Hi everyone,

With the show we are wanting to try out a few different formats over the first 10 episodes or so. We've had techniques, paintjob reviews, interview and guest host so far. Next we'd like to try a hobby Q&A, with a view to doing one approx every 10 episodes . As Patreons we'd like you to ask the questions.

So go for it. If it's a specific question about one of our tutorials then that would be better as a comment on that video post and we can answer it there. BUT for all other painting, hobbying, favourite sandwich, tips and tricks type questions please comment below!

We plan to record on the usual tuesday at 8pm ( next week)

Cheers, Henry

Hey there guys, I figure I would as a subjective theory question. I know this patreon/channel leans toward an emphasis on singular or small group competition pieces. But, for the army painters out there, what in your opinion makes for a truly spectacular army? Can you think of specific Games Workshop dioramas, or armies painted by someone at an event in years passed that captured your imagination? Do you think you could describe what helps armies truly stand out as top presentation?

Beyond technical skills in the hobby, would you say that artistic flair can be learnt or developed? If so, what are some resources you would recommend? For example on colour theory, I have a vague notion on it but if I was to paint something truly original rather than following a typical colour scheme (which I've been doing so far in my 8 months in the hobby with Blood Angels and Necrons) I wouldn't know where to begin on how this can be applied to miniatures. I'm not afraid to try as everything can always be stripped, but I want to overcome my innate lack of artistic talent!

Ed

I’m soon getting an airbrush and compressor, what other stuff do you recommend with regards to masks, spray booths etc or anything else that’s going to make life easier?

Daniel

Oh definitely interested in Favourite sandwiches? Mines Coronation Chicken yum!!!

Max Herngren

Do you think a quality paintjob is a combination of smoothness and contrast, or do you think one quality is more important than another? For example, I have observed that a lot of traditional fantasy artists such as Adrian Smith doesn't necessarily always blend volumes together.

Hey guys, I've got a question about mentality towards painting your best. Aside from appreciating amazing painting, I've always wondered, as people who have won at competitions such as Golden Demon, if you ever still find others' work so utterly perfect or devastatingly grimdark that it's actually intimidating? And if so, how do you then go about picking up a paintbrush and improving? Thanks.

I’ve noticed that you guys tend to use Chaos Black spray primer in your videos. Is that just personal preference or is there something that you’re not a fan of with airbrush primers? And follow up question if you think they’re worth it, what airbrush primer would you recommend? Thanks so much - feel like I’ve learned a tonne from you guys.

What's the best music to paint to? 🤔

If you had to choose one miniature that you have painted, What is the miniature you are most proud of?

Pieter-Jan Van Gucht

Hi guys, I'm a new patron so not sure if these things are maybe covered in past videos/posts... Sorry if I'm being captain obvious here :) . First of all, I would be very keen to hear about nice resources to get into colour theory. Maybe recommended sources/books? Second; I would love to hear more about the planning process (choosing colours/textures but also how to lay out the 'steps') when approaching a colour scheme (both individual models and armies). Lastly: go-to paints or paint range in general!

Andrew Steel (CMDante)

On the theme of continued development and improvement - What techniques are you all working on improving and what’s the motivation? And a second question, if you’ll permit, what are your favourite unsung hero tools or paints?

HunterOfNostramo

Are you planning on making duels/dioramas in future video tutorials where you cover up the ideas behind models, ambience, size, level of detail and many other factors that would affect a specific project? I am asking this because you have to approach this another way compared to single models because dioramas can consist of one to as many models you want no matter the size (mostly).

Hi Guys, What has caused the biggest shifts in your thinking about painting? And similarly has there been anything that has caused a big leap in your painting technique? Thanks for all the info you guys put out!

Hey guys, Do any of you do artistic work in any medium other than miniature painting? I've started practicing watercolors and it has helped me think of minipainting in different ways than I normally would.

Very practical if somewhat boring question: have been following your recommendation of Tamya flat white through the airbrush. There has been glimpses of brilliance but my experience is usually this: Start out spraying - paint is specklely - thin and test a few times - paint is good foe a short while - suddenly the paint stops coming out as a fast drying white, but is really thin and watery with the occasional wet splat and is more grey than white. I have tried different ratios of thinner to paint and tried cleaning the tip while painting to avoid drytip but to no avail. I have thought that maybe the issue is that I put paint in before thinner without thinking about it. Can you help with some tips on making Tamiya white work as it should? All the best

Someone cleans off your desks and then lets you pick 5 items to take back and start over; what do you choose? Lets say, 1 brush is 1 item, but 5 paints is 1 item. At this point you dont have a lamp, a palette, a tissue, anything. Just an empty desk and a chair. What do you consider the most important fundamental items and whats perhaps your luxury item you cant live without?

What are your opinions on high-end synthetic brushes? Do you think there will always be a negative perception of synthetic brushes simply because they're not traditional. Also, do you know any professional painters who strictly use synthetic brushes? thanks guys!

What different sources of income can a professional painter have? And what are the normal rates for a professional in these different incomes? for example, for an artbox, for painting an army, for a specific 75mm miniature for a collector ... Thanks guys !! It's a really cool initiative!

Hi guys. Some great questions here already! 1. How many Projects do you work on at a time? Do you focus on one to completion or jump around? 2. How do you recommend dealing with mistakes? I feel like between White Dwarf as a kid and the amazing standards you can see all around I want every miniature to be perfect and then get frustrated and lose steam when it isn't.

Hi Guys. Would love some input on techniques for the un-initiated in working with different putties, such as sculpting for bases and gap filling for resin miniatures. Also something on how to pin busts to plinths properly would be great as the Deorgard box is coming out soon. Cheers!

Patrick Gowan

Do you have any ergonomic suggestions for painting station setups?

lawpocket

what do ya'll think about working with full on oil paints to paint miniatures? I've been having great success so far, especially with blending and painting trouble colors.

What are the most important skills to nail as you progress through each level of painting? Any tips for mastering these particular skills? (other than practice) E.g. Beginner - consistent airbrushing, hairy brush control, correct light placement Intermediate - proper blending/glazing, fine detail, textures, use of different paint types Expert - advanced colour theory, freehand, ultra-fine detail

Asking about the subject matter of sculpts. I'm starting to feel a (only a little lol) tired of everything having to do with killing stuff! Would love to hear what manufacturers you like for a "change of subject" so to speak and also what you think in general of the majority of miniature lines having to do with fighting of some kind. Could it be cool to see a more diverse pool of subject matter when it comes to the minis we paint? Much love guys, cheers!

Sam Smith

There is so much information and content out there on how to paint, however i feel i have been in the mini painting world for a few years now and havent progressed as much as i'd have liked too. I do feel quite confident with the airbrush and get base layers down but when it comes to the brush I feel completely inept. I tend to jump from one project to the next not really finishing anything because i'm unhappy with the results. Theres so much information that i feel a bit lost and overloaded where to actually start again. What are some straight forward tips or instructions to follow to get started painting with the brush from the ground up. Thanks!

Hendog Millionaire and The Purple Power Ranger. Sometimes highlights come out like you thought; sometimes they’re chalky puddles that stain your miniature with a watermark of failure. Sometimes midtones layer up real nice; sometimes they’re the paint equivalent of fruit flavoured water (i.e. not tres bon). It feels to me that some paints, or perhaps some colours, don’t respond the same as others, even when mixed with water to the consistency you require. Every now and again, this really messes me up. Are such discrepancies the paints themselves and how they’re made (i.e. the quality of a product and its coverage - looking at you, Vallejo Hot Orange), or can such issues be overcome by HOW the paints are used, or in which order they’re used? e.g. if painting yellow how would you overcome the general poor coverage of yellow paint, or any paint with poor coverage? Is it a case of experience with specific products and knowing how they behave, or can more general rules inform paint choice and use? - Dan

I think you guys would have a lot to impart on paint itself and the pros and cons of the various brands. Maybe your favourites for different colours or purposes etc.

Chris McKenzie

Hey guys. I'd love to hear a bit of chat about oil paints as I'm about to use them for the first time, having enjoyed watching you use them in your videos. I've bought The Crimson Court to have a go on, I've got my oils and sansador, and I've got some points to reference from several of your tutorials. So I guess my question is.. if you were going to use oils for the first time, which techniques would you use to get the most out the experience?

Calum MacQueen

Heya, 3 questions from me! What is your favourite model you have painted and why? What is your least favourite model you have painted and why? What is the one piece of feedback you have gotten from a judge/s that changed how you approached mini painting? Cheers guys
