I think this movie is very underrated. The last 40 minutes are so good.

If you want to see Gary Busey best acting performance, got to checkout The Buddy Holly Story. It is Gary’s only Oscar nomination and it was for Best Actor. He played 50’s Rock n Roll legend Buddy Holly in the film. Gary also does all of his own signing and guitar playing in the film. He absolutely amazing in that film.

It's been years since I've seen this Mary and I agree with your take on this, somebody younger might have been a better fit than Danny Glover. Although Glover is 6 foot 4 inches tall (1.93 m) so he is a big guy and he has the physical presence. But I couldn't stop seeing the old guy from Lethal Weapon. I didn't buy him taking on a Predator and winning. I agree it seemed like a bit of plot armor. Why was the lady cop's (Leona) pregnancy mentioned you ask? Answer, the Predator was about to kill her, but with his fancy mask it saw that she was pregnant. I guess it's a bad look for a Predator to kill pregnant women. So the Predator let her live. There's a deleted scene where the female officer Leona starts becoming friends with annoying cop Jerry and confides to him that she's several months pregnant. Jerry immediately drops his tough guy act and starts being much nicer. This deleted scene helps explain why Jerry was willing to give his life to save Leona, who at that point he only knew for a week. Shame they deleted that scene, it would have made Bill Paxton's character Jerry more likable. Reminder, the late Bill Paxton was in Aliens, Apollo 13, and Tombstone. Bill Paxton bragged that he's the only actor to be killed by a terminator, and Alien, and a Predator. He was in terminator 1 for like 30 seconds. You were correct about this being a dystopian movie, it was made in 1990 but set in 1997. So they made it into a near future hyper violent version of LA. Kind of like Robocop, near futuristic but super violent.

So as to your question about living in a city with this much gun violence? Hopefully not in the US anytime soon but aside from the grenade and rocket launchers every gun in that movie you can own here legally (or some variant of). The plot armor bit when Bill Paxton's Jerry was shooting the Predator in the subway and nothing happened, his sidearm was a pistol. Maybe .45 caliber, which was the same caliber pistols we were seeing them use in Aliens and they didn't have much effect. But when Danny Glover was shooting it was with a shotgun small enough to hang from the belt like you would a pistol. It still took multiple shots but it was doing a lot more damage than the pistol had, which ironically we saw in the movie Aliens because Hicks briefly had a shotgun and was doing a lot of damage to the aliens with it. It's still plot armor and after that moment the suspense wavered off and never really came back. In fact it seemed more of a comedy by the end there what with Jeopardy playing in the background while the Predator is in the bathroom. I half expected it to drop trousers and pinch one off. Lastly, the Predator mythos does have rules and what prey is acceptable to hunt and which isn't. In AVP we see one of the predators spare Lance Henrikson at first because he had a weak heart and was too feeble to consider a worthy trophy. Likewise with pregnancy. The Predator was about to kill Leona because she was just as much a badass as the others - but when it used its vision to zoom in on her and see she was with child, that meant she was no longer allowed to be killed by Predator society. It would even be seen as dishonorable to do so. Can't wait to see your Prey reaction. When you watch Prey remember the pistol that Mike got there at the end and be sure to watch Prey's end credits scene. TYVM for a great reaction video!
