This episode was directed by Jonathan Frakes, who also directed Those Old Scientists (where the two ensigns come from the future / Lower Decks). Frakes also portrayed Riker in The Next Generation, who is famous for swinging his leg over chairs. This is referenced in this episode's ending but also Those Old Scientists, where Boimler mounts Pike's saddle and shouts "Riker!"

Also, the holodeck setting chock full of references to the real-world production of Star Trek. (1) Martin Luther King Jr. convinced Nichelle Nichols (original Uhura) to stay on because of how inspiring she was; it's only fitting that the current Uhura convey much the same feelings. (2) Chapel's actress is portraying the first officer. In the original pilot "The Cage", the first officer is portrayed by Majel Roddenberry who later went on to portray Chapel in the main show. (3) the producer is a woman who was once an actress; Lucille Ball (I Love Lucy) was a pivotal role in TOS' production Also, the actress who plays the doctor says "I'm an actor, not a doctor", which alludes to McCoy's "I'm a doctor, not a ___" I'm worried that La'an will die too :( the perils of knowing canon!
