Hey everyone. New video series! I want to try and just talk to you a lot more about what I’m thinking while doing projects. So here we have a new style of video for us and the first in a more competition experience orientated set of videos.

The tutorial starts at 15:43

The audio needs to be improved for the talking heads section but I have a new Mic in order. Please comment your thoughts!

Really loved this format Andy and I'm glad you have branched out in this way to give us the snapshot into the mind of a master. It's great to hear you rediscovering your love of painting and lets hope you'll be able to pull off the planned entries. Can't wait to see more!

Have to echo what Todd said. This format is great. The tutorials are always fantastic but I might spend months trying out a single technique from a tutorial and feel that some of the other information gets a bit lost at times. However, hearing about your thought process and decision making has a boarder application across projects. Plus it's just really interesting!

Really intreged one day I'd like to compete don't think I'll ever get to that stage but would find it really interesting to follow along, see how long it takes, the thought processes etc, then on the day of competition getting to come along with you the journey would be really interesting, one thing hearing in an interview about the commitment and process its another actually following along for months for the build up and payoff. Also love the honesty with it all, I love art always have but its another thing when it suddenly becomes your job or your told which direction you have to go. So refreshing to hear that we all have moments where we doubt or don't enjoy it as much as we have previously. I'll definetly be watching what ever you guys do honestly follow this patreon for the personalities and styles of you guys not nessearliy which models you paint keep up the great work 💪

The long form approach to painting this miniature is SUPER appreciated. The tutorials are great for inspiration, but it’s nice to see a deep dive. Also the vlog portion is a nice addition. Question for you, do you have anywhere where you explain more on how you do eye lenses like you do here? I’ve struggled with pulling together something that’s subtlety glowing but I love the effect you achieved here. Backlit, blue, but not overpowering. Can’t wait to see Ahriman take form!

How do you test out your color palettes for this level of painting one thing I find so hard is picking the right variation of colors and it totally holds me up for so long. I get the conversion work done and then I feel like I sit at the plastic stage for so long or get half way in and realize I dont like the way a certain color interacts.

Love this format, great to really see/hear your thought process behind choices and ways of working!

Love the format Andy. I am just starting with the hobby and having all this super high quality information is priceless. Something I would like to ask is if there are specific tutorials in your channel you recommend to develop the correct techniques while still being very unexperienced. I started with the Kyria Draxus and it went surprisingly well, learning to paint NMM has been a lot of fun, was thinking to continue with the Farseer, as I am really looking forward to get good at painting black armours to crack on a Slave to Darkness band. Also wanted to know if you use a Magnifier Visor while painting, some details are so small I really struggle to see what I am doing. And finally, do you have a list of "go to paints", so far I've been buying the ones you recommend in your tutorials and I felt in love with each one of them, specially with the AK greens. Some of the ones I bought by myself thinking I was going to need them have been a bit of a hit and miss. Thanks a lot for your hard work and amazing content.

This is really great Andy - very interested in your process (artistic and personal reflections) around competition painting and also really keen that the Patreon supports you to enjoy producing your best work. Ahriman is looking super cool so far! Some questions for you as requested: (1) do you have any tips, other than lots of practice, around building the stamina required to paint to that level (for instance, in taking a month to paint just a head)? (2) would you consider doing a short video where you go step by step through fixing a mistake in forensic detail (like the kinds of adjustments you make to really push the painting level up)? (3) I’ve noticed that you never use Scalecolour paints for NMM - is that because they’re so matte, and there’s a relationship between painting a highly reflective surface and using a more satin paint, or is it some other reason? (4) Do you have any tips for how to learn to improve light placement when painting NMM? In my very beginner-ish attempts so far I’ve noticed that placing highlights is tricky and that subtle changes can make big differences. Is it important to just study hundreds of paintings in detail or are there other things that help with this? Cheers!

Love the video and the honesty! Do you have any freehand planned for the cloak?

Really loved this format Andy, thank you very much for sharering with us your approach, this is for me a really added value to channel content 🙏🏻 it really help me to win the fear to start and make mistakes that always keep me back, keep going 🤗

I love hearing people talk about topics they are passionate about, so waffle on as much as you want! The format is great, and this is absolutely the type of content I'm here for. Question: Does the orange you pick for the gold bounce highlights relate to the colors you pick? As in, if you used something other than English uniform as your core color, would you have picked a different orange?

Ed

Great video, looking forward to watching this project come together

Great video Andy - the waffle sets the scene for what I think will be a really interesting journey. It's going to be fun peeking behind the curtain. I would love to hear you talk about why you chose these models for your entries to the competition - referencing back to the topics you all covered in the competition prep Culture of Paint episode. Maybe this will come out as your progress onto the large flat areas where you can add your own style to them.

Awesome, really like this format. I will hopefully get to Golden Deamon next year to see the end result!
