Hello! I have a special update for patrons today regarding the upcoming Exotic Lands tileset pack that I've been working on.First-- this is the second update today. If you didn't see this morning's release, you can find it here: New and Improved Bamboo Forest.

Now-- here's a preview of the two completed tilesets-- Atlantis and the Giant Tree:

( In your game, the giant tree tileset would work better split onto a separate map for the upper parts, against a sky backdrop. But for the preview image, I just did it this way to show off the available tiles. )

There's also another entire tileset for the inside of the giant tree (I've shown an early version of that in a previous update), and the atlantis tileset is arranged so the walls can make ceilings to create interior areas as well.

I've also gotten a lot of work done so far on the Japan-Land tileset. Here's a preview of that:

There's a little more to go still: I want some more building variations, so you can make multi-level Japanese-style castles. And of course, I'll need to make some sort of Japan-styled interior tileset, including paper walls and sliding doors.

That's all that I need to make to call the set officially finished-- and it should only take me another 2-3 days. Meaning that I am on track to release the full pack this week, right on schedule!

BUT...

This is what I've been thinking, and I'd like your input on this idea:

There's potential for the Japan-land tileset to be a lot more expansive. Right now its fairly basic, a single tileset that's made to be included with the others in the exotic lands set.

There's enough potential content for the Japan set to become its own expansion.

A bigger stand-alone Japan set would have room for things like: bonsai trees, buddhist temples, koi ponds, shrines, bridges, more interior options, more variations for buildings and castles, etc. I also have content that could be included because it matches the theme-- like the Ninja and Samurai sprites + battlers.

If that's an idea that people like, then the question becomes: what about the Atlantis and Giant Tree sets? They would be released separately as well. But they're more or less complete as they are-- and they'd be released as special expansion packs-- probably one as a free download (like the Beach, Dark Dimension, etc) and one as a patron download (like Lich Crusades or Mythical Bosses).

I'd be able to release the Atlantis and Giant Tree sets immediately, while the Japan set would be delayed by another month or so while I continue to work on it.

Please let me know your thoughts on this.

I want to deliver the content that you guys want! So your comments will inform the decision I make over the next couple of days. Either way-- you'll have some sort of big tileset release later this week.

Thank you!

I like the idea of expanding the set and releasing it later.

Japan: Delay and expand. Atlantis & Tree: Release and rejoice.

Arcmagik

I agree. Release the Atlantis/Giant Tree set to Patron and expand the Japanese themed set to a full expansion.

Baz

definitely can delay japan for instant tilesets xD

Ryan Williamson

I definitely like the idea of expanding the Japan set!

Tiff

N'thing what everyone else has said :)

mishakoc

Your ideas for expanding the tileset sound great, I don't think anyone would complain about it taking more time to finish. Looking forward to all of the tilesets!

Scott

Ditto

Stephan Liennard

Having the Japan set as a seperate release is definately the better idea; the cultural basis is too rich to be confined to a small release!

Hey, if the choice is between taking more time to make a better product and releasing something satisfactory but not as good as it can be, I think the choice is clear.

Dungeonmind

I don't mind you focus on the Japan set separately and the trees and Atlantis as its own thing. Seems like it makes the most sense.

Xeri

Great job! I'm in agreement with everyone else on the release of the Japanese set later. Are there any monsters or NPC sprites that could go with the Atlantis set?

Rubenyeahhh

First of all, what you have made up until now looks fantastic! As the Japanese-themed set will definitely be my favorite that would get a lot of 'screentime' in my game, I'd LOVE to have more variations, interior tiles and details for it. And I'd be happy to wait a little longer :)

Mirroring the sentiments above: These look super legit. I would prefer the Giant Tree and Atlantis to come now with an expanded Feudal East Set later. Keep up the great work!

The Beard

Yep they look great! Expand the Japanese set would love to see some Zen gardens with Koi ponds and little stone bridges with those stone lanterns you made!

Jump Game Studio

Gonna go against the grain here: Release everything you finish up this week. Expand the japan set over time on patreon and THEN re-release the expanded japan set as its own pack. I think it's better than dragging it out and missing out on all the juicy requests waiting in the Request Thread. :)

Strijdparel

I think everybody is in agreement, I also think a bigger Japan set would be very cool, and would not mind waiting an other month or so. I do have some request's and or ideas for the expansion. Some ideas for characters: a Tengu warrior, Byakko (White tiger), Kyuubi (Nine taled fox), Raccoon dog (Tanuki), Seiryu or Ryu (Chineese/ Japanese dragon) Some ideas for icons: Japanese armour, Kimono, headband, Strawheads (the conical ones), Katanas, Shurikens, hand fans, hair pins, poki, Maneki neko (lucky cat), buddha Some ideas for tile sets: Cherry tree, Buddha statues big and small, Katana sword holders or bow or lance holders for on the ground or on the wall, poster for on wall with japanese letters, Weapon and Armour stuff for in shops to display

Snoozish

Agree with Sudo, releasing the japan stuff and then adding to it later based on feedback.

Zach

Everyone says to take your time and expand, I agree.

Hi Jason! I'm actually working on a title based in Japan so having an expansive asset pack would be extremely valuable. I'm glad to hear this is in the works. Eventually having characters and battlers from medieval and mythological Japan would be amazing as well. Gods, demons, multi-tailed animals, etc.

Bramble Bear

Japan land needs pandas, despite being from China. Also a serpent dragon would be nice.
