he'll laugh at the Jackson and Lydia scene, but the scene where Stefan doesn't feed on Elena even while compelled, I guess that's super different and well written. maybe bc Klaus is a better villain. both shows were badly written but had their moments and were entertaining enough especially to our young brains. I'll admit that TVD does some things better but it's not a well written show. I think bro has recency bias because I remember him ripping apart TVD but that was years ago so who knows.

In my personal opinion — and honestly from what I’ve seen in the fandom too — most of us kind of agree that the first two seasons are very mid but still enjoyable. So I completely understand your frustration. Even after years of watching it and rewatching it (both on my own and through other reactors), I still think Seasons 1 and 2 are pretty okay (nothing ground-breaking). That’s the best way to describe them. It’s not that they’re bad — they just feel like every other teen drama of that time. Your comparison to amateur high school basketball was actually perfect. It feels like there are cool concepts there, but they’re not fully executed. I can give Season 1 some grace because it’s Season 1. A lot of supernatural teen dramas don’t have the strongest first seasons. But Season 2 being that similar in quality is what makes it feel like a bit of a letdown. It has really good ideas, but the execution just feels off. It’s very on par with Season 1, which is why it still feels mid. Also, separating seasons from villains for a second — Gerard is toward the bottom for most of the fandom. In my personal ranking, he’s either the worst or second worst villain of the entire show. Now, I don't want to hype up Season 3 too much because I want you to come to your own conclusions, but I will say that a lot of the issues you mentioned at the end of Season 2 are handled differently in Season 3. Season 3 is usually the season people point to when they talk about the stronger parts of the show. It does feel like there’s a noticeable shift. The writing feels more cohesive, characters who seemed pushed aside earlier get more meaningful focus, and concepts are followed through in a way that feels more intentional. I’m not saying Season 3 is flawless, but it does feel like a tonal shift compared to the first two seasons. Even on rewatches, I usually only go back to a handful of episodes from Seasons 1 and 2 — maybe seven or eight total. Most of the time, I just start at Season 3. That’s just my personal preference. Again, I’m not trying to glaze or overhype it. I just wanted to say I had a lot of the same frustrations you did, and the show does shift from here. I’m genuinely curious what you’ll think going into Season 3.
