Gene Wilder was a natural comedic talent. His films with Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein) are classics that would difficult to make today. Blazing Saddles would not be made at all.

Young Frankenstein is a Wilder/Brooks must. Excellent, excellent.

You should watch Wonka 2023

Happy Hanukkah

26:39 Well, when an old creep insinuatingly asks: "Would you like to see?"... 28:53 In which we play the fun game: Is that Mary or Veruca? :-)

It only occurred to me now how Gene Wilder's acting in this is almost an exercise in contrastive acting: his lines are very often delivered in a way completely opposite to their actual meaning. (Foremost example: "Help. Police. Murder." But also e.g. 28:40)

I love this movie and have since I was a kid. I have jokingly said that if you dislike this film I can’t be friends with you. 😉 Gene Wilder simply was brilliant. He improvised the limp walk and told the producers he wanted to have Wonka do that to have people think he had difficulty walking, then he would do a somersault and let them know he was fine. The reason? So that the people and audience would have to guess whether he was lying or not. He also improvised the singing on the psychedelic boat ride and the speech afterwards. The other cast members’ faces were genuine. They had no idea what he was going to do. I believe Wonka had a plan and he deliberately chose the kids he wanted and secretly knew that Charlie was the best one of the bunch. I think Slugworth/Wilkinson scouted the kids and reported back to Wonka. I really admire Charlie and on a personal note, that used to be me. I was that kid. And I’m ashamed to say that at some point as I got older I began to become more like those other kids at times. Ok, maybe not AS bratty as them, but I have had my moments. 😔 When Charlie gives Wonka the Everlasting Gobstopper it gets to me. He’s such an unselfish, good kid and he could have easily told Wonka to bugger off, but he didn’t. Gene Wilder reportedly was very concerned about how Peter Ostrom would react because he really let him have it in that scene. Wilder knew he was just acting, but was tempted to say to Ostrom, “I have to be cruel to you here, but please don’t think I’m mad at you”, but he didn’t. There are certain roles that people were born to play. Gene Wilder was born to play Willy Wonka. I’m sorry, but no one will ever come close. He has a bit of a mischievous delight in seeing the kids suffer, but in the end when he’s with Charlie, I think that’s more Gene Wilder than Willy Wonka.

A few of my favorite things about the Willy Wonka film. Willy’s appearance at the beginning where he’s seen limping was Genes idea. Nobody knew Willy was gonna come out like that so the reactions were real. Same goes for the boat scene. None of the case knew Gene was gonna become so unhinged. Their reactions especially the kids was genuine 😆

I'm confused. Where is the full version reaction? I searched and can't find it?

John Cranberry

Mate, where is the full version? Is there one?
