Hello! Today I have something new, and I think it's pretty cool...

The other day, I was reading through the request thread to pick something to make for today's release. One idea caught my eye, and it got me thinking... see, for something like this, we already have all the tiles... in fact, we have a lot more than we'd need. There's thousands of tiles we've already made that could be mixed and matched and re-combined to create new environments.

I combined a bunch of previous tiles from a variety of sets, did some edits so they would match together, spent some time organizing them into a new set, and then of course came up with a new color scheme to bring them together. Overall, the process only took me a couple of hours, so it feels like a huge amount of content for the same time I'd spend on a much smaller request.

Can you recognize all the tiles from their original Time Fantasy releases? ;)

There are tons of possible biomes that could be made in this way. I think this approach will work well for small unique variant areas that could give your game a little boost of variety. Like imagine going through a normal cave dungeon and then there's a small stretch of rooms at the bottom that use a variant tileset like this... and that's where the boss is waiting!

Downloads:

Bioluminescent Caves Tileset - 100% (16x16)

Bioluminescent Caves Tileset - 200% (RMVX)

Bioluminescent Caves Tileset - 300% (MV/MZ)

Note: These sheets are kinda in an RPGMaker format-- but not entirely. They're arranged in an A5 sheet, but the tiles with transparency should be on a B-layer sheet. Like my normal add-on sets, they're arranged so you can easily add them to existing tilesheets.

Let me know if you'd be interested in more things like this.

Or maybe it's not something that I should be doing; leave these sorts of edits and re-colors to others while I focus on fresh pixels. If you think this kind of release is a cheat, I'd understand that too-- so I want to know what you think.

I'll be back later in the week with something new. See you soon.

Thanks!

I think it's cool. While we have so many tiles to choose from on our own, it's not always easy for all of us to come up with unique variants like this. I'd support more remix releases like this!

Jump Game Studio

also this looks like TF Jungle, Dark Dungeon, and Fairy Forest. Am i right? ;)

Zemonica

i don't think this is cheating, but it won't be useful to me personally since i recolor and edit the tiles myself

Love this tileset

I find this very interesting personally! As long as you combine it with new releases too, I think it's a great idea and will bring more value and variety to the work you've already done.

Shaun

I think this is really cool!

Woahhhh! This is exactly what I was imagining, and more! It'll look so cool when the characters get to a deeper cavern section, and just adds some more variation and a mystical ambience. Thanks so much!

Dave

This is so cool. The amount of variety we can create in our games with your stuff is just unreal.

Dario

it's great! Some remix with new stuff is alway welcome^^

I'm definitely down for a collection of recolors/edits, especially if the combinations are done in really creative ways. At the very least, it serves to give inspiration to game makers in how to approach "kitbashing" or otherwise combining and editing tiles.

I've been trying to think what other kinds of biomes might work. Any thoughts? Maybe a swampy one to go with that new mangrove tree? An indoor swampy dungeon to go with the Watcher character might work too. Are there ice caves? Can't remember if this is part of the Winter Tiles or not. Perhaps some kind of Dark Woods would be cool too, and a kind of Viking setting one with colder greens than the regular grass? A kind of nuked landscape would be neat for the Future Fantasy tiles too.
