Details for episode 21 ------------------------------------ Tama’s demeanor leading up to the race. Tama is shown to be abnormally calm and composed leading up to the race when she’s in the stands with Komiyama, which is a reference to how the real horse was leading up to the race. ------------------------------------ Rudolf’s “Take it easy” 10:33 The reason that this phrase is in English is because Rudolf’s jockey, Okabe, used it when communicating with McCarron, Pay the Butler’s jockey. When they became friends, they had difficulty communicating due to the language barrier. This phrase was one that Okabe learned and apparently used often. As for why Rudolf saw Oguri off before the race, Okabe was chosen as Oguri’s jockey for this race. ------------------------------------ Dicta hitting the gate In real life, Soccer Boy got a bloody nose. While this might not sound too bad, this is actually extremely serious for horses as they only breathe through their noses. He basically had to run the whole race while struggling to even breathe. ------------------------------------ Tamamo starting her spurt early In real life, Tamamo was known for doing his own thing and ignoring the general flow of the race. Starting a spurt early like this takes a lot of stamina as it requires the horse to maintain high speeds for a long time. There is a tactical reason for doing this as well. The race was relatively slow paced, which favors horses near the front. Normally horses in the back conserve more stamina which lets them overtake later in the race, but because everyone is going slow, this advantage is diminished. As such, having a position advantage allows the horses in the front to do better. By going early, Tamamo is able to make the most of her conserved stamina while also pressuring everyone else to raise their pace, even if it might be a bit early for them. Details for episode 22 ----------------------------- Enjoying the race Surprisingly, even this has roots in real life. After the Arima, Okabe noted that Oguri ran with his ears perked up as if he was having fun. ----------------------------- Creek interference This would not be the last time that Take did this, as he did it again during McQueen’s Fall Tenno Sho, disqualifying him. If not for this, McQueen would have won the Tenno Sho 3 consecutive times (spring, fall, spring). This is also why Nase takes the blame, since it was Take’s mistake in real life. ----------------------------- A New Era This statement has a double meaning, as Japan would shift from the Showa era to the Heisei era in just 2 weeks. December 25th was also the anniversary of the start of the Showa era. Tamamo Cross was apparently said to be the last great horse of the Showa era and the bridge between the two eras, with horses like Oguri and Creek being like his successors. ----------------------------- Dicta’s tooth Soccer Boy did indeed break a tooth in addition to the nosebleed. ----------------------------- Changes from the manga Kitahara and March’s lines in the concert and the following discussion between Musaka and Belno were added in the anime. In the manga, it goes straight from the Kasamatsu group talking to Musaka talking with Komiyama. In the manga, Creek looks much more disturbed and shocked when learning about her disqualification. Manga Creek also generally looks a bit older and has more muscle definition. Details for episode 23 ----------------------------- Inari One Inari is actually from the same generation as Tamamo, so she is older than Oguri. ----------------------------- Tokyo Daishoten subtitle mistake The subs say that the race is 2000m for some reason. My guess is that the subtitlers assumed that the anime made a mistake since the race is 2000m in the present day, but the race was indeed 3000m in the past. ----------------------------- Tokyo Daishoten Grade The Tokyo Daishoten only became a G1 race in 2011, so it was not a G1 back then. It was still a major regional race though, which is why they are wearing their special racewear. It is similar to how March wore an outfit for her race even though it was not a G1. ----------------------------- Changes from the manga The ending sequence takes place before all of the stuff with Inari, but was probably moved to the end so that the season would end focusing on Oguri and Tama. ----------------------------- How much is left Season 1 covered around 40% of the manga, so there is enough left for maybe 34-35 more episodes assuming that they keep the same average chapter to episode ratio. The earliest chapters were a longer though, so maybe fewer.

Decayed Lulzul

Crazy that all this was only thru her classic year ain't even half way done

VeeGee

The Creek DQ scene reaction was priceless.

Aleksandras Zickus

the DQ IRL race looked very very dangerous. My pet peeve is I wish they showed it in the anime, cause that other horse almost tripped and fell

Amaedo

Creek and Yutaka Take's story is so wholesome, this DQ was one of the biggest bumps in the road but we all have to start somewhere, they really became one of the GOAT duos of the 90s 🔥 Also wtf its the year of the Horse this year cygames better cash in on that with something crazy (Umamusume: Star Blossom anime, Cingray movie etc idfk maybe a Gentildonna/Orfevre anime as Pretty Derby Season 4?) Bro im so fucking thirsty for more out of this franchise rn i pray everyday

Teddy Scott

The eating competition with the donuts in Pretty Derby Season 1 was a reference to this race. With Oguri just beating Tama and Super Creek being disqualified.
