Hey everyone!

I’m currently painting my ass off to get ready for the Deorgard 2 Kickstarter. I’m just finishing off video one right now ready for next week. I thought I would record a quick video so you have some content to enjoy in the meantime. I’m just chatting about some tips I have for painting competitions. Stick it on in the background and enjoy!

All good advice, thanks Andy. I'm assuming (perhaps wrongly) Albert's use of the badges on the base is to signify the right angle to view the piece from. Seems like a good idea when there's any ambiguity. I had planned to be at Monte for the first time this year, but had to cancel after losing my job - so more time to prep for next year's shows, and means I'm not rushing my next pieces. I really enjoyed GD Essen and SMC (first time) this year - totally agree with going to shows, turning up, talking to people - even travelling solo made a big difference to my outlook and I made a stack of new friends!

Hey Andy, this was a really brilliant and useful episodes and I really appreciate it. The point about enjoying the process. I do have one question though regarding what style is suitable for which competition. For example, understanding what was approach you would take to Monte vs SMC. Or do you paint regardless of the comp? Im pretty inexperienced in regards to comps so mindset and knowing how to plan projects ,cheers and keep making honest and transparent content like this!

Great video again Andy; very sound tips. I would be interested to know how you deal with the ‘loss of momentum’ issue that you said can happen when you put a piece down for too long - do you have strategies, or is it always just mothballed? Cheers!

“how to paint gudly for wining compatishuns” Thanks for the great video!

Lovely video! I have a question about your first bust example and the hair. I can see that you would want to draw attention to the face, so how would you 'finish' the back of the hair, but still have it softer as it moves away from the face? I'm not sure how to do those two things - make it different to the front, but also add more to it!

That was awesome! Thx Andy - I totally appreciate your insight and honesty.

Another great episode Andy. To be honest I was going to skip this one. I have no plans to enter a competition as I don't think I will ever develop the skill level required and as I seem to be at the wrong end of the bell curve age wise, there is probably not enough time now. So glad I didn't skip it though, many of the points you made seem to apply to my general approach to the hobby and just painting minis to game with. Enjoying the process, listening to feedback, pushing to get better next time have all characterized my experience. I wanted to thank all of you at Cult, without your channel I don't think I would have had the confidence to even pick up a brush after a nearly 25 year gap away form the hobby. The blend of top end competition level inspiration and practical army level techniques is the perfect combination for me, and I assume many others. Thank you.

Hi Andy, great content, do you enter many online competitions as there are so many of these? How would you approach that compared to an in person competition where the judges can be hands on with the miniatures?

For what it's worth your vampire diorama is the best thing I've ever seen, reason I joined the patreon

The point around tacking feedback is so good. I'm a designer, and back when I was at uni, one of things the lecturers set out to do was desensitise us too feedback, every piece of work would be presented, cross examined, grilled etc - because one day it'll be a job and rather than someone with design knowledge, it'll be a client or a boss that doesn't even really get it, giving you feedback, and you're going to have to deal with it, not react to it. In a way it was good prep for posting paint jobs online!

Great video!! I just paint minis to relax and have fun, but some great points in there for someone to improve their own standard of painting 👍
