Crosscheck's 90s Animated Spider-Man & Peter Parker (Patreon)
Content
Crosscheck has been on a roll with their recent Spider-Figs! While I haven’t collected them all, this one I couldn’t pass up on! This show was the bees knees back in my day, and it was one of the most disorienting shows to try and follow the plot of when it was on the air!
Today, you can just stream the whole show in order, but back when it was in syndication, trying to keep the story straight when each arc had like five or six parts to the story!
…in a way it was also just like reading comics back then too I guess 🤔
But man this show was a blast! Right down to the crossover episodes with the Iron Man and X-Men Animated shows!
Crosscheck has absolutely nailed the look of this character! Down to the eye shaping, the cell shading, and the funky body shape!
And the print quality it great! I mean get a load of that 360° head print! It's even got printing on the hands and shoulders! Wow!
I mean they didn’t need to go this hard but they did!
Again, the subtle cell shading on the corners of this fig are very fun! It adds a nice level of depth without it feeling too overbearing on the eyes.
But what's that on the horizon I see? Could it be buyers remorse perhaps? 👀
Of course this fig just couldn't be perfect... how could I have been such a fool to expect such things? This Spider-Man is (sadly) the latest version of the character to join the #IncompleteLegs club!
And man, this time it actually, genuinely upset me. Legitimately WHY would Crosscheck do this to one of Marvel’s most famously “weird posed” heroes?! Does Crosscheck really want us to just leave this fig in a vanilla pose in a display case somewhere never to be touched again?!
Man… I was really thinking this fig was gonna be one of their best figs yet, but this little area of missing ink really knocked it down a few pegs... I mean come on! They printed the hands AND shoulders on the torso but not the entire legs?! What a joke! 🙄
Weirder still, the entire legs were printed over red plastic! Who made that decision?!
It had to have been for color matching purposes, right?
Ya might as well have given us a blank minifig head while they were at it since that’s basically how much ink is missing from the fig!
UGH
Anyway! Let’s keep things brisk and beeezy and talk about the other half of this two-pack!
The Peter Parker is great! It’s almost more of a treat than Spidey, since we very rarely get a Peter Parker along with custom Spidey figs!
When it comes to the adaptation from animation to minifig, this one is pretty clever. In order to get that long over-shirt / undershirt look, CC printed the belt and pants way up into the torso area to maximize the height you could get.
It’s not like he wore high waisted pants in the show, but this design choice helps sell the shirt over the top hanging lower and is honestly pretty smart!
This does “technically” classify the fig for #IncompleteLegs as well... buuuuut also his pants are blue throughout and I’m not nearly as frustrated with the color blocking.
Speaking of color, I think if I could have changed one thing, is that I want that undershirt to be even more saturated. I mean this dude was wearing a deep magenta shirt in that show, but here it feels a little too grey.
I absolutely love the half-n-half face print for when his Spider-Sense goes off though! It’s a huge win for us comic fans! That half and half motif runs through the original era of Spidey and then of course well into the 90s animated series, so to get it here in Lego form is just a huge treat! :)
But two steps forward, one step back; I woulda loved to have gotten a spider-sense element or something to attach to the hair to go along with the head print. Or hell, they could have given us more of a shocked expression too, but perhaps I’m asking too much 🤷🏻♂️
As for the parts, the magnetic camera is rather clever!
The element itself is perhaps a little too overdesigned though. It gives off more of an “action figure accessory” rather than a “Lego Camera”. But again I like the concept! The two element strap & camera is a sneaky way for us fans to get a preferred iconic look without sacrificing the retail space of print on the torso!
The hair is the only piece that I’m not completely sold on. It’s a bit too tall for me. Almost like it needed to be squashed down just a smidge. The hair styling overall is pretty spot on, but just looks a little on the larger side. Still a cleanly produced element though!
He also comes with a wrist watch that’s so extremely small that I didn’t even remove it from the hand for fear of losing it! 😅
That being said though, it’s got maybe the perfect amount of detail. One little dab of silver ink, and some slight indentations for the size adjustment staps'n'holes. It's impressive at such a small scale CC could managed to achieve little details like that!
But man oh man, at the end of the day though, if some big hair and some missing leg print is all the negative I can take away from these two, I’d say I’m still pretty satisfied!
At $85 for Spidey and $95 for Peter, I’d say these were a solid pick up! Like that’s a borderline steal given the quality of work here! Shame the designers opted to make some weird decisions with those legs. But that's nothing a bit of photoshop magic cant fix in post!
I do hope Crosscheck continues this series with more characters like Hobgoblin and Scorpion and Doc Ock, and Lizard, and Black Cat and... well you get the idea!
But only time will tell! 🤞🏻
