Charisma Carpenter was pregnant during this season which might help you understand why she is missing at the moment and has the weird tacked on endings...i think they were trying to figure out what they were going to do.

Cordelia’s treatment this season is one of the big reasons why I don’t like season 4. Joss Whedon was mad at Charisma for not disclosing her pregnancy and punished her accordingly.
