So..... I have NO IDEA what is going on. I think I figured it out (very late, mind you, almost at the end of the episode) but I admit to spending pretty much the entirety of this episode confused, in denial, and feeling dumb.

That is, until the ending, where you will hear me let out possibly the biggest scream in my reaction history 😱😱 So a little warning for you!!

Yes, there was definitely some confusion there. It was very enjoyable to see you trying to figure things out though. Juliette 💜 thanks for another excellent reaction and I hope you have a lovely weekend. (Oh, great scream by the way!)

Lime Pie

The denial was definitely strong in this reaction lol, but I can see how you came to the conclusions that you did. I think Spike remembering doing the killing by the end of the episode makes it clear that he was the one that did it though. The singer at the Bronze was none other than Aimee Mann. I don't know if you've seen the film "Magnolia" (definitely worth checking out if you haven't), but she did the soundtrack for it. The first song sounds like it was written with season 6 in mind, particularly the line "'Cause it's all about drugs, it's all about shame".

Don't worry Jules. The clues are all there, but they are very difficult to spot.

Yes you should totally binge this season. It would give you some ease of mind so you won't suffer too long due to all those cliffhangers. I personally like this final season a lot. But season 5 still remains my favorite, that one was so emotional.

I'm going to try to watch more than I usually watch, for sure! I definitely don't want any spoilers so if I can get ahead that would be cool!

xjuliettex

BAHAHA oh dear, I honestly have no clue what to think. It just doesn't make sense how Spike could be killing these people but he IS (I think) but how, I don't know. He's got a chip AND a soul - he's basically a saint 😜 it's just so weird but really intriguing! Oh wow, I have head of Aimee Mann I think but I haven't seen Magnolia and I know nothing really of her other than a vague sense of her name is familiar!

Neil 💜😊 AHHH I am so glad I warned for the scream haha that moment was NOT FUN. I am going to start a riot against Joss at this point, he really seems to love doing awful things to us 🤣 I hope you have a great weekend, too! Today (saturday) I'm working on the next Buffy edit, recording some footage for a video essay I'm trying to work on for RDR2 and getting a kebab and chips for dinner so it's all planned nicely 😅🥰

I don't think this is a particularly good episode. I get that it's meant to be confusing and we're not really supposed to know what's going on. But it's just not well executed in my opinion. It's.... messy. Not in an intentional way.

Oliver

Were you aware of the episode's title, when you watched it? Since I saw this episode from DVD for the first time, this cleared my confusion about Spike rather instantly (I think). The cliffhanger with Giles on the other hand.... Whoa.

xjuliettex

It's not until after I watch the episode that I really notice the title, but I don't really get the reference of Sleeper. I can vaguely think of a movie with the same title, maybe?

xjuliettex

OH GOOD, it's meant to be confusing 🤣 I'm already dreading the youtube comments that will no doubt berate me for not getting it and saying they understand exactly what was happening, right from episode 1!

Oliver

Oh, I see, maybe it's not as obvious as I thought for an English native speaker. So the following might be a spoiler for all those who haven't seen the next episode yet! In German (my first language) the literal translation of sleeper means exactly the same, someone who sleeps. But within an assassin/killer context it makes me instantly think of a "sleeper agent", which is a well known movie/TV trope, especially in the form of a brainwashed, unconscious agent who is programmed to kill someone after being activated e.g. by hearing or seeing a certain trigger. So my instant idea was that the chip didn't work because Spike wasn't consciously killing someone. That is why I thought the title was kind of a spoiler

The tune Aimee Mann is performing here is called "Pavlov's Bell". Great song.

Priceless screech, when Giles “dies”. Probably your greatest denial, up to this point, of the girls Spike has killed: “I think the girls are demons”. Now that you do music reactions, Aimee Mann would be a wonderful singer to react to. She’s so good. The song she’s singing, “Pavlov’s Bell” is one of my favorites. I love her line, as she and the band are leaving, “I hate vampire towns”. And Billy Idol got his look from Spike!
