Healing was probably the most overpowered kind of magic in existence, but it was also perhaps the most restricted. Freeform casting healing magic was pretty much not a thing, as the way it worked was more or less solely through the power of system-fuckery. Attempts to freeform cast healing magic were naturally made here and there, but the result always ended up with it either not working or the healing magic in question being so ineffective that it wasn’t worth the mana spent. In theory, one could use controlled life-affinity magic to restore someone else’s or one’s own body, but the mana used if it wasn’t done through a skill would be stupidly high.

That’s why no top-tier geniuses had any healing skills, besides those that were actually healers, such as Eron. Few became top-tier figures as healers, though, as the Path was inherently selfless and reliant on others. Even someone like the Saintess from the Holy Church was only considered top-tier when alongside other powerful members of her faction.

Then there were healers like Dina, who technically wasn’t even a full-on healer. She was more of a druid, with healing-support magic. While her class did revolve around life-affinity magic and provided her healing spells, her race provided her combat skills. Even then, it was clearly a trade-off, as Dina wasn’t as strong a fighter when alone compared to the other four in their Nevermore Party. Records had gone into parts of her Path being about supporting others, after all.

Yet here they were, as the monk had clearly used some kind of healing magic, meaning he inevitably had to have some kind of support class or maybe some odd variant profession giving healing spells.

“You’re a healer?” the Sword Saint asked, equally perplexed.

“I wouldn’t say that,” the Eastbound Monk shook his head. “I was a healer back when my Path first began. It’s the class I chose to start with, as all the others were about committing violence against others. It was only later that I learned the necessity of personal power. Paradoxically, the best way to avoid combat is by being overwhelmingly stronger than any would-be enemy.”

Hearing his surprisingly elaborate answer, Jake was really thrown for a loop, as that information had a lot of implications. Evidently, the monk wasn’t truly a healer anymore, but pieces of how his Path started clearly still remained. It wasn’t unheard of to start as a healer and eventually become some sort of mage or even get a paladin-esque class, but, again, that usually came with some massive trade-offs. Part of that trade-off came in the form of stats.

Clearly, the monk had high physical stats; otherwise, there was no way in hell he could keep up with the Sword Saint, much less also handle Jake’s arrows decently well. Based on how little his arrows penetrated into the body of the monk and the feeling he got from the poison coursing through the Eastbound Monk’s system, he also had pretty high Toughness and Vitality.

Yet now, he displayed healing skills, had used a Willpower-based attack, and had clearly used plenty of magic with the summoning bell and scripture bloody everywhere, meaning there was only really one answer:

High stats across the board... not unlike myself, Jake concluded.

If Jake were correct, the monk truly had the kind of Path that only a genius could attempt to walk. There was no other way to get high in all stats at the same time besides overpowered skills giving or amplifying the effect of stats – such as Jake’s Malefic Viper Legacy skills and things like Fang of Man – or a lot of good titles giving bonuses to all stats. In Jake’s case, and probably also the monk’s, both.

Realizing this, Jake couldn’t help but click his tongue, as knowing that the monk had some healing skills would make the fight a lot more complicated, even if his healing skills weren’t that good. Something that didn’t even seem to be the case based on how potent it had been when he had just used it.

Hopefully, it would have some sort of cooldown or restriction, but only time would tell.

“An interesting change in Paths,” the Sword Saint said. “But you are right. Power is the best deterrent. Just look at the top factions in the multiverse. If one was overwhelmingly powerful or another too weak, the balance would be upset, and carnage would ensue.”

“Unless the one wielding overwhelming power has no desire for violence or conquering,” the monk countered.

“So that’s your plan?” the Sword Saint smiled. “To become so overwhelmingly powerful that you can suppress all who dare attempt to create chaos?”

“Not quite,” the Eastbound Monk shook his head. “But overwhelming power would certainly make things easier... if not be a requirement when the time comes.”

“What does that mean?” the Sword Saint frowned.

“I’ve said too much already,” the monk sighed, pointing his staff toward the Sword Saint again. “Let us continue. I’m certain we all still have much to learn from one another, though I do believe that, so as not to bore our gracious host too much, we should stop holding back so much.”

Taking the initiative to do just that, the Eastbound Monk erupted with power, which was also when Jake and the Sword Saint both had a realization at the same time...

He had a really fucking good boosting skill. It had already been partly activated before, the same as Jake and the Sword Saint, but when it was seemingly fully unleashed, it was a massive jump.

There was only one real choice, as both the Sword Saint and Jake also erupted with power, activating their boosting skills fully. Arcane energy burned through Jake’s body, while the Sword Saint was embraced by a steady stream of energy that coursed through his being and made the surrounding area slightly distort.

Making the first move, the monk slammed his staff down into empty air, yet it struck an invisible platform, sending a shockwave in all directions. It washed over Jake, forcing him back and slightly dinging his scales, but the intent had clearly been to create some space for the monk to attack.

Stabbing forward with his staff, he went straight for the Sword Saint and unleashed a flurry of blows. The Sword Saint parried and blocked every blow, but yet again, whenever the staff struck the blade of the old man, a loud sound was emitted from the rings, meaning some damage was dealt no matter what. With the Sword Saint being the one defending, he couldn’t stop his blade in time when striking, though he did quickly start to adapt as he began redirecting with his parries and dodging more.

At the same time, Jake let his arrows fly, but the monk was incredibly quick and kept moving to use the Sword Saint’s body to hide behind, while occasionally smacking an arrow away with his staff in between attacks. He was doing an exceptional job, but no matter how exceptional he was, injuries were unavoidable.

Yet, despite getting struck, the monk didn’t even flinch, as he couldn’t let up his barrage of attacks. Unfortunately for the monk, the Sword Saint’s rate of adaptation was outright ridiculous, as after only a few dozen exchanges, he dealt with the staff while barely allowing the rings to chime and release sound attacks.

Jake, feeling offended at the monk ignoring him and knowing that a big Arcane Powershot would probably just get redirected, decided to let the monk know just how fast he could shoot. He activated the Rapid Fire function of Timeless Focus, and moments later, more than a dozen arrows were in flight towards the two fighting below.

Finally, Jake got a reaction as the monk was forced to retreat from the Sword Saint as he tried to deflect the attack, but there were simply too many, and underneath the hail of arrows he was struck several times, having to concede and only focus on defending his vitals. Naturally, the Sword Saint wasn’t a fan of letting the guy flee, resulting in a beam of water penetrating into the monk’s waist, piercing all the way through as the water mixed with blood.

Breathing heavily, the monk spoke a Word of Power before the Sword Saint could strike again:

“Repel!”

The Sword Saint was flung backward while the Eastbound Monk dodged and deflected the incoming arrows as best he could, quickly flying towards his attacker in the process. Jake continued shooting despite the charging opponent, realizing too late that the monk moved his staff in quite an odd way if he sought only to deflect arrows. He’d drawn a magic circle with his movements, and once it was done, he pushed into it with his palm.

A massive golden palm manifested in front of the monk, fully blocking all the arrows that struck it before shooting up towards Jake with frightening speed. He barely managed to dodge out of the way, only to realize that the magic circle wasn’t gone, allowing the monk to push into it several more times as giant golden palms filled the sky.

Successfully dodging them, Jake unfortunately couldn’t keep attacking at the same time, finally giving the monk some reprieve. He even got the chance to go more on the offensive as two of the palms that had already flown past Jake suddenly spun one-eighty degrees in an instant and shot back toward him.

Reacting quickly, Jake used One Step and teleported upwards, making the palms smash together beneath him, which released a shockwave of energy as they both broke apart, sending Jake flying even further into the sky. Once again, despite not taking a direct hit, Jake felt the damage to the very core of his being as his resource pools were slightly depleted, making him frown as he still didn’t fully understand how the hell the monk’s magic worked.

Beneath, a large crescent wave of water struck the monk, who had to focus on defense once more as the Sword Saint attacked with vigor, moving even faster than before. In fact, his movements seemed to speed up with every swing, and Jake faintly felt the old man’s time-affinity as, soon enough, he started landing hits.

Small cuts appeared across the monk’s body while the Sword Saint only sped up more, unleashing a whirlwind of slashes that not even Jake would have confidence in fully dodging. The monk focused solely on defending, magic barriers popping up around him constantly, only to be instantly broken, while his staff moved to block whenever possible.

Finally, the Sword Saint reached his zenith, and with a final swing, the entire area was filled with slashes as it looked like he executed several hundred within the exact same second, resulting in the Eastbound Monk getting launched backward, now full of wounds from head to toe.

It appeared that while the skill made the Sword Saint faster, it did come at the cost of power, as evidently every slash had been weaker than normal, but it had still done wonders.

Stumbling, the monk didn’t look distressed but instead smiled brightly as he looked at the Sword Saint. “Impressive.”

Lifting his hand, he formed yet another seal with his fingers as energy rushed through his body. His hundreds of injuries once more healed in an instant, making Jake curse internally, as evidently, whatever skill he used didn’t have a long cooldown. However, the Sword Saint quickly pointed out something Jake hadn’t realized.

“Different seal than last time. A progressive skill of sorts? Limited uses dependent on the number of seals? I guess I’ll find out,” the old man said with a smile as he charged forward to attack again.

“I look forward to what more you’ll show me,” the monk said, also throwing Jake a glance. “Both of you.”

Right after speaking, he blocked a swing from the Sword Saint as Jake hung back a little. He hadn’t attacked while the Sword Saint used his time-powered blitzing skill, and now, he was also watching to see how things developed before stepping in.

It was evident by now that the Sword Saint and Jake were effectively working together against the Eastbound Monk, which really felt wrong to Jake. For several reasons. First of all, teaming up when they were all similarly leveled B-grades felt a little scummy, but worse than that, it hurt his pride. Which really went well with the second reason why Jake didn’t like this... he wasn’t even sure it was needed. While the monk was definitely powerful, nothing so far had made Jake truly apprehensive about facing him alone. Sure, it would be a long fight considering he could heal, and he was sure the monk had more to show, but so did Jake.

The Sword Saint didn’t seem to disapprove either, as Jake simply watched the monk and old man have a bit of a duel. It was genuinely impressive how good the monk was in melee combat, seeing as the Sword Saint was recognized as one of the most talented there was. Sure, the monk was also a genius, but clearly, he had learned quite a lot of things, while the Sword Saint spent the vast majority of his time only honing his swordsmanship.

The exchange between the two was quite entertaining to watch as their weapons clashed over and over again, neither having any definite advantage. Only when one of them used a skill did anything happen, with the Sword Saint sometimes speeding up or unleashing more powerful slashes, while the monk kept using his odd magic to summon floating letters, create magic seals, or unleash sound waves that could rock the soul.

Based on how Jake wasn’t struck by even the larger sound waves, their range ending just before where he was sitting in the sky, it was evident that the monk purposefully ensured he wasn’t hit.

They seemed roughly equally matched for a good while before suddenly the Sword Saint appeared to have realized something. His pattern of attack slightly changed, making it harder for the monk to defend himself, and he activated some kind of skill that slowed down the monk’s swings, making things even more difficult for him.

Pressing his advantage, the Sword Saint slowly pushed the monk back, landing minor cuts here and there against the other man, who was trying to get away as he retreated towards the ground in a quite obvious way.

I guess that’s how it works, Jake thought, guessing the Sword Saint had reached the same conclusion. Ever since the monk had been forced into the sky, he hadn’t used that redirection ability of his, making Jake conclude he needed a medium to channel it into, with the air not counting. Seeing how the Sword Saint clearly didn’t let the monk fly downwards, he likely also believed this.

Slightly out of position after dodging a powerful cut, the monk had to awkwardly block with his staff, only for the Sword Saint to change his aim as he actually targeted the staff. He stabbed his sword through the rings and twisted his body while kicking the monk in the chest, sending the other man stumbling back as his staff was sent flying into the sky.

Disarmed, he appeared defenseless as the Sword Saint suddenly used another skill. Time mana enveloped his body, and all his movements seemed to flow in reverse in an instant, resetting him back to when he was just about to make the powerful cut that had forced the monk into a disadvantageous position in the first place.

Rather than launch the same cut this time around, the Sword Saint stepped forward into range of the stumbling monk as he prepared to slash upwards, the power of his Transcendent Skill partly activating.

“Glimpse of Spring: Stormcut.”

Jake frowned as he felt the extreme power gathering, knowing that the Stormcut had grown far more powerful after the Sword Saint had reached B-grade. His slash cut through space itself as his sword moved in an instant, aiming to cut the monk cleanly in two.

The Eastbound Monk looked at the blade as he managed to raise his palm just in time, making Jake’s eyes wide at what happened next.

A Transcendent-level skill, seemingly moving with unstoppable force, was halted dead in its tracks the moment it struck the monk’s palm.

And in the very next moment, a sword and an arm were sent flying through the air as a massive crescent wave of force cut the sky in two.

Lol the Sword Saint has a rewind skill, it does pretty good being able to instantly reset to a neutral stance after an attack.

Ollie

Super curious about the foreshadowing here with «if not be a requirement when the time comes». I kinda feel el’hakan arc might seem small when this comes

Unwillingmainer

A healer into a magical fighter seems like a good combo if you have the requirements for it. Which not many do. I also believe he has either a Transcendent or Bloodline, given those are the best things to counter themselves.

BumAssBumAss

Dam, though sword saint losing to eastbound monk is pretty obvious. Unless he fully welcomed spring, sword saint loses easily, but I still didn't expect him to be disabled like this before even reaching his limit.

UNKNOWN

I think the monk gained a transcendence when he beat that (soul) wurm.

Sayjinlord

Thanks for the chapter, I can't wait for next week.

Thanks for the chapter! Eternal shrine to the First Sage! The Eastbound monk gives some First Sage vibes, even though the First Sage is on another level

“as the monk was forced to retreat from the -monk-” *swordsman* ?

Xander

TFTC :) ~5 to go :| So, EBM is going to be Erons bodyguard when he forces everyone to be immortal and pisses off THM and TBF, right? Or at least a strong member of the Daofathers army. Also seems like damage reflect was a good shout for this ones skills. Have a great weekend all. Suggested edits: "as the *monk* was forced to retreat from the *monk* as he tried to " pretty sure one of these should be SS " the *Sword* slowly pushed the monk" with the capitalisation I think this should be "Sword Saint" "Slightly *off position* after" i would expect "off balance" or "out of position" here instead

Xander

Not even slightly. Guys just trained well in a bunch of stuff rather than controlling the system entirely. Pretty sure this bugger couldnt evaporate a void god with a word or 5.

definitelynotbrjenness

Confuscious say when monk start letting you hit him, he's building up power to release with death touch. Still curious if it is karma related and if it will work on jake.

Stephen Henley

I was wondering when Zog would bring out the damage reflect (rather than redirect) that the EBM showcased during the earlier chapters vs the sloth. Seems pretty OP, but I imagine if Jake can stay out of melee it will can be avoidable.

When one is supremely arrogant, all you must do to infect his mind is to convince him he won. Easty infected before Nevermore. Assisted along the way by summoning infected support in order to gain support of Dao sect and access to other pinnacle beings through events. Or later he will describe the infection as approaching him in the form of an incredibly strong sage that was once the daofather's master.

Beaujais

Jake would be able to tell if he had a bloodline… has to be a Transcendant

J

Seems like he has some sort of transcendent skill

Carver Conway

He literally said the last chapter that he doesn’t which is why is soul was intially corrupted by that faction

Remify

My theory is that the Monk also has devine meditation capabilities making him familiar with a lot of different type of powers. Being a monk he was used to meditate before the system and now uses meditation as an overpowered tool to best himself.

The Art of Pedantry

Think it's the same one as when he channeled it into the ground, yeah. Jake just was musing about how him and SS were thinking he needed a medium but neither of them realized they could be the medium themselves since they hadn't seen previous fights. Monk probably is able to use it easier if he let's it flow with physics (downward blow gets set into ground) but it's likely tougher to use as a full on redirect back at the attacker, I'd guess. Otherwise I'd imagine it to be overpowered.

The Art of Pedantry

Yeah, I'm thinking it's either karma related or concept related. It's probably the same skill that let him channel damage into the ground. It could be that if he let's it flow with physics it's easier for him to channel (downward strike at him gets channeled into ground) versus a reversal of the physics. If it is the same skill that means it's not a mirror like effect since he channeled it into the ground. It's likely a reflect that allows him to deflect the exact same attack but it seems to require physical contact and likely is using his body as a conduit. Perhaps some form of healing magic that let's him simply let the damage flow through his body? Zog said SS's sword stopped one moment and the "very next moment" the attack was reversed against SS. So if it takes time, slight as that amount appears to be, that leaves room for channeling it. This all leads me to suspect first that it's either healing or concept related (maybe both) before I suspect karma. But if the channel into ground is not the same skill, then karma based definitely seems more likely.

17^3

I was worried that EBM would be too op and defeat Jake and SS too easily. But it looks like both can still test him. I think it's likely Jake dies here, simply because its a harmless simulation and Miranda has William to support her for the 30 days Jake would be missing.

Joao Fonseca

For anyone curious, the staff of the monk is called a shakujo. It's a Buddhist Shaolin monk weapon and it's one of the three weapons of Shorinji kempo, the martial art that I practice.

The Art of Pedantry

Now the idea of it being the first sage is interesting. Could fit with Jake being even more of a "chosen one" trope by being the only one who can interact with the first sage without being infected. It could also explain how the infected are able to hide from the rest of the multiverse if they're learning from the first sage.

definitelynotbrjenness

I also considered the seals stored damage. along with questioning jake's thoughts.

Buzzkill081

The monk's build is like someone in an arpg would make Like some broken interaction with thorns and deflect mechanics.

Clint

Great chapter. Glad this isn’t the long cliff. Wonder if EBM is working with Eron towards a multiverse without all the violence and death. Also wonder how well SS will recover from losing an arm, and perhaps worse his sword. Or will Jake take over the fight to buy him time to heal and recover his sword? Finally — how do you fight someone who can turn any big attack back on you? Poison. It’s poison for the grindy, tedious win. Even with his healing.

Meadow

I’m wondering what the drawback is for the Monks class now, there has to be one

T

So he can reflect attacks, I wonder if this leads to Jake overusing Eternal Shadow and the skill either evolving or betraying him.

Jordan Rogers

SS just got punked, unless you know he timey wimey’s himself to still having the arm

Justin

Good thing Jake is a range fighter. Can’t redirect his protean arrow power shot into Jake since you won’t be touching him, not to mention his dodging skills. Now he knows.. don’t let the monk touch you, easy! Little soul freeze to prevent him from grounding it or striking while EBM is in air.

Tunedays

Hes giving Retribution Paladin but with a Monk build instead.

definitelynotbrjenness

to ree or not to ree, now that is the question. nevermore, quoth the raven dipped in green paint.

definitelynotbrjenness

anybody else suspicious of monkadoodledo hinting then claiming to not be able to say more ... repeatedly

Jamaal Hill

I feel like it's a part off a sequence, similar to what we saw from the benevolent monk in the coliseum of mortals. Perhaps even a toned down transcendence like the sword saint uses. He seems to redirect the will (and damage) of attacks physically with his palm. He also does it the other way, striking an object like his staff or the bell to damage his opponents. So at some point he can probably reflect damage. I'm curious how it stands up to something like event horizon or Eternal shadow, which is beginning to show its own willpower and intention.

Nathan Holliday

The problem I’m starting to have is the only people able to compete with Jake are only able to do that because of some BS. Like the monk can only compete because he happens to be a grandmaster of every fighting style ever. That’s BS! I much prefer when he is fighting foes 50-100 levels above him because then it is justified why he struggles.

Jamaal Hill

Moment of the primal hunter. He can't move because Jake freezes time and detaches from the concept. Or timeless aim. I think either of those counters what we've seen so far. I think the sword saints issue is that he repeated the moment, voicing the monk a chance to adapt. It worked well against the sword disciples because SS learned quicker than them. EBM is really a genius though, so he was prepared the second time. Jake doesn't repeat moments, he stops them altogether.

Michael

how is the monk so strong without a bloodline or transcendant or anything..?

SirbBrownFluffles

Might be related to Erons desire to prevent death across the multiverse

BumAssBumAss

Neither. Jake would be able to tell he has a bloodline and sword saint would be able to tell if he is transcendent. Not every powerful character needs to have bloodline or transcendent. And he mentioned in the previous chapter that the unknown faction could not infect those with bloodline or trasncedent

John Durrett

Correction needed: Jake got a reaction as the monk was forced to retreat from the “monk” as he tried to deflect the at Jake got a reaction as the monk was forced to retreat from the “Sword Saint” as he tried to deflect the at

Isaac Earl

I don't think so. But I do think Jake will have to resort to the boosting award he earned from the Mages staff.

Lucas Fialho

I think SS must have something to help if he get disarmed or something. I mean, his path have a major drawback that is he only use his one weapon, and if a major damage make him lose his arm or his sword he becomes almost a dead weight. In B grade i have hope there is some bullshit that allow him to rapid heal his arm and summon his sword again

Xerecs

The Daofather is his teacher. He's also most likely human and has a ridiculously good teaching skill. Jake clearly doesn't recognize him as a fellow chosen. We have already had examples of how skills can be gained simply from learning from another. For example Jake being offered a skill from duskleaf. So what stops someone from rather then blessing another simply taking that person on as a student and teaching them your skills? Nothing it's a choice on if you bless them and impart a skill yourself or you have them simply learn your legacy themselves. It's something you still have to do regardless, being a chosen doesn't grant you a full legacy as we have seen. Another reason why I believe it's the Daofather. I feel like he is a jack of all trades similar to the EBM. Each Daolord probably specializes in a specific area that the Daofather also possesses. Further speculation. I don't recall it ever mentioned if the Daofather was one of the primordials that went to stop the Viper during the 7th era. I don't believe he was there and even the wiki says very little is known about him. I think the Daofather, the Dao sect or perhaps an unknown splinter of the faction was behind whatever happened to the Vipers family. For one specific reason. Whatever happened hasn't allowed the Viper to bring them back and what but some mysticism bullshit would cause that? This could also lead into my other theory clearly this unknown faction has the ability to bring people back to life. Similar but far more advanced then what Eron can do. Where as he basically creates zombies these others can fully interact as if still alive. So this mysterious faction is either part of the Daofather's faction or a splintering from it. Perhaps a former chosen or student of the Daofather. All we can do is wait and see.

Benjamin Mages

Honestly? You just don't use big attacks. Jake's rapid fire arrows were actually pretty effective earlier.

Benjamin Mages

He's an example of how you don't necessarily need one of those to be truly strong. Villy is an example actually; he does have a bloodline, and at some point he got a transcendent skill, but neither are anywhere close to the reason he's so strong (at the very least the bloodline is a non-combat ability for example).

Benjamin Mages

So Jake is the only person in the setting allowed to be BS? Or are you trying to argue that Jake doesn't have multiple levels of BS himself?

Kradish

There should be some limitations or drawbacks to the damage reflect, but so far we haven't seen any. If there aren't significant and meaningful limitations, it's just a gimmick that gets boring (very) quick and only works for random villain of the week. Stuff like damage cap on what can be reflected or strain put on the user when reflecting. Even then, if it can be mitigated by basic healing, again just goes back to boring gimmick with no real drawbacks being used to not just nullify but abuse the alpha strikes of people that are supposedly at the peak of their generation. There's a reason Achilles heel is a thing.

definitelynotbrjenness

I was just thinking about that. easy fight if death by a thousand poison cuts works against someone that can't hurt you and has limited # of healing seals.

Benjamin Mages

We already know a drawback. He has to have something to deflect it into, whether it's the ground or an opponent in arm's reach. And even on the ground he wasn't doing that for every attack. There may also be a cooldown to deflecting it into an opponent seeing as this is the first time he's done it this fight (though it might also be that he just held it for a moment where it'd be particularly effective).

Matt

The Eastbound Monk is strong sure but have they tried fighting him while playing the “King of Wishful Thinking” by Go West from the 1990 Soundtrack to Pretty Woman? Would totally disrupt his path

Medicine Man

It was converted into prima credits

Medicine Man

Thats why Carmen was wondering what the f just happened

Biggy smalls

I mean can’t he just deflect the attack into an affinity? Like isn’t air affinity all around him? I too don’t care for this character. Feels like the characters been retrofitted to fit this moment in the story.

Kradish

We suspect there has to be something to deflect it into (far from confirmed), we don't know what range he has. The cooldown is only a significant limitation if it's on a similar timeframe to the ability of opponents to throw out attacks - a 1 second cooldown on reflect if opponents can only throw out meaningful attacks (itty bitty attacks can add up, but individually they are just , especially if opponent can just heal them) every minute isn't a meaningful limitation. There might be no real cooldown, just that it isn't worth reflecting bee stings. I suspect we'll see limitations detected and exploited as things go on. I've just been burnt before by an author adding in stuff like an effectively indestructible opponent where the limitations were arbitrarily high and it just made things unreadable. Just noping attacks is one of the easiest ways to make me nope a story :D. Oh right, this is also not a bloodline or transcendence which could explain (though it would still be annoying) a completely broken ability.

Hayden Leech

They already called it a khakkhara. Googled both and it looks like the same thing. Funky!

Michael mann

I’m really enjoying the Monk, he’s an interesting character so far. I think he walks a really specific path. I had a suspicion when he beat Carmen and now I’m more confident. I think his path is rooted in pacifism, but the concept taken to such an extreme that it allows him to fight without bloodlust or ill intent. I’d suspect a touch of karmic concept in there, his trump card is to redirect bloodlust filled attacks back upon their user

Zimidiaz

"Finally, Jake got a reaction as the monk was forced to retreat from the monk as he tried to deflect the attack," shouldn't this be the monk was forced to retreat from the sword saint?

Fyrtue

Haven't read your full comment yet but can confirm that Daofather isn't human. It's been emphasized before that Valdemar and Aeon are the only human primordials.

Kradish

Death by a thousand cuts relies on damage accumulating. Everything we've been shown so far is that B grades have insane ability to endure. Using trickle damage, based on expectations set by author, would take a (very very) long time to wear someone down. Even more so when opponent can heal and reduce the effectiveness/accumulation of e.g. poison. Someone being able to nullify big attacks with seemingly no cost (observed so far) breaks the setting.

UNKNOWN

The soul parasite, maybe in the process of fighting it off, he developed a transcendence. I'm calling the parasite a soul worm.

Justin

That’s assuming he even did beat it. If I’m an evil soul wurm meant to trick someone I’d let them believe they beat me. I’d implant false memories as well like sure you got checked out by your patron yep he cleared ya. Would explain somewhat why daofather didn’t tell anyone.

Justin

Guessing his point is Jake got all star top ever like ever across all eras since nevermore existed and yet here he’s being challenged by equal level foe. Don’t really feel correct. Being challenged by a foe with ++ levels does. And it’s literally his path - he’s designed to fight foes who out level him.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Noone said he was disabled my dude he can rewind time and gain his arm back thats even if it's his arm that was severed.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

There has to be a drawback otherwise it's just an OP ability that makes it so no one can ever do damage to you

It's been a while, sorry, are you sure he can't only recognise a bloodline patriarch?

The Sword Saint v The Archer is the final battle

Corey Herington

Tftc the monk was forced to retreat from the monk(Sword Saint) the Sword (Saint) slowly pushed the monk back Jake’s eyes wide(widen) at what happened next.

Jeff McCulley

I find it interesting that in this whole process, more and more powerful beings have been sent to thirty day timeouts. Meaning they can’t respond to crises in their home territories even if they want to. Which, presumably, means that Jake’s faction is hovering up territories with wild abandon. And interesting ramifications once those thirty day timeouts are up.

Fore stumbler

One or more of Jake skills penalize him against opponents around his level and a lesser level. I think its big game Hunter. So the monk being around his level actually hurts Jake power against him

Shakujo is the Japanese name. Shorinji Kempo is a Japanese martial art. The other weapons are the dokko and nyoi. By far the shakujo is the one I practice more.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Timey wimey's 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Gh0st-Hunt3r

I have an insane idea ...... What if the mysterious sect is run by The Eastbound Monk and Eron?.?? What if the eastbound monk is actually gonna try to recruit jake by killing the SS first so they can have a private chat and hopes the SS WILL go tell Aeon what he said to throw everyone else off while hoping to recruit jake essentially hoping jake wont tell if recruited ???? Oh man my mind is goin crazy right now with possibilities 🤔🤫

Tobias

TFTC!!! Quick note: Finally, Jake got a reaction as the monk was forced to retreat from the monk as he tried to deflect the attack

CryptoFUDz

I don’t get how the monk can be as powerful as Jake. When Jake has literally won every system event, always getting the highest rewards?

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Only those with a bloodline can detect others with a bloodline and only those with a transcendence can detect others w/ transcendence it's not specific they can't tell if it's a Patriarch or not

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Lol too true I almost wish El Hakken had stuck around a little while to maybe kind of possibly turn into a good guy like William I bet If he had the chance and had a better mentor/Rolemodel then Yip he could been a powerful ally

Chris Layman

That's just it, he deals increased damage to tougher foes, similar-level powerhouses are trouble

definitelynotbrjenness

Does the fastest kid in gradeschool always end up being the one with a D1 scholarship?

definitelynotbrjenness

how long do they have to take a pylon before they are out for good? can they join someone else without taking a pylon?

Bose

Lot of fuckery surrounding this monk

definitelynotbrjenness

great character, but i'm hoping his path is rooted in arrogance and the pretentious idea that I am a better person than you, so you can't defeat me. a path messing with people's awareness during fights and relying on storing the damage done to him and releasing it or otherwise slowly damaging their souls. If he joins the team, I'll love listening to the gang pointing out his path is strong, but flawed once understood. turn him into Sheldon failing to understand why the mouth breathing heathens are beating him. or a martial artist challenging a muay Thai fighter .

beeve

Nah

definitelynotbrjenness

I was thinking along the lines that these monks might use mental fuckery too

Benjamin Mages

I could get pedantic and point out that Jake reaching the top slot was not based purely on fighting ability but also versatility. And that he had a party of extremely strong individuals. But that's not the point. It's boring if there are 0 people nearly or as talented as Jake. Give him a rival whose truly his equal or even superior, that he has to grow to beat or at least really struggle. Up until this point we have basically never seen an equal level opponent keep up with him without something like SS's transcendence. But why can't that happen? Eastbound Monk got 7th on the leaderboard without any team at all, or at least any good team. I think that from a certain perspective that's actually more impressive. I do not think Jake would have topped the all time leaderboards on his own. It might not even have been close. He would have gotten way fewer floors done in time.

Benjamin Mages

Zogarth has a good track record of making characters (in my opinion) defeated in reasonable ways. If the ability truly has no weaknesses or merely cosmetic ones, then Eastbound Monk will not be defeated convincingly. EM might win this fight, maybe, to establish a long term rivalry. He will, however, not win every fight. Jake will come out on top, if not this time, then probably next time. EM cannot be truly invincible for this to happen. From a less meta perspective, EM has been rather severely injured multiple times in the fight. Yes he can heal himself, but if his reflection was unlimited he probably would be using it more, especially since it seems likely that his ability to heal himself isn't infinite. Sure he could be playing 5d chess and just pretending he needs something to deflect into, but I'm not sure why at this point he'd bother. Sure he could be not using it as often as he can for some reason, but if you can deflect everything all the time forever why not just do that. Even if he's faking weaknesses to the ability, you would only need to do that if the ability isn't absolute.

Xerecs

Race doesn't really matter in the long run to anything I said.

Biggy smalls

Well in this hypothetical scenario after Nevermore Jake killed his heralded rival, became the first person Villy had ever heard of reaching the gate of enlightenment as a C grade, killed a true dragon a feat Villy compared to an S grade killing a god. Oh, and then his B grade evolution netted himself a skill that affected the records of his entire race. Seems like Jake’s just always been the fastest kid and this monk fellow shouldn't be able to handle both primordial chosens like this?

Biggy smalls

Like Nathan I’d prefer if Jake didn’t have any rivals around his level or age. Doesn’t really make sense in light of his better titles, better transcendent skill, and most likely more fruitful path. I’d rather him get beat up and lose to beings 50-100+ more levels than him. Makes more sense based off the narrative that nobody his age or level could match him. But it is what it is.

AsuraFalling

You’re forgetting that Transcendents can sense each other. The sword saint mentioned this right back at the start of nevermore. Also as someone else pointed out, the monk just said the reason they (the mysterious faction) could even attempt to corrupt him was due to neither having a bloodline or transcendent skill as both those alter your soul on some level which prevents this form of corruption from being possible. This was explained to him by a Primordial so….. I’m inclined to believe it. And bloodlines on any level can sense each other, more powerful bloodlines doing it easier than weaker ones. This was explained by the dragon Thot back when the Flights were trying to seduce Jake.

oibe

I think the monk is comparable to Jake in stats but better than Jake and Miyamoto are in concepts. A lot of Jakes power does come from concepts and his bloodline empowered fighting style. Let’s remember stats aren’t everything.

beeve

Yeah I 100% agree… why the fuck hasn’t Jake been spending more time meditating and at the gate of enlightenment? Can you do that in a time dilation chamber? And why hasn’t he tried to progress more in the sages book that was left now that he’s b grade

Rid

Because of the Eastbound Monk’s redirect ability, I can’t help but picture Miroku from InuYuasha haha

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Ok so let's unpack this shall we- First of all to make an assumption that the monk shouldn't be able to handle The Sword Saint And Jake because of all Jakes accolades is an is a crazy statement let me elaborate in a few words.... how can you assume The EBM is inferior ? Based on what evidence? You have NO idea what kind of training he has and the Dao Sect doesnt like to leave there home how do you know how much time dilation hes spent Meditating, how do you know what he can and can't do ? For all we know The EBM has trained MORE then jake jus sayin if you had facts to back up your statement then we'll! Signed -Devils Advocate-

Scalibrini - best on his team at every level until he was the 12th man. What's interesting and also somewhat relevant, most of the guys on the end of the NBA benches could score twenty points in a game if given 40 minutes and a green light to shoot. Eastbound monk is closer to Jake than random person who died in the tutorial is to LeBron. I also feel like the monk might be an impossibly hard but brittle shell. One or both of our heroes is going to Crack him eventually. He's annoying me right now like the super vegan from Scott pilgrim. However, I can also see a world where he's been better prepared to fight at higher level right now with conceptual knowledge and Dao fuckery.

definitelynotbrjenness

Eron's interaction with Eastie made me think the two aren't on the same team. However if one of them isn't involvèd, I'll be a little surprised.

BumAssBumAss

Although the sword saint has shown to be able to rewind his own time for attacks, he has never done it to heal before. I think it is possible, but I am not going to assume that yet. Regardless, he is still on the back foot against the monk.

VenL.C.

*Correction ? “Then there were healers like Dina, who technically wasn’t even a full-on healer. She was more of a druid, with healing-support magic. While her class did revolve around life-affinity magic and provided her healing spells, her race provided her combat skills. Even then, it was clearly a trade-off, as Dina wasn’t as strong a fighter when alone compared to the other four in their Nevermore Party.” >She is a Druid, with healing-support magic. Also, I feel like this should all be in present tense.

definitelynotbrjenness

how long before arnold is only seen wearing black armor, cape, helmet, and mask as he commands his armada of spaceships each one capable of destroying a star?

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Now i feel like I missed something ? When did the eastbound monk interact with Eron?

definitelynotbrjenness

prior to event. eron brought him info on competitors and eastie was like "I, the amazing benevolent and humble eastbound monk does not concern myself with the matters of the lesser enlightened for my purity and goodness shall overcome their flawed inferiority, in my humble opinion." or at least that is how I remember it.

Rid

I’m convinced he’s just Miroku from InuYasha 😂

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Which chapter ??now I need to go back and read

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Are any of yall on discord?? If so which server do you chill in Also why do ppl have to be DICKS? I don't understand it ? If you hate your life, don't take it out on others fml LOL Nevermind I blocked him 🤣 easy fix

definitelynotbrjenness

no...more then that. eron would have had to go to admin candidate selection so before or during venus vacation

Chris Layman

Jake and SS just haven't figured out how to counter EBM yet, hardly any of them are even trying

beeve

No one gives a shit

Abhishek

I am fairly sure there has to be a weakness to the monk that SS and Hunter will be able to find.

definitelynotbrjenness

isn't jake's ability to passively help gods make breakthroughs and gain levels more important/ dangerous than primeval origins? I can see gods disguised at mortals trying to spar, collaborate, or just have conversations with him. bakery god opens store in haven, etc...

definitelynotbrjenness

i'm hoping his power is based on delusional confidence in being a better person (vegan - Scott pilgrim) but I suspect it will be something more logical. a flaw that both of our heroes can take advantage of. can accept this causing monkledoodledo to begin villian arc or join the avengers as someone everybody picks on.

definitelynotbrjenness

I glance at discord, but the vibes aren't for me. can't follow the conversation unless i'm right there when it happens.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Yeah I can definitely see that being a problem since I just checked it out and found it to be very confusing especially when there's too many people on it once trying to talk to each other but I did make a few friends that read the book so that's kind of cool and you can talk to them directly instead of in the servers

Gh0st-Hunt3r

S*** I even messaged Zog and he replied

definitelynotbrjenness

did they yell at you? one of the rules is don't @zog or #zog ... whichever it is?

Gh0st-Hunt3r

No I messaged him directly and he responded

Fore stumbler

I love the fighting but this really means nothing as Jake has a way to kill him. Jake has made human bane and while the ebm isn't only a magic user, hampering that would make Jake the winner.

mahmoud fathy

I think he got it from the cyclop the same as jake.

Payton Cohen

I really hope it’s not hinting towards the cliche that there is some threat outside the multiverse they need to face

ZanSanCho

SS would be able to detect if he was a transcendent

UNKNOWN

In hindsight that's very obvious.

Fylbrom

I have a feeling that the Monk is foreshadowing a multiversal war, probably centered within the 93rd Universe, my guess being as soon as it opens up for god's. This Unknown Faction is then, trying to 'recruit' all the potential natives who have good chances for godhood, as they would be the biggest threat to the other low-tier gods that would show up first during that stage of integration. My guess is the Unknown Faction want to rush the 93rd Universe and establish themselves thoroughly before the Universe opens up to Primordial level gods to enter. I could be way off, but that's my take on it.
