DA Dred Pt 1

Hi all, Heres the first part of a series on how I'm painting a Dark Angels drednought for my upcoming army project. I'd consider this a high tabletop standard. So I will be utilising certain techniques to elevate the overall look but also focus on the fact that it is a gaming piece and needs to be achievable in a timely fashion as well as look good under normal lighting at the club. This is a "warts and all" recording with all my mistakes and musings included. I've time stamped the video as I cover several distinct processes. 0:00:00 Preshade 0:19:50 Secondary Preshade 0:30:13 Colour Application 0:36:00 Stripes and Decals 0:59:30 Battle Damage - Chipping Please let me know your thoughts in the comments, I'd like to start creating videos that cover the kind of information you will find useful in your own army painting adventures.

Liking the new equipment! The imagery seems to be a lot sharper focussed, which is really helpful for some of the blending you guys show us!

cultofpaint

Cheers Cain. There will be some improved lighting very soon as well.

Excellent long form video, really enjoyed it, even if I’m sick on the sofa. Don’t apologise for the odd interruption, 2 in over an hour is less than I get when I’m in my own let alone with my own puppy. Looking forward to the follow ups.

Just finished the video. I played at 1.25 speed to give it a preview. The length of the video is fine with me. I haven't produced a YT video in a while, but it was (is) possible to add chapters. It was great to see the close-ups. Very clear video which is great to watch. Explanations were great and voice carried through nicely. I can see applying concepts to my 1/35 vehicles as well.

Yeah this is amazing. Long form with a bit of chatting and thought process going behind it is great. Also the techniques used are exactly what I was looking for to kickstart my own dark angels army so this video was perfect for me!

Brantyn Yates

Great vid Henry. Love the longer format with the relaxed chatter. That green/black is looking fantastic. Trying my hardest not to start a new project 😉

Michael Smith

I’m a new Patreon of yours and the Draxus masterclass and this is exactly what I’m looking for plus some shorter general technique tutorials.

Jon Jefferies

Loved the video, and the thoughts process i.e looking good under poorer illumination. What level are you thinking of taking your marines up too for this project? Same as youtube tutorial, or little more? Be interesting to see a character model as well 🙂

Trent Rosenbaum

The longer format is spot on and part way through the video where you take pride in the finish is perfect. For someone that is starting to think about battle damage, (and other techniques) on models, these cues are a means to start my understanding. Maybe at the end 3 clear points would be good to take away. For example I might be wrong, but it sounded like light direction with overall consistency to the form. Damage build up and practicing the effect seemed to be something I took away.

Superb video Henry. Great idea to go into more depth with theory and technique making it like a class - always really appreciate getting the extra detailed explanations of how and why things work; helps my learning a lot. Also love the way you're incorporating painting and scale modelling aspects together. Really don't think you need to worry about the 'interruptions' - prefer that it's a relaxing way for you to make videos - and definitely don't be concerned about coming across as 'arrogant' for being happy and enthusiastic when your project is looking super cool! Besides, you talk frankly about your errors too and that's really helpful as rescue strategies are always welcome. The long format is fine but if you're going to regularly push past 45 minutes to an hour I would echo the request for chapters/ time stamps to make it easier to break up, for those of us whose lives get in the way of having enough hobbying time. I wouldn't want to completely lose the short form either, as a laser focus on one particular thing can be easier to digest (or just locate). Apart from that feedback, I'm slightly cursing you for putting yet more ideas onto my already longer-than-life project wish list, but I'll get over it! 😂. Looking forward to the next vid.

I enjoyed this while painting yesterday. I really like the shorter videos too (especially for subsequent reference) but it was good to get some of the additional commentary and explanation. The thought process and handling of potential issues or errors is really helpful. The fear of error is perhaps one of those things that put people off and understanding some of the trial and error that goes into a project is really informative.

Myself, like most that I have seen in the comments enjoy both the long form and short form videos, they both have their advantages. Though I must say that now I want to know the back story of the dread.. As for interruptions, I know i am more forgiving when it comes to a longer video, plus it sort of breaks it up a little (not that it really needs to be broken up rofl). I was annoyed at myself for not booking one of the classes when I could, but knowing that the longer videos are a sort of "alternative" in the current climate makes it worth it for me, because you both have a wealth of knowledge that you are willing to part with.

cultofpaint

Hey Nick, we are really missing classes. Hopefully these articles can provide a compromise. We're working hard at developing some virtual classes too, but really can't wait until we can get back out there!

Sean Murphy

Great video Henry, really enjoyed it. Having taken a class, I think this is as close to a close as I think we can get to a class considering the circumstances. Agreed with putting chapters in the video if possible, but appreciate the chatter during the process.

Jason Ardito

Great video. The Tamiya flat white has me very interested as I’ve never seen a white behave so well through the airbrush. Is there any special way you need to clean the airbrush after using it or is it the same as any other paint as cleaning?

Mike F

Loving these longer ones. The detail you go into is exactly why I'm here. Even the mistakes are a great help as we get some good tips for fixing things. Its nice to see the thought process in why you do things as well as how to do things.

Nick Schoolcraft

I know this video is a bit old but I just recently joined and watched it What was interesting was I had the thought of "wow I'd really like to do tuition for army painting" and then you mentioned that almost immediately after. Any update on that offering or would that be an option in your existing 1on1 offerings ?

Martyn Elvy (Bellaemonicus)

Great video, love the longer format. Seeing the mistakes made and how to resolve them is great as I worry about making them myself, which leads to procrastinating about starting and slows done the work once I have.
