DOUGLAS M. WHITE II

I think that Iris left the fort mostly, because she was already dying of cancer and knew it was the only way for Stefani would believe it was real. Also, FUCK that kid...everyone laughed and cheered when he went splat.

Okay so, flashing my lifeguard and EMT credentials on the Hollywood drowning myth and why it fools most audiences (but first RIP Tony Todd). Now the myth that got Mary and so many others: "CPR alone cannot restart a stopped heart or bring someone back from cardiac arrest, but it is crucial for keeping blood flowing to vital organs until advanced medical help arrives. Combining CPR with defibrillation from an AED significantly increases the chances of survival." When defibrillators became automated it was a big win. They are portable, we see them everywhere. We no longer needed to rely on the bulkier manual defibrillators carried on ambulances to bring someone back from either cardiac arrest or a stopped heart, both of which can happen from a prolonged drowning. What gets often mistaken is the treatment for an unconscious person (be it with a heartbeat or without) looks very similar. With a drowning we're hoping they were rescued in time and CPR was initiated immediately to just get the water out of their lungs. If we avoided cardiac arrest then they will recover and begin breathing and regain consciousness. We're giving their body and their heart the time it needs to do damage control. A metaphor? Use a fire extinguisher on a stove to keep a fire from spreading and doing more damage. Just like with a drowning victim and a kitchen fire, if you can get to them in time you won't need to shock the person or call the fire department to try and stop your entire house from burning down. Stefani was in danger but think kitchen fire danger since her brother was able to bring her back with just CPR. Her heart's rhythm didn't need to be reset and it never stopped beating. So while Stefani's bro certainly saved her from dying, she was still never technically dead. Unlike in FD2. In FD2 with Beckie (who drove that ambulance into the cold lake trying to kill herself), her drowning lasted much longer to the point of her heart either going into cardiac arrest or there was no heartbeat at all. The only way to save her would be to shock her with a defibrillator, and with a hospital and ER right there they were able to do that in time. But if they were just a few seconds off? She could've died. As Bludworth said, it's very risky (RIP Tony Todd). By now its too late for medical professionals to try and extinguish the myth of saving someone without a heartbeat with CPR alone. But I think it works in a movie like Final Destination. Was fun to see Mary's surprised reaction!
