Hey Everyone,

Had a tough time painting this horse. I found it really challenging to keep up a good standard with many of the details being so similar. In this video I discuss strategy in grinding out a competition model. Let me know if you resonate with some of the things in this! I’m into the base now, and hopefully with a few tweaks to the figures it all comes together.

The Marshall Part 2 - The Highs and Lows of Painting Miniatures

100% have come to the same realization recently. I am a much happier painter deciding when I sit down for a session what specific part I am doing and go all in there vs trying to do all at once. I am so excited to see this piece in its entirety

Haven't finished the video yet, but I went "Holy Shit" out loud at the close up on the horse's mane at the start.

Great video as always. Good advice on focusing down on single areas for competition pieces as a way to get unstuck I think. I’ve found myself reaching moments where I just start almost like ‘doodling’ around the model some times - putting paint down but without any actual forward progress being made - often when I’m painting something for competition that’s kind of toward the ceiling of what I think I’m actually capable of doing. Can sometimes do a full painting day and have barely moved forwards and find it can sap a lot of motivation. Usually when I notice it happen I’ll take some photos, then try look through them to plan, maybe putting them in procreate on my iPad and seeing if I can fix elements there - so have a good reference for a next step when I return to the painting table. Also have just started trying to be pretty diligent about ending each painting session on a high note to help keep the motivation. Usually it’s sketching in colour markers or highlights around the model so the overall look starts getting dialled in a bit more - but basically anything that might make me feel good about the time at the table at the end of the day - Maybe trying to do more small details as you mentioned might help with that too. Definitely appreciate the insights into how you get yourself through these kinds of long projects, really enjoying these videos a lot!

Philosophy can go a lot further than steps. Anyone can make a video with steps, but actual wisdom and insight are where you cook! Keep sharing your experiences, Andy.

Really appreciate these videos and while I’m nowhere near anything remotely resembling competition painting, a lot of the points you raise resonate with me. I’m currently painting an Ironjawz Spearhead, only 19 minis but most of them just so similar. I can absolutely feel the slog. I might try your approach and maybe every now and then finish one mini rather than doing leather straps on 15 at the same time. I’m really looking forward to seeing your GD piece fully assembled. Love the story you are telling! The paint job so far is phenomenal, my personal favorites here are the bed roll, the leather parts and the slightly dull NMM. It’s just so so good!

I really like the dagger as well. Turned out awesome

Really interesting to see your style progressing and I love hearing you discuss this in detail. It's also nice to hear that you are actually human and the frustrations of model painting affect everyone. As a BIG fan of desaturated colours and loads of rendered texture/detail/noise, I'm really looking forward to seeing where you go in this part of your painting journey. May I humbly suggest a recipe for iron / steel that I think works beautifully, for that more battered / worn look. mix of Rhinox & Black patchy Mournfang AK Dark Sea Grey (thank for the recommendation on AK, my new fave) Scale Rainy Grey AK Ivory mixes Maybe white?

I live in an isolated place with no other painters who are striving for anything beyond a table top standard. I look forward to your videos not because they are tutorials but because I get to hear the thoughts of a world class painter. I'm loving your videos and hope nothing changes.
