's probably the only bad thing he's done (and even then he came clean to Buffy). Thank you for letting me know ☺️

I think Buffy didn't give Willow the benefit of the doubt because Dawn slapped her after she tried apologizing and Willow's recent history of bad decision making probably didn't help either.

I have a lot to say about this episode. I know this episode is one of the reasons some people don't like season 6, because they think the Willow addiction storyline is just shoehorned in out of nowhere. Just personally one of the reasons I love season 6 is because Willow's story arc in this feels like a natural progression of an underlying character arc for her that started back in season 2. You sort of asked what it's like to just stop an addictive substance. In Willow's case the withdrawals she's going through look very akin to withdrawals from opiates, such as heroin. It's not pleasant to go through, symptoms can include a runny nose, cold sweats (your bones feel like they've been replaced by blocks of ice, but your entire body is pouring sweat at the same time), aching joints, muscle and stomach cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, uncontrollable shakes. It lasts about a week all up, with days 3 and 4 tending to be the worst. It's also the easy part of getting over an addiction, the psychological cravings that persist afterwards are much harder. Imagine being stuck in the desert without water, and how thirsty and desperate you would feel just to be able to drink something. That's what it's like with heroin at least. Quick note on Willow's initial visit to Rack's, before I talk more about Willow's path to addiction (it has a lot of similarities to my own). That "I'm just gonna take a little tour" scene was Willow essentially prostituting herself for magic. First of all Rack clearly looked like he was getting some sort of sexual pleasure from the exchange, second of all he used the word 'Strawberry' in reference to Willow, which is an old LA street slang term for a prostitute, third you had Willow crying under the shower (something I did myself the first time I worked the street, because I felt so dirty), and lastly Willow says to Buffy, "I did things I can't even...", I've always thought among possible other things she did, that was partly in relation to her sinking low enough to allow someone like Rack to 'tour her body'. I'll post my thoughts on Willow's addiction arc in another comment, so this doesn't end up as a complete wall 'o' text.

Okay, now let's talk about Willow's entire addiction arc. I'll use some of my own experiences to try and illustrate what I mean as well. When we first meet Willow she's a shy, awkward little thing, who wears clothes picked out by her mother, gets picked on at school and seemingly just accepts that's her role in life for the most part. It was pretty much that way for me growing up as well. I was this brainiac nerd, who was terribly unfashionable with my hand me down and home made clothing, who got picked on and bullied, and who didn't really have the courage, sense of self or any self esteem at all to try and stand up for myself. Like Willow telling Cordelia to press 'del' for deliver, I did occasionally try and get some of my own back with my bullies, but in very ineffectual, petty and sometimes vindicative ways, that did nothing to address any actual issues. When Willow says, "Who was I? Just some girl", I felt that because it's basically her saying she was nobody, she was 'just some girl', like she wasn't worth even mentioning without the magic. It's how I felt most of the time prior to and when my own addiction was developing. Then Willow discovers magic in season 2, and suddenly she's no longer 'Willow the shy, awkward and picked on computer nerd', she's 'Willow the magic wielder, Willow the witch in training'. She's somebody now. I started smoking marijuana when I was 11, and it made me kind of feel the same way. I went from feeling like, "I'm nobody" to feeling like "Hey, check me out, I'm a cool, rebellious, dope smoking tween". It sounds really pathetic now, but when your sense of self, and self esteem is that low you can have a tendency to look to things outside of yourself to try and boost your own non existent confidence. Trouble is it's just a crutch in the end, and one you can become increasingly reliant on. So Willow has her magic now, and she feels like a somebody, but she also starts feeling like now she's useful. So double boost of happiness, she's no longer a complete nobody and she can be useful. It was the same with me. By the time I was in my mid to late teens, and especially by the time I was in my 20s, I had enough connections to be the one people went to if they wanted to get stuff. So yes I was a dealer, and yes it made me feel useful and gave me an ego boost knowing I could 'help' people out and get them what they wanted/needed. And once again it's a false ego boost, because Willow wasn't useless before she had magic, it's just how she felt inside. But again it's easier to project feelings of 'useless' or 'useful' onto something outside yourself, than it is to deal with the fact that you don't feel that way on the inside. And now, bonus round, Willow has been shown repeatedly not coping well with negative emotions, but hey there's always magic to try and not deal with all that stuff. That is prime addiction risk stuff right there, and I'd argue you're already in the early stages of addiction when you start using your drugs (magics) of choice as a crutch to not have to deal with stuff. Again I did the exact same thing with drugs: don't wanna feel sad? There's a drug for that; don't like feeling so anxious? There's a drug for that too; had a fight with a friend and you don't like feeling bad about it? Guess what, drugs!. By season 4 Willow is openly defensive about her drug use. This is the point that I've always felt cements her path to eventual all out addiction, because it shows an increasing dependence to the point that she reacts negatively when someone tries to point out things like dangers, or her level of actual expertise (She gets upset with Oz when he expresses concern, she yells "I'm not your sidekick" at Buffy when Buffy questions her magic ability). By season 5 she's starting to lie to Tara and Buffy about magic or stuff connected to magic, she's seemingly becoming stronger and more confident in her use of magic, which considering everything that has come before is not actually a good thing. So now we're at season 6 and Willow's become fully engulfed by her addiction to Magic. And despite all of the flashing neon signs along the way, some people still don't see that the addiction arc didn't just come out of nowhere. I've always found that a little odd to be honest.

Thank you for sharing. And thank you for your cogent thoughts on Willow's path. I pray for your continued success on your path.

Claire Eyles

You're welcome, and thank you. I've been clean for 22 years this year now. No way in hell I'm going back. :)

xjuliettex

Claire 💜 thank you so much for sharing your story and personal insights into Willow's thoughts and feelings. I can't imagine how difficult it would have been for you, and I think you're absolutely amazing for getting through all of that and out the other side. You are just incredible 🥰

Michael Short

You know Willow screwed up when Buffy trusts Dawn with Spike over Willow.

Alan Kobb

You think things can only get better from here??? Ah, such innocence. In every other season the real bad stuff didn't come out until the "big baddie" of the season got active, and once that happens, then any gains that were made earlier in the season are in question. If you look at this season, so far the only "baddies" that we've seen are the three guys who stole a diamond. Maybe they are the big baddies, or maybe there's something even worse, and then who knows what will happen with Willow's magic addiction and Buffy's Spike-addiction.

Ashley Thomas

the guy who plays rack (sp?) was the scary vampire in the 18th birthday episode too. obviously this is supposed to be a stand in for addiction. that place was clearly like a drug house. its sad, but I dunno how I would have reacted in buffys place. i think about if it were my kid in dawns place and I think I would have left willow there and been there for the innocent child who got hurt. but I know that willow and buffy are so close so I dunno. its hard, I think my sympathy kinda ends when kids start getting hurt or neglected. but I also think someone needed to intervene for willow sooner. but I don't know how.

Todd Bolton

Also, when she sees Willow's eyes after Willow has destroyed the monster, it is obvious that Willow is still tripping on magic

Todd Bolton

Agreed. Your comments are wonderful. My own addiction has followed the same arc. The entire show has brilliantly shown this developing, as you say, from season two.

Todd Bolton

Intense episode. I assume, Buffy was immediately angry at Willow because it was obvious she was "wrecked" (or high, according to the drug metaphor). Her eyes were jet black. While I'm sure what Amy said influenced her, if she hadn't run across Willow in that state, she would likely have given her the benefit of the doubt, at least, at first. There's been no indication that Buffy is angry at Willow for bringing her back - in fact, she's been the one defending Willow. She was angry at her for putting Dawn in danger. Period.
