Having wheezed through my grandfatherly beard about mid 1970s D&D, I'll just add here that Blood Bowl is one of those games that could only have happened at the exact moment of its creation. The early 1980s NFL mania in Britain followed hot on the heels of the rise of Warhammer, and Games Workshop were far more clever than D&D's original publisher (TSR) at seeing how to explot opportunities without overextending their resources.
