My all-time fav! Great reaction!

Leonard Nimoy was a known environmentalist. Always fun to see the Star Trek crew galavanting around in 20th century earth. The actor who plays Spock's father, the late Mark Lenard, and Leonard Nimoy were very close friends in real life. Very funny seeing McCoy gasping at the primitive medical practices of the 20 the 20th Century. Alas, SF has gone way downhill since this film was shot there.

I remember LOVING this one as a kid! I loved the "fish out of water" element of seeing Star Trek characters interacting with contempary (for the time I first saw it) society. And whales. The whales were awesome.

(By the way, I cannot get to your ST3 reaction as it is marked as private.) [Sprinkle smileys liberally:] 2:06 "With great microphones." Great enough to be able to capture sound in space! 2:14 I know, right? Can you imagine wanting to sit back and enjoy a movie, but there would be a camera in your face recording your every reaction?! 5:25 "He could have been Khan!" He just oozes charisma, doesn't he? And given your motivation for that statement, perhaps you should stay far, far away from the new movies! 9:13 "Computations for time warp"? It seems pretty simple! It's just a jump to the left... 10:45 "I want to time travel." Congratulations, reaction-Mary! You have now safely time traveled [something like] one month into the future! 11:13 "Will they be like ... sperm?" Of course. Sperm ... whales! 12:15 "Scotty said no." And Scotty oughta know, Scotty oughta know, Scotty oughta know. 12:41 "Terra incognita." Yes, Kirk, we see what you did there. 13:44 I am reminded of this clip, "The smartest Batman goon ever": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMd4S-LkywI 15:37 OMG Pavel, you can't just ask people where their nuclear wessels are! 16:34 "Do they not know what music is?" That is precisely the question being pondered by Kirk and Spock. 27:12 Ba-dumm-tss! 27:25 "So he gets the pizza then." Come on, it's the least she can do for this crazy homeless man. 34:11 'There be whales here!" Whales! In! Space! 37:08 The anti- Peter Principle.

Three clips (pictures) from the Mad Magazine "spoof" of this movie: https://ibb.co/album/dB2T1N Not directly related to this movie: Sarah Brightman's version of Captain Nemo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOtkVo3oXjo Leaving off with a positive thought: the "Save the Whales" campaign worked. This focused practical conservation effort was a great success; the humpback whale population has rebounded, is continuing to improve, and is now out of danger.

"(By the way, I cannot get to your ST3 reaction as it is marked as private.)" And I can now get to it. Thanks.

Here's an excerpt from the (official) novelization of the movie, "translating" the conversation between the probe and the two whales: https://pastebin.com/zcuJ0kfX ADDED: Credit to "urbanotter 1968." The successful novelization was written by Vonda N. McIntyre.

hype link. i felt like i finally got closure after all these decades. they are alone now, i cried.

Much of the comedy in the movie derives from the crew finding themselves in unfamiliar surroundings, akin to ... a fish out of water. (I'm sorry. And yes, I know.)

Glad Mary enjoyed it! I'll offer some (hopefully) interesting side notes: * Formerly U.S.S.R. actually allowed this movie to be shown! * Consistent with Star Trek's story to contemporary allegory, whale hunting was a big issue. This movie made a lot of impact around the world as it was the highest grossing prior to 2009. Today, Humpback whales are long removed from the endangered species list. * Scotty voice commanding the first generation (1984) Apple Macintosh is really funny because voice control not possible on retail computers. * The replacement U.S.S. Enterprise as registry NCC-1701-A. This is the third iteration of the Enterprise. The original TOS 1701 Enterprise is just called "TOS Enterprise". The first movie - The Motion Picture - has visibly non-round nacelles and is known as "Enterprise Refit". This replacement is called "Enterprise-A". If you continue your journey, you'll iterations of Enterprise ships that follows "Enterprise-" format.

Reportedly, this film has been credited for saving the whale population. Interesting that we got both parents from “7th Heaven” in “Star Trek” films. My Mom and sister used to watch that show back in the day. It was good until Jessica Biel left and the dad started having hallucinations he was Elvis.
