Erin, my heart goes out to you as you deal with the religious construct and help your son understand your position. If he's old enough, you can mention the warning J. Christ gave about the Pharisees, primarily focusing on their hypocrisy, legalism, and the corrupting influence of their teachings. His warnings were designed to protect his disciples and the public from adopting a form of religion that focused on outward appearance rather than internal transformation. Humanity did not listen, thus all the religions here on Earth. They adopted Christ's teachings, but they have distorted them. There is also this strange behavior of religions, historically, fighting each other (Crusades). Is this the teaching of the great master, the Christ, who taught love and peace? The great master taught to go within. He said, "Heaven is at Hand," meaning heaven is so close you can touch it, place your hand on your heart. His message and teaching were to align (your human wisdom) with your Spirit, which is the energetic heart. This alignment (partnership) is key to working with all of creation, as we're all connected, via the heart space, which is where we need to be all of our lives. This takes practice. One does not have to have a religion to realize their Divinity/oneness with Creator Source. It is the priestly matrix that does all it can to distract one from connecting to Source, with their dogma and fancy buildings. It is the practice of returning or grounding in one's being, in one's heart, that is most important. I hope that you can inspire him to take the example of natural life, which is one with Divine intelligence. The same intelligence that grows a leaf resides in him. Confucius has this beautiful saying: "Wherever you go... go with all of your heart." Blessings.
