Hades DC Brick Superman Torsos! (Patreon)
Content
I’ve got over a decade of custom minifig collecting under my belt, and it’s only now in the year of our lord 2023 that custom Superman figs are coming at us in full swing! Not only were we lucky enough to get a beautiful DCEU Superman from LifeBrick, but today well… Hades made all the rest of them!
From the very first super suit, to the Flashpoint of 2011! This is a huge range of Clark Kent torso designs, and man were these worth the price of admission! But they were hella expensive dude… $235 for eighteen torsos and three heads! (ouch)
It’s funny though, because when you break the math down each torso costs about $13 bucks! Close to the price of a Citizen Brick torso or something similar. So when thinking of it that way, it’s a much easier pill to swallow.
Still, it was kind of frustrating how Hades chose to distribute them to resellers. On Tracy’s site, each clamshell sold between $75-$80 and you couldn’t just pick up the one or two torsos that you really wanted.
So due to the nature of that business model, I had to skip set #4 for budget reasons. However, here's a screengrab photo of what I didn’t pick up. I liked that Ultraman and CW torso, but the rest I could take or leave.
Hades did a really great job getting the reds and yellow nice and bright, especially on the darker torsos like the Flashpoint suit and STAS Bizarro! I do wish that the CW torsos had reflective print like silver for the black suit, or bronze for Bizarro. For for the most part, the quality is there - minus a bit of ink splatter on the Curt Swan torso… so sad :(
The designs are what sold me though! They all match quite well to Lego’s official Superman. I'm a little surprised Hades didn’t print a majority of the muscles in dark blue like the official fig, but that’s a minor gripe at best.
Out of all of them, I’m a big fan of the classic crests of the Neal Adams and Curt Swan torsos. The classic Action Comics torso is also quite nice and makes me feel a bit better about missing out on Christo's old fig from back in the day.
However there are a few designs in here that I feel like they could have been printed over different plastic. Standard lego blue is nice, but not all of these designs were colored in books like the rich lego blue we all know and love. Like the Fleischer torso for example! A nice medium blue (or even sand blue) would have matched that old animation style a bit better that what Hades stuck with.
One of my last notes on design is that none of these torsos are for “elseworlds” Supermen. It’s all Clark Kent variants in some form or fashion. It made me wish we could have gotten a Superwoman (Lois Lane as Superman) or a single alternative Supergirl design to boot!
That being said, these are still great! But if they would have included more, I would have liked to have gotten a 90s Dan Jurgens battle damaged torso, or a big wide Ed McGuinness red and black shaded emblem.
Still! I gotta say that these are great design adaptations all around :)
There are lots of figbarfs to come with these! They were just so much fun to play around with and I hope this sparks other customizers to make their own Super-figs going forward!
