Details for episode 2. Not really too much to explain here. ------------------------------------------ Tokai Derby/SP1 1:35 The Tokai Derby is a relatively major race in the NAR, which is a smaller organization than the JRA and governs the various regional/local horse racing associations throughout Japan. Most of the NAR races are not in the Twinkle Series, but some of the more major ones are. For example, the Tokyo Daishoten, the only internationally recognized G1 in the NAR, is included in the game. The Tokai Derby is exclusive to the classic year (3 year olds), similar to the classic triple crown. Based on the Japanese Wikipedia page, SPI races are like the Tokai region’s exclusive local equivalents to G1s. They have SPII and SPIII races as well.

CinGray, while technically a seinen as the manga was published in a seinen magazine, pivoted more towards the "shounen sports" subgenre and has alot of the tropes that come with said subgenre. Stuff like supporting characters explaining and being astonished at what's happening, supporting characters explaining techniques or conditions mid-race, alot more internal monologues from the racers, flashbacks mid-race, and overall "length" being longer which includes cliffhangers like this episode. Funnily enough, this episode has probably the shortest race in Umamusume anime fiction distance wise at 800 meters, yet time wise due to the above tropes it feels longer than most of the races covered in the anime.
