Answering your question about the spin off. I think Callie does get better in general. However, the show is more about Mariana than Callie as it goes and the other characters in the show. I think the spin off is pretty good, you should definitely check it out after you finish The Fosters as it literally takes places right after the last episode of The Fosters

For a while she was different. I definitely kept waiting for her to do certain things and then would be pleasantly surprised when communication would happen or she'd choose to do the smart thing. But there was a turn in the show where she started doing stupid stuff again. (this is going off my memory. its been a couple years since i last watched the spin off) It's worth a watch imo or at least a try for about 3 episodes to see how he vibes with the show
