If you want to see two great Michael Mann films, checkout Heat and Collateral. Heat is a crime drama starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer. Collateral is an action thriller starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx (was nominated for his performance in Collateral).

If you want to checkout other Daniel Day Lewis films, checkout My Left Foot, In The Name of the Father, Gangs of New York, There Will Be Blood, and Lincoln.

The best Michael Mann film ever made is Heat (1995). For some reason, I thought you had seen Heat until I just looked. It's one of those movies that I recommend to everyone.

Mary, the Huron and the Mohawk had been rivals and belligerents for many centuries before the white folks showed up. When battle lines were drawn, the tribes sided with whomever they felt could advance their particular interests. The events of the film are set in New York state, in the Adirondack Mountains, filmed in North Carolina, in the smoky mountains. While the story itself is fictional, it is well rooted in the reality of that time period. The siege of fort william henry was accurately depicted, as was the massacre of the british and civilians after they vacated the fort by the huron. LTC Munro was in fact, the real british officer in charge of the fort. He survived the attack after the surrender but died of a stroke a few months later in Albany. The real LTC Munro never married and never had children.

Watching your reaction to MI2 and your excitement about Sydney, I have a similar reaction to this film. It takes place in upstate New York, where I grew up (actual filming I believe took place in Smoky Mountains Nation Park, but the geography is very similar). You hear these native names: Cayuga, Mohawk, Algonquin, Huron and so on. All of this history was taught to us in primary. The Iroquois Federation was actually the world's first democracy, and it was governed primarily by the women of the tribes. Okay, now the war parts. All I can say is there's a reason New York state's flag is stomping on a British crown. This war being fought is globally known as the Seven Years War but here we called it the French and Indian War. It's the precursor the American Revolution. The French would go on to lose the War leaving our original colonies and the natives under British rule. When the British Empire levied heavy taxes on its colonies to pay for the debts from this war, that's what sparked the American Revolution who (ironically) ally with the French to win. The whole treating the Colonials like sh*t really came back to bite them in the ass. Aside from being one of the few films to cover this war, I see it as a tragic precursor. I remember watching Dances With Wolves and your reaction. No matter who was in charge, the American-Indian's always ended up on the short end of the stick. The gradual western expansion from the Atlantic States to the Pacific Ocean destroyed so many tribes, just like with the Mohicans. And it would take up until the 1900s until that destruction was complete, and the last remaining native tribes were moved onto reservations. It's not much but their legacy and history lives on. Uncas and Alice had a heartbreaking ending, but also I'm grateful for it. Entire tribes of people were wiped out. There were thousands of romances and families like Uncas and Alice who died because of the expansion of white guys with guns. I believe strongly that this story needed to keep that message. Beautiful story and a fun watch. Keep it real Mary.

Glad you liked it Mary. This is one of my favorite movies. Also good job picking up on the romance between Alice and Uncas since it's all non verbal and them looking at each other. Lot of people miss that. To answer your question this movie takes place in upstate New York, basically the border between the US and Canada. Now that you mentioned it, the volume is really weird in this movie. The talking is so quiet, so you have to turn the sound up to max, but then the explosions and music are super loud. Even watching on DVD back in the day I always thought the talking volume was super quiet. Somebody in the sound mixing department did not do their job on this movie. As others have mentioned the other great Michael Mann movies are "Heat" (1995) and "Collateral" 2004. Both of those movies, like this one have very beautiful endings. In my opinion Collateral is one of the best Tom Cruise movies.

I did the same thing, I thought she reacted to Heat. I think it's because so many people have reacted to that movie in the last few months, because of Val Kilmer's passing.

David Bennett

to be honest, a LOT of modern films have that strange up and down and up and down volume crap. If you don't have a fancy surround sound system (AKA ME), it can get REALLY irritating to have to fumble with the remote when shit gets super quiet or super loud. I wish the sound designers would take that in to account when doing their thing......

If you like this you’d love Legends of the Fall. Highly recommend. 🍻

My favourite Michael Mann film is ‘The Insider’. Russell Crow, Al Pacino. You’d love it. 🍻

When you mention "cherry on top" was that an accidental pun? The British military had a nasty superioriy complex at the time as in their famous phrase :"The sun never sets on the British. empire!" which is why the American revolution shocked the world that they were defeated, aided by the French. So we have a nice love story combined the harsh reality of how violent this time was.
