One of my favorite Scorsese films is actually a sequel to the The Hustler called The Color of Money. The film stars Paul Newman (his Oscar winning role; was also nominated for Best Actor in The Hustler as well) and Tom Cruise. Highly recommend both of these films. The Hustler (1961) follows an up and coming pool player, Fast Eddie Felson, trying to be on top of his game and Scorsese’s sequel, The Color of Money (1986) follows Fast Eddie Felson’s story 25 years later. Also, it’s better if you watch The Hustler first because everything he experienced in The Hustler gives you the backstory of why Eddie makes the decisions he does in The Color of Money and makes the film better.

The slur "wop" was supposedly an acronym for "With Out Papers", implying that some Italian immigrants were illegal. "Guinea" is an even more racist term, I don't even want to tell you what it supposedly means. There's an infamous scene in a great movie I HAVE TO recommend, written by Quentin Tarantino but directed by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Crimson Tide), "True Romance", in which you see how gangsterism and racism are two examples of the same in group/out group stuff they talk about in Sociology classes. And the rule about how you have to be 100% Italian to be Made, is because they look at your family history for any snitches, the idea is that snitching runs in families. Ironically, it was snitching that brought the Italian mob down in the end. That said lol, now you have to watch "Casino", it's the spiritual, but not actual, sequel to Goodfellas.

This is going to probably sound silly, but I look at Goodfellas and The Godfather like The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Scorsese’s movie is like The Rolling Stones. It’s gritty, raw, no-frills, and steers clear of any romanticism or idealism. Coppola’s movie is like The Beatles. It’s very beautiful and yet has an edge, but it’s beautifully cloaked in this seductive, elegant cloak. It’s very eclectic and embraces the idealism and romanticism of even the darkness. One wants to hold your hand. One can’t get no satisfaction. One says all you need is love. The other says you can’t always get what you want. One says take a sad song and make it better. The other says wild horses couldn’t drag me away. Full disclosure: The Beatles are my favorite band, but I love The Rolling Stones, too. I need them both in my life just as I need Goodfellas and The Godfather. Excellent review as always, Mary! You are the BEST. 🍒

We all need to watch "My Blue Heaven" now. It's got Steve Martin as Henry Hill but this time it's a comedy.
