This movie is absolute chaos and I absolutely love every second of it. John Belushi was such a comedy icon that we lost way too soon. RIP. Also, still can’t believe that this was Kevin Bacon’s first movie. It’s so surreal seeing him in this. 😅

This was a smash hit low-budget phenomenon when it came out with a budget of just $3 million but grossing over $140 million worldwide. The cast, other than John Belushi who died of a drug overdose on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, was relatively unknown. Katy, played by Karen Allen catapulted to fame as Marion Ravenwood in the Indiana Jones franchise. Adam here already mentioned Kevin Bacon. Tom Hulce was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Amadeus (Mozart), Peter Riegart "Boon" too many film and TV credits to mention (The Mask), Director John Landis is a legend in Hollywood -- mostly for television but in film also "The Mask". Core audience was males 18 - 35 "drunk" on the theme of frat house hijinks. Like duh.

Paul Rich

The military in college campuses is called the R.O.T.C. for Reserve Officers Training Corp. including all branches of the military. Animal House was released in 1978 shortly after the Viet Nam war when sentiment was not high for the military. Not like it is now in 2026 after the U.S. bombed the terrorist regime inside Iran keeping it from going nuclear and a threat to the world.

I'll add here that ROTC was a program to help pay for the costs of college. ROTC was a contract where you agreed to serve as a commissioned officer for a number of years after graduation. Military service and the draft were growing concerns at that time. '62 was a time of increasing tensions in South East Asia and the US had just started to increase their "advisory" presence in Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin incident that was the pretext for the US's increased involvement was just 2 years away.

Paul Rich

True, Marvin. In 1962 the fear of communist encroachment in south east Asia was very real following the Korean War. Depicting the ROTC as cartoon bad guys was a modernist depiction coinciding with the war protests following the Viet Nam war. But it worked for the comedy.

Other great comedy movies to suggest Tommy Boy (1995) and Black Sheep (1996)
