Get your groans out of the way. Listen to the show before commenting. So in 2017 I watched Hunter X Hunter (the two child bounty hunters in the show image) and Tiger Mask W.

It got me thinking about how long I've been watching anime. Ever since I got my first hand me down transformer I knew there was a world of cartoons for me. I’ve had a lifelong addiction to manga, JRPG’s, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, vinyl figures, Mechs, fine selvage denim and everything else Japan ever since. My daughter has already seen Sailor Moon and Spirited Away. My wife and I have tracked down every Miyazaki movie together. We love to discover new anime inspired shows like Lolirock because it's girls kicking ass, rocking the house, saving the world, and working together.

(My Neighbor Totoro, every kid should see it)

(Spirited Away)

So in the spirit of the third show being a place to do something that isn’t concerned with saving the world I was happy to have Emma and Johnny on to talk about all things Japanese media related.

I am guessing that Street Fight has a low contingency of anime fans. Bryan is just immune to it I think. It really is one of the things I get a lot of joy from. I enjoy delving in to subjects of life and death that we just don’t do in western kids cartoons or escaping in to something that I can’t immediately see the toxic americanism in (also because we wuz Street Fightin we talked about the toxic dark parts of Japanese media as well). For me it does feel like a place I can go watch, read, and enjoy something that isn't tainted by my culture. But mostly we just talked about how much we enjoy macho boyish dominance and super powers that are derived from the human spirit. Which is most of Shonen anime. We also know it's a strange addiction to have but it isn't treatable. Here is a link to some of the series we mentioned. Share some of your favs in the comments. Let Emma and Johnny know what you think!

Cowboy Bebop

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Ranma ½

Rurouni Kenshin

My Neighbor Totoro

20th Century Boys

One Piece

Princess Mononoke

Enjoy!

P.S. The kratom has landed. So people who got charged November 1st your Cooking Loot Zine Kratom is being processed right now. Sorry for the delay but credit companies are meddling.

Man, no full metal alchemist: brotherhood? Literally the best anime ever created. Even the dub is awesome.

haha I'm stupid excited for this episode, I was intensely into anime for a few years and kind of got embarrassed about it and backed off aside from Miyazaki. I just finally watched Princess Mononoke a couple weeks ago and love Totoro--the only two I have left to see are Porco Rosso and the Wind Rises, and Ian Jones-Quartey of Steven Universe shouted out his TV series Future Boy Conan so I guess I gotta prioritize that now too Favorite anime you're missing is probably FL/CL and maybe Hellsing but I haven't watched that one in so long I'm wondering how it holds up. Jojo's been on my list to check out for a while and I'm interested to hear what other suggestions come up to start getting back into it.

When I was a kid in Western Australia in the 80s/90s we only had 3 or 4 TV channels. Perth was isolated. Locals still refer to Perth as the most isolated capital city in the world. I don't know if that's true but that's the way people feel. One of those channels played a lot of Astro Boy. I watched it obsessively and I can't remember any of the plot lines but I was mesmerized by the visuals. The aesthetic imprinted hard. It must have had the same effect on a lot of the kids in my age group because by the time I was a young teen and looking to wear what I thought of my unique identity (lol) on my clothing, Astro Boy merch was in all the local alternative (lol) store. Ditto Marvin the Martian.

These days I find myself going back to these over and over gain: Akira, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Naturo. A very run of the mill faves list but they always appeal to me.

We touched on FLCL the first time we tried to record! That's another huge favorite of mine. I'm cautiously optimistic about the sequels; the thing I loved about FLCL was how it just showed the brief, confusing moments when a galaxy-spanning epic happened to brush by our planet, and it'll be interesting to see how and/or if the sequels work with that.

Johnny Landmine

We didn't talk about Neon Genesis Evangelion at all so just let the record show that Asuka is better than Rei

Joe LiButti

Yeah I heard about the sequel but I'm so used to shows coming back or things getting remade and being terrible I'm trying not to even think about it unless it gets a bunch of rave reviews. Also The Pillows rule and I want a vespa so bad probably in part because of this show

This was such a good episode. You guys should do another one at some point

My anime exposure is fairly limited, so getting some good recommendations from this episode was appreciated. I definitely feel the pain of trying to recommend the few things I've watched to other people though. JJBA is a great example, because it's a tremendously entertaining, funny, imaginative adventure, with great, flawed, but lovable central characters fighting a variety of villains with clever uses of amazing Stand/breath powers. Buuuuuut, there's the fact that Jonathan goes from shouting "DIE NAZI SCUM" to being best friends forever with an SS officer (and the fact that German technology is the best in the world), there's the iffy treatment of women (at least so far, I understand Araki's gotten better in the manga), there's the episode where they fight the child abuser whose power de-ages people... There's so many little bits and pieces I get very uncomfortable about sharing. On the whole though, Jojo was the series that broke through my anti-weeaboo prejudices. I was thoroughly skeptical about the whole thing, but Jojo just got so ridiculous in places that it washed over me and I couldn't fight it any more. I was all set up for disliking what I saw as anime tropes, and Jojo just overdid them to the point where I was cheering along with every nonsensical ass-pull maneuver and heartwarming victory for the good guys. Surprised no-one mentioned One Punch Man though. I thoroughly enjoyed that and there's only a couple of minor things that make me worry about recommending it to people. It's been thoroughly good at getting through to non-anime types as well, since it's genuinely funny and the tropes and cliches that it dismantles and mocks as much as it plays on them are pretty universal by now, I feel. The Paradisers did nothing wrong.

streetfightradio

Yeah I am definitely more forgiving on my anime. JoJo's would be a hard sell but I think something even like Fist Of The North Star is a good way to draw people in with badass fighting. We talked about it on the show we lost but that was one of my favorites. I have not seen one punch man yet. I heard bill Burr talk about how much he loved it on his podcast which was surprising. We will definitely be doing this again

Emma Bowers

I'm actually really shocked we didn't mention ANY of Satoshi Kong's stuff

Just watched Ghost in the Shell. It was so immersive, and how the art managed to do the light is kind of astounding.

I haven't watched Serial Experiments LAIN since I was 16 but that's what got me into anime so I hope this recommendation doesn't disappoint.

Johnny Landmine

One of my favorite anime-related memories was having a bunch of friends over and staying up all night just watching the entire show in one go.
