Interest pixel art critique/feedback? (Patreon)
Content
(note: this is a meta post, no download today)
Today I tried to go to the old pixelation.org forums and it's unfortunate that I couldn't find them. I'm sure that there are individually-hosted archives out there, but it used to be an easily-accessible place to get good-faith in-depth artistic feedback on pixel art techniques with the goal of learning and improvement. Many of those critique threads were all-timers and contributed massively to the art form as a whole.
(TBH it should be compiled and published into some sort of nice big hardcover art history textbook, if anybody does have the archive.)
To get to the point: I feel a duty to share my experience to the next generation, so I'm thinking about making some posts/articles (or even... videos) to provide constructive critique for submitted pixel art sprites or tiles.
15 or so years ago I made a series of pixel art tutorials (still on my website), very useful for an introduction to production-pixel-art especially for RPG Maker users. The kind of knowledge that I want to share today is more specific to craft than general tutorials can cover, and there's no way better than direct thoughtful feedback on specific individual pixel placements within their context.
Whether or not this is something that would be done on "patron time" or is something that I would need to fit into my "weekends", that depends on your input to this thread, if it would be a valuable service for patrons to provide these in the place of an occasional asset release.
Either way-- just an idea for now, and I can't do anything without submissions anyway.
And of course, patrons get the first choice, so if any patron is making your own pixel art characters or tiles and you are willing to submit them for some direct scrutiny, send me a message!
Thanks for your time, have a great day! See you later in the week with the next release.
