Hello! Today's update is a little different than usual.

I don't have any new graphics for you today-- instead I'm looking for some more details on what YOU want from an expanded tileset for the beast tribe homelands.

I was looking through the patron requests and saw that this is a really popular one. And its something that people have been asking for ever since the original Beast Tribes pack was announced.

I've previously made a tileset expansion that includes tiles for a orc-type village or fort, and I want to avoid too much overlap with those tiles. I'm not quite sure best how I'd want to structure a tileset of homelands for the various factions from the Beast Tribes set...

Please share with me any specific ideas, requests or suggestions for what you'd like to see in a "beast villages" tileset pack.

If you have specific image references or other ideas, that would be really helpful too!

The Beast Tribes character expansion can be found here: Beast Tribes on itch.io. The five tribes are:

Wolf Men/Kobolds

Cat Men

Lizard Men

Bird Men

Fish Men

I'll be coming back to reference this thread over the next couple of weeks as I start to put this set together, so please feel free to drop any ideas as you think of them.

Thanks!

I'll be back with a regular graphic release for you later this week.

Whatever happened with this?

finalbossblues

these sets were completed and expanded into multiple releases: the fairy forest, the giant tree, and Atlantis tilesets evolved out of this project

Gino

Right on! That makes sense! I'm picking up a project I had to put down for life and playing catch-up with figuring out what I have to work with here. You're doing great bud, keep it up!

How about these for ideas; o Wolfmen – Tudor-English Architecture (Like Gilneas in WoW) o Catmen – Chinese/Japanese Style (As they appear to be wearing Japanese Costumes) o Lizardmen – Aztec/Mayan style (Inspiration; Warhammer Fantasy) o Birdmen – Native American style; (Inspiration; Rito Village) o Fishmen – Underwater style (Inspiration; Zora’s Domain)

Kevin Prothero

I think Stephan has a few points. My original thoughts are listed below: Wolfmen - mongul hordes with sticks and pelts as the primary materials Catmen - Eastern style architecture during feudal eras of thin wood walls/paper Lizardmen - stone housing of some sort since this is where lizards dwell in natural settings Birdmen - Aviaries of some sort with the doors on the roof as opposed to the ground Fishmen - underwater dwellings with woven plant/seaweed walls in stick; river rock base for the houses Maybe one of the cultures could be something akin to elf housing that incorporates dwellings built in the middle of trees? Catmen strike me as the best candidates for this.

Samuel Nolen

Maybe the natural habitat of each animal, mixed with different types of architecture for each tribe.

My thoughts would be. Wolfmen- would live in a wooden fort up against a mountain with a lot of pelts from the creatures they hunt. Lizardmen- I imagine a swamp setting with their houses built under giant trees with vines. That or a dry desert with a almost Aztec looking stone buildings. Birdpeople- If you want to get creative with the bird people I think having them live in a canyon with tons of long wooden bridges and places to perch. But tree houses are probably the first thing that come to mind which would work also. Catmen- I could see what people are talking about with the oriental look. But I can also see cats having a more medieval town with cat themed everything. I always imagine cats as very vain and full of themselves. So I see all their buildings having cat ears, with paw prints everywhere, and just tons of cat looking stuff everywhere. Fishmen- I think of giant coral reefs with seaweed houses with seashell roofs. Maybe some clam lid doors with pearls for decorations on houses or maybe even have them glowing using for underwater lighting. Something else I wouldn't mind seeing is some form of Mushroom houses. Maybe for a new beastmen tribe or worked into one of the others.

The Beard

Ooo something else that I thought of that might be cool for the Catmen. What if they lived in a giant golden Casino Cat themed town, it would be a cool way to implement casino tiles which are always fun in RPGs.

Kazuki

I'd be happy with just more characters for each squad, too! xD

Could we have a water source asset (ie well), a light asset (torch / streetlight), a generic stylised sign (e.g. one resting on the ground somehow) and an "interesting thing" (statue / temple icon / landfeature / moument etc to give the towns a focal point) for each. I realise it's a long list but it will mean we can make settlements that feel like towns and not just collections of houses. Also in terms of existing tilesets: The Lizard aztec/mayan style would fit well with the jungle terrain and (jungle) ruined dungeon sets :) Also the birdmen having houses in the canopy of trees would be awesome and could tie in with the cloud tileset and forest "A" tiles you've already released (to save having to design lots of new tree bases for the buildings) I'm also for the stick and pelt wolfman settlements, oriental catmen (as some of ur existing tiles are already quite medieval) Maybe the fishmen could live in the swampy areas between water and land? Bit like "early life" with primative vine and mud structures? Sorry this was so long, I'm just really excited for this!

k

Also I don't think anyone has suggested underground housing (wolfmen, catmen or lizardmen could live there). If the surface level was like piles of mud / grass with a doorway / couple of windows and then the interior wall tile had a muddy texture maybe with some roots?

Thomas Stallings

Very good ideas everyone are suggesting! Here is another few ideas. Wolf men -viking like settlement. (Fits the sticks and stuff already suggested) catmen -oriental feudal style. Birdmen- tree houses and nest beds inside.(treehouses would be perfect for elves too) lizardmen- desert or jungle Aztec or Egyptian styles( would be great for ruins tilesets) fishmen- mud huts and mud tunnels(would fit Aztec ruins maybe and jungle environments)

Bramble Bear

Perfect for any bathroom. The desert is their toilet.

Bramble Bear

Having some backpacks, particularly those that show case merchants or a caravan would work really well with the catmen.

Newnikko

The ideas presented are very good. For my part, I would see the Wolf Man live in caves. I'd like to know if for the beast heroes, you planned to make faces?

Bramble Bear

There are a lot of nature themed houses in 2k3 RPGmaker tilesets that could be re-purposed. I personally would like to see the wolfmen be more organized in a military functioning society with barracks and a warrior culture similar to Celtic mythos/spartan rule. Having them as a horde doesn't really show them organizing as a pack, or coming together in the way I think of wolves.

Bramble Bear

Viking is a great idea for them thematically in terms of the mythos/pantheon, but that puts them more naval oriented.

Bramble Bear

Underground housing and swamps would fit the lizard men nicely. May I also suggest sort of a hunter gatherer theme to them.

Bramble Bear

Mushroom houses would be a great thing for sprites and faeries. That would definitely be a great suggestion for another time, but I don't see it working for the races listed.

The Beard

I agree it doesn't really fit any of these types of creatures, but instead of little normal sized mushrooms for sprites fairies. I rather have giant mushroom houses for like some kind of weird mushroom men. It could even be a new enemy set with evil mushroom men in their fungus castles or cave or whatever haha.

The Beard

I looked up the tree I was thinking of that fit swamps they are called Mangrove trees. They are in swamps and would make perfect home setting for the lizard men.

Dash

I feel the cats would be hunters so maybe give them woodsey houses

Dash

Also give the birds a mountain house

Dash

And the fish could have a fishing town

Mana Cloud

Soooo, it seems like everyone is assuming that there will be separate tile sets for each beast type (which would be rad.) However if you were trying to put together a single tile set that would accommodate all the beasts, I would suggest something like Esgaroth from the Lord of the Rings. All animals need water, so putting them together in a lake/river town where the fish can live directly in the water while the birds enjoy towers etc. etc. would make sense. I understand the beast have different styles which hearken to their heritage but there's no reason they couldn't all live together. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esgaroth

Dash

I feel that the dogs would have the casino, because of the painting "Dogs Playing Poker"

Mana Cloud

Okay I don't usually do this but here's another one. The beast tribe set is for your Time Fantasy style assets, which is already really heavy with the medieval style content. So what if you did the beast tribe like they are from an apocalyptic future (or past) Their buildings could be retrofitted skeletons of the buildings left by their ancestors. Part fantasy part Mad Max, could be cool, just a thought.

The Beard

Dogs don't exactly have the best poker faces in real life so I always thought that painting was a farce. From my experience with dogs they can always be read like a complete open book! Cats on the other hand are sneaky, nefarious, and vain I could just see them being fat cat casino owners!

Thomas Stallings

This is an idea supporting the animal themes and or a request for an asset. A few people have suggested about tree houses for options and thought perhaps we could have a large tree sprite, like a redwood tree for a base to build a wood platform and or tree house around. We wouldn't necessarily need the whole tree but at least a middle trunk section that we could use to simulate that the platforms bridges and houses are in a tree canopy. Just a thought.

Strijdparel

Or Zootopia form the Disney Movie :)

Zach

What about some underwater tiles, like an Atlantis type city? It could have some technology or magic for why it's able to be underwater.

Thomas Stallings

That would be very cool for the fish people!

DarkGriffin

The time fantasy set and the addons for that already cover most of the base "castles, cliffs, bridges, magical, nature, and dungeons" of medieval style RPGS. Farm and Fort can be combined to build most of the more "primitive" normal dwellings, so long as humans were the ones that built it, and so long as said dwelling is above ground. I think the beast tribes tileset would thus be a focus on more "primitive style" or "beastly/animal/tribal" decorations, with a large emphisis on "unique or unusual locations to live in nature", such as underground, in tree tops, underwater, ect. Nest-like decoration/bed tiles for bird and beasts, made of hay, grass, or leaves. Maybe a couple beds made of dug out stone in a cave wall, or piled/arranged blankets on the floor of a cave. Thin beams to pose as perches for birds, or as scaffolding for cats/heros to run across between rooftops. Lots of these could do double duty for non-beast rpgs as well. The other angle would be to focus on unique "beast like" decorations. Things themed to each "race" that would help identify who lives in the dwelling, and express a bit of that beast's unique traits. Maybe the wolf men/kobolds have some primitive cavern wall torches, and other underground living decorations. The cats might have elaborate cat themed decorations, or signs with cat ears on them. Maybe some sandboxes, and amusing tribal toys like sticks with stringed up feathers on the end. (Like a cat toy in our world, but in primitive tribal style.) Lizards could have a focus on alchemical tools to make use of medicines/poisons. We have a lot of jars and storage decorations, but it could be cool to have some more "primitive science/alchemy" props. Bird men can have some feather/indian themed wall decorations, and maybe some astrological tools such as telescopes or star charts. Fish men would have strange underwater containers such as clams or round orb-like chests. Maybe some underwater glowing orbs used for light. While the decorations would be intended to match with a certain beast race, they could also just drop into a normal human town to create one "obsessed with a theme", or users could mix them up to create "their own" version of the beasts. Looking over the comments so far, a lot of different takes on how the beasts behave and the level of their civilization has been mentioned. So I think it best to keep the tileset itself highly mixable. Lean on the "beast" part for themes/ideas and keep things flexible.

DarkGriffin

One additional idea I had is that of "totems", or "symbols" for the beasts. This could of course represent each race, but could also be used outside the pack for human tribes. ("Tribe of the Wolf, The Cat, and so on.) Ideally these totems would also come in stackable form, allowing both story stacking and also to represent multiple races living in harmony. This set could provide a great story telling prop for tribal like storylines, beast races or not. Especially if combined with some banners with matching symbolism.

DarkGriffin

I'd also love to have a small assortment of "animal scratch marks", "beast claws, stray feathers, stray scales, clump of fur, that sort of thing. These would be designed to overlay the floor or wall tiles of existing tilesets. It's a common theme among animals to "mark" their territories or leave evidence of "what beast did this" in RPGs, and for heros to then "track them". These would be designed around each of the beast races of course, but can also be mixed with the normal monsters and the rest of the tile/character set to tell "hunter" stories or survival/horror. Damaging the walls of castles/spaceships, combine with bodies or bones on the ground, that sort of thing. I think this would be a great add on for really connecting the towns/tilesets we have and the existence of these monsters together. We could use such markings to really tell the player some history of where the beasts have been, or hint to them what they might encounter next, or just to build some mystery or story lore into the world.

Strijdparel

Maybe for especially for the bird people a 'build your own totempole' construction of a totem pole with all kinds of diffrent birds, like an owl, an eagle, a raven, a vulture, and that sort of stuff. It could also work for all other tribes (for the cats for example: Lions, cheetas, tigers, panthers, lynx and so on).
