wouldnt call it luck! low negativity is a direct product of the positive environment and community fostered. Full credit to y'all. And I guess a question: what do you look for most in judging dioramas beyond the overall painting

OmegonEdge

I you get Abra confused with Pikachu again ill find you Henry!

I love these little chats. A question on colour choice and themes. I get that we all have preferred colours and tones but, when appapproaching a project, is there anything in particular that makes you decide on a particular scheme or even theme for a piece? Is it inspiration from other things you've seen, or do you just look at a mini and think, this would look awesome in purple? I personally take a lot of inspiration from others work. Andy's diorama for example, I found quite evocative and it had me sat day dreaming about the healing of the deer for hours, which evolved into me now doing a "guardian of the forrest" themed knight house, to ally with my wolves. So thanks mate. 😘

Really enjoying the new pod, and the patreon sections. Couple of questions - can we please have some LOTR stuff when the new box is out? Some Rohan and Dunland a la Cult would be sweet. Also I've really wanted to try painting with strong directional sunlight for a while and really don't know where to start (similar in style to Erik Swinson or Thibaut Rahm). Are there any tips and tricks? I feel like greens and oranges would be fine, but what about blues and blacks? Thanks guys

Jens Schneider

Thanks guys! I greatly enjoy these Patreon Only episodes. Question for next episode: I was wondering if you could share how you got started as a company and when each of you decided to go full time. Oh and Henry, if there’s any way to fit it in… please paint the Necromunda Squats they revealed a few days ago, those mining suit wearing ones. They are just glorious! Have a lovely weekend guys!

Rob Cass

Awesome video guys - really appreciate your honest, forthright and well thought through views. Your next drinking assignment is to try (if you haven't already) bourbon bourbon: it's whiskey distilled with Bourbon biscuits...what's not to like?! Some questions for the next episode: (1) another vote for Jens' question about the Cult of Paint 'origin story' - it's always great to get a peak behind the curtain, so to speak; (2) how, if at all, has going full time pro with CoP affected your enjoyment of the hobby? I think most of us Patreon subscribers are happiest when you guys are doing projects you love, but there is a concern that things like the GW release schedule and the pressures of the YouTube algorithm might feel a bit treadmill-ish for you both. And (3): a bit of a silly question this, but is there a technical reason why GW is unable to label sprue pieces in number order? I don't give a cr*p about what numbers are next to each other in the instruction booklet, but it would be nice not to have to hunt around on the frames, and it seems like it would be as easy to print one number as another in the plastic. Looking forward to your GD coverage, and very curious about the Gundam idea if it makes it into your plans... Cheers!

OmegonEdge

Great video as always guys. Helps to see your candour and honesty. Few of questions. 1. How do you go about developing your own style, were there any people who important influences in this area? 2. How important is drawing and traditional knowledge of art in miniature painting? 3. What area of growth are you most excited for in the community at the moment? Thanks for all your hard work and the community you’ve built!

Dungeons and Dry Gins

Hello chaps! I'm glad to hear you're both gin enjoyers, hopefully we can grab a G&T at MPO Bristol 😉 I was wondering if Andy could talk a little about using references. I try to use real-world references as much as possible but the results can come out very dull (especially since I'm painting under a bright lamp) how do you strike the balance between accuracy to the reference and looking appealing in-hand?

Joseph Precise

The contrast bit was interesting. When it comes to Instagram I almost starting to prefer accounts with raw pictures and out of focus work benches in the background because things are starting to looks very staged. This seems to be trickling down, people handing out over complicated advice to achieve a look made for social media vs successfully painting a army. Curious if you guys have any fun, not per say shortcuts, but any technique or product you like that achieves a similar goal to something you see often being made out highly complicated in your casual painting.

Alex Paints

Thank you so much for the full answer on the painting-the-shadows question - really good to know, and great to have a more firm answer! :)

Andy you mentioned private coaching is this still a thing you and or Henry do? And if so how would I get a lesson? Great chat. I chuckled about the “negative” comments. I get them on my personal hobby insta stuff, clearly not on the same level as your stuff but still very relatable I often rage and I’m like WTF? lol. Nice that you touched on the gaming side of stuff too. I like to play smaller games of 40k, as an “old timer” I often wonder why folks get hung up on rules and point sizes for games, I find larger games these days takes simply too long with other family commitments. Keep up the great work lads.

Barbatos Rex on YouTube does loads of product comparisons and is very scale model and gundam focused. From a variety of his videos I've gleaned that the paint in tamiya rattle cans is the same as the lacquer paints they sell. He also pointed out that lacquer paints being based on such strong solvent it melts any grease or whatever so it adheres in a way that water based primers don't. I agree with Henry's downsides but have been experimenting with tamiya or Mr color lacquers. As undercoats they work well and crucialy are really fine so they're not building up thick layers. This allows for doing really complex undercoats with airbrush blends. I have been doing some gundam to learn from Adam Wilders books. Lacquer paints are better here as rattle cans are often too thick for the bigger scale details. Also with regards using as an undercoat the normal lacquer thinners are worth considering as they will make the paint dry less gloss compared to the self levelling thinners. Sorry for the essay but I thought it could be relevant to some of the content and possibly relevant if you do a gundam project.

Loving these shorter podcast episodes. You mentioned Andy was waiting for a lot of dwarves, has he gone in for the Spira wood dwarves?

Piers Meagher

Great Podcast chaps. Couple of Old World questions. 1) would Henry share the secrets of basing his dwarves 2) any tips for keeping subassemblies correctly orientated to a light source. E.G. great weapons or shields. Many thanks for the great content. PS Ak Microfiller and primer (Lacquer based) is excellent but is also poisonous as all hell, haven’t tried the Mr. Surfacer one.

One more question for the next Cult Catch-Up: Do you (or anyone else here for that matter) have a recommendation for high quality synthetic brushes? Was wondering if there is anything synthetic out there that comes somewhat close to sable brushes as animal hair products are not an option for me.

Tabletop Saga

May I ask a golden demon related question? I have to be careful how I word this, as I don’t want to denigrate any entries! Kevin Kotthaus won bronze in large mini or vehicle with a dark angels land speeder. To my eye it ‘just’ looks like a well painted ‘eavy metal mini and I can’t see what separates it from the other entries that didn’t get a demon. Could I please ask you to try and explain? I’m wondering if it’s so subtle it doesn’t show up on camera, or if I’ve missed something, or basically if I just don’t know enough to understand why! Whatever the case I’d be super grateful for your comments, thanks!

Kane Carreras-Gough

It all makes sense now. The cult of paint vibes are very G&T. The patrician's choice in either case.

Jerome

I just laughed out loud [on my own] at Henry's sister comment as well. What a bewty!

Nik

I love all the extra insights and thoughts given in the last episode like painting the shadows etc. ! And the „keep up the great work“-comment was hilarious! In one of the older Eldar videos here on Patreon Andy talked about that he maybe would expand his eldar force with some rangers. Would love to see those, especially in his army painting style! Just as a suggestion, if Andy one day would be looking for a palette cleanser 😅

MARK LEWIS

Basically, guys, people are just jealous of you, with the coments. You guys make brilliant content, that's really informative and helpful...keep up the excellent work. All the best for the future. Mark
