How to Pre-shade or Pre-Highlight your miniatures.

In this video we take a look at how and why you would pre-shade, or pre-highlight, a model. We use some Primaris Space Marines from Warhammer 40k and an army of the dead figure from Lord of the Rings to demonstrate some simple techniques to enhance your army painting. Would it be worth pin shading the red candy style with blue colours at all???

Max

Well rather than brown/ black for definition, would the blue not work instead??? Or am I being thick?

Hey Max, I’ve got a 30k blood angels vid coming tomorrow and I touch on that very briefly. Essentially I felt you should either go black or brown. The purpose of the pin wash was to bring definition and the blue (and I’ve used blue before) didn’t bring in any noticeable difference, in spite of the colour theory. I do use some blue in the metals though. ~ Henry

Thankyou both for the replies!!! Food for thought and to play with!

This is perfect! I’m about to paint some wood elves that have lots of different tones of green fabric on them. So if I follow a similar preshade to the ghost that will work for their main cloak. My only thing is how do I get the other fabrics hand painted to kind of match? Will they look oddly different being traditionally layered up next to a preshaded, dry brush style of cloak? I’ve never preshaded then painted anything before, I’ve always just layered things up. Loving the videos! Learning a bunch! Thanks for all your efforts.

For salamanders what contrast paint would you use for the base color coat over the highlight layers? When we did the coaching cal you had me use just regular Citadel paint. Haven't painted it yet.

Hi Michael, I'm not sure what Andy suggested, but I did a fairly recent video on Youtube where I used some contrast paint to do some 40k Salamanders.
