I get you weren't really into this season and that's fine, but I really hope you give next season a chance. I enjoyed it more and I hope you do too.

Finally! I’ve been holding back until you finished Season 12 because I have so many opinions. I apologize for the length in advance. Here we go: First I’ll say this is the season of the show that caused me to quit on my initial watch-through. I find it infuriating because it has, in my opinion, SO MUCH POTENTIAL to be an amazing season. The character dynamics are there. The story ideas work. At times it just sings (like Dean’s fantastic monologue in Mary’s mind). The problem is they don’t spend the season building up to and supporting those moments. I’m not a fan of the Anti-Christ story, it feels played out and as a whole, I wish the show took bigger steps away from the Heaven/Hell stuff earlier on in its run. It often feels slow and like a rehash to me. And for whatever reason (I suspect budget) they refused to ever grow the cast beyond the core boys. Which can work, but they needed to figure out what to do with Cas. Every time he can’t be in an episode they make it so he’s sneaky doing stuff behind the boys backs. And when he is in an episode he’s often off in his own storyline. And they did the same thing with Mary! The point of the characters, the fun of these characters, is their interaction with our main characters. Let them be on screen together for more than a few plot heavy scenes! Imagine if Mary was in Regarding Dean, imagine her having to babysit and comfort him as his mine regressed, as she watched him realize how depressing and horrible parts of his life had been. Imagine her It’s CRAZY to me that Mary is basically absent from the Kelly story, a story all about MOTHERHOOD. Kelly is essentially unwisely lavishing her child with unconditional love, the kind of thing that the boys probably assumed they’d get from their mother in their years of idolizing her. Instead she is uncomfortable and kind of distant. And to have that natural parallel there and never dig into it is such a missed opportunity. Moreover, I think one of the things that really hurt this season for you is the fact you immediately decided they child was innately evil. It’s not unreasonable but if you look at the show thematically it’s always been about free will and pre-determination. Back in Season 2 John told Dean he’d have to kill Sam. Later as we approached season 5 and it became clear Sam was addicted to demon blood and Lucifer’s vessel, it seemed like Sam was destined from birth to go bad. Their struggle against God was all about their need to assert that they weren’t controlled by an outside force. (I think at its best the show uses its lore as a metaphor for family trauma, how it defines us, and how we can struggle against it while also holding a sentimental attachment to family itself.) So this was the show again exploring that concept but they didn’t dig in. None of our characters were giving the ‘we can’t assume this infant is evil’ side until very late in the season, once the audience had already made up its mind. They deal with that same concept several times this season (The psychic kid in “American Nightmare,” Hilter’s Descendant in “The One You’ve Been Waiting For,” The nephilim in “Lily Sunder Sends Her Regards”, The werewolf in “Ladies Drink Free”) but instead of centering the anti-christ story around this they waste their time with silly scenes about Lucifer and Crowley’s rivalry. But as a whole I would’ve cut this story pretty much all together. Less about Lucifer and Kelly and more fun one-off episodes highlight the new dynamics between the boys and Mom. Between mom and the world. She was the hook of the season and there’s so much interesting stuff they could do with her. With so much of her character grounded in that one Season 4 episode where Dean time travels, there’s a lot to explore. She had that heartbreaking scene where she told him the most horrible thing she can imagine in the whole world is her kids growing up as hunters. She is revived and learns that’s exactly what happened. It makes sense for her to have emotional turmoil. She has guilt. Her kids, and Dean in particular reads that as her being ashamed of them. It’s all there but they never REALLY explore it. And it makes sense that she’d want to work for the Men of Letters because they’re promising her the things she’s dreamt of since childhood: a way out of the life her birthright chained her to, a way to stop hunting and free her kids from that burden. Lastly I’d say it was a huge mistake to intro the Brits as hostile. There’s no reason for it. If they show up as helpful it makes way more sense why Mary and Sam are eager to get on board. Dean is skeptical but its just his gut. As the season progresses we see they’re hardline believers, when they have issues with the boys methods or magical allies like Cas, Garth, or Crowley. Then you start to move the needle, introduce the nephilim and put the boys on a collision course that will eventually leave them at odds with the Brits. It’s just so easy to fix. All the ingredients are there!

Yeah s13 and our new character does make the show way better for me. S12 was such a struggle, though it did have some incredible one off episodes in between. S13 is different.

I'm just waiting for the final season at this point lol
