In HBO's defense I dont think they actually announced a Daeron casting, it was leaked. Like considering this show v the book, it is genuinely remarkable when team black does something good, credit goes to Jace, Corlys, or Daemon, but when they make a bad decision, usually its rhaenyra or mysaria who gets blamed. Also Alicent is pretty much a one-dimensional villain who starts a blood feud with a child. And I think GRRM is making a point with that story. Of course he does; apparently how HotD is going so... Ya, Queen Rhaenyra and Hand Alicent is like the best possible outcome, BUT ALAS. Ya, if Rhaenyra had a less troubled succession and a competent and loyal council around her (which, uh, she seems to constantly lack), she would have done fine! Like there would have been trouble but if she had all the dragonriders, there would be no rebellion. but alas. Corlys did offer Baela to be his heir last season and she declined (to be fair she thought she was going to be queen). Ya watching this i was struggle by how awful a system of decision-making petitioning the crown is. A great reaction!!!
