My favorite Thomas Jefferson anecdote is in 1824 when French general LaFayette (who fought for the US in the revolution) went to Monticello to visit TJ there was an add in the local paper telling people to keep their slaves off the roads for a week or so because if LaFayette saw them he would make a point of saying how bad slavery was, so who know how many people were kept from going out because of this one visitor.
